Project Name: Automata
Asking For: $322,637 on Kickstarter
Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $55,329
Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 32
Description: In 2009, seminal video game webcomic Penny Arcade released 'Automata,' a one-shot strip set in an alternate 1920s universe where robots walk among us. Since then, 'Automata' has picked up a following among Penny Arcade readers, and the comic came close to scoring its own Hollywood adaptation. That plan didn't work out, but Penny Arcade creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik still want to realize a screen version of 'Automata.' In order to turn it into a five-episode web series, they have turned to Kickstarter, where they are hoping to raise funds from among their devoted fans.
The Automata web series will take on the same film noir feel as the original comic strip, while exploring issues of prejudice in the robotic 1920s.

Maker Studios is already partnered with some of the most prominent gamers on YouTube, and thanks to its most recent deal, it's now partnered with the most prominent gaming webcomic, too. Maker's gaming vertical, Polaris, has teamed up with Jerry Holkins' and Mike Krahulik's Penny Arcade. The deal will mostly focus on Penny Arcade's YouTube channel, which has amassed 55,000 subscribers and more than seven million views since its launch in 2009. This audience pales in comparison to the millions of reads who read the Penny Arcade webcomic, which has helped define its medium since its launch back in 1998. While the webcomic continues to feature new strips three times a week, the Penny Arcade YouTube channel has been dormant for the past couple months. By teaming with Polaris, Penny Arcade hopes to revitalize its YouTube operation. “When Penny Arcade decided to expand our video business, Polaris was our first call,...

Things have been pretty gloomy around these parts recently. Politicians are holding a magnifying glass up the industry to both rationally and irrationally try and catagorise the gaming industry destructive capabilities. But, even inside the community, we have been showcasing some questionable behaviour. The gap between large publishers and consumers is an ever growing mire and distrust from both sides are souring relationships. Whether it be microtransactions, Dlc, season passes or whatever new ‘injustice’ pops up next on my RSS feed, relationships are beginning to spoil.
In a medium that is full of pointing fingers, whether it be from outside, inside or within, we sometimes forget to praise our very good work. Many of the major news outlets failed to praise what was possibly the best news in the community last year.
Last year, the Child’s Play Charity raised a staggering $5,084,761.

Zeboyd Games‘ recent downloadable retro-styled Penny Arcade-themed RPG, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, has been available on both PC and the Xbox Live Indie Games service for almost a month. Now, Jerry Holkins, writer for the Penny Arcade webcomic, has confirmed plans for both free downloadable content for the current game as well as an upcoming sequel.
On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 will receive two free Dlc packs; the first of which, The Lair Of The Seamstress, Holkins expects to release sometime next month, possibly at the same time as the Pax Prime gaming expo the web comic’s creators run. As of today, Zeboyd has also started work on a currently nameless second Dlc pack as well as the above-mentioned full-fledged sequel.

Created by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins in 1998, Penny Arcade has become one of the most successful gaming-centric webcomics ever made. It still receives several updates each week, and the creators have also started a successful gaming expo and charity fund in the form of both Pax and Child’s Play, respectively. With that being said, it makes sense that their next step would see them taking the plunge into making an actual game.
And yet the topic of this review is not their first attempt at it. In 2008, two downloadable games were released as part of an episodic series called Penny Arcade Advenures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, focusing on the comic’s protagonists, Tycho and Gabe, as well as a nameless third character whose appearance is customized by the player at the game’s start. These initial two games were developed by Hothead Games, but for various reasons,...

Mass Effect 3 campaigners seeking a new ending to the game have been asked to stop raising money for the Penny Arcade charity Child's Play. The request was made after Child's Play had been inundated with calls from fans who misunderstood the cause, assuming that they were paying for a new ending when making a donation. "We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem," said Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins. "Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect." Holkins added that Child's Play staff have received (more)...

2011's a year of milestones for Bungie. The "Halo" series--the Seattle-based dev studio's most famous creation--celebrates its tenth anniversary with "Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary," a remastered edition of the title that introduced cyborg supersoldier Master Chief to the world. Not only did "Halo" delivered the armored space marine to ecstatic players everywhere, it also ensured that Microsoft would find success with the Xbox, the tech giant's first foray in to game consoles. Bungie's original "Halo" codework can be seen in Classic Mode, a feature that lets you see the game as it look
But, Bungie's not building that game. Last year's "Halo: Reach" marked their last work on that franchise, whose future is in Microsoft's hands. But, Bungie's done more than Halo during its existence. This year also clocks in as the 20th that Bungie's been in business and they've just released a documentary to celebrate their longevity.

From ComicsAlliance: The mega-popular webcomic 'Penny Arcade' is heading to the big screen as an animated feature -- kind of. Rather than featuring Gabe and Tycho, the alter egos of creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik whose gaming adventures usually dominate the strip, Paramount Pictures plans to base the movie on a one-off Penny Arcade comic from 2010 called 'The New Kid.'
The strip introduces us to a familiar situation: a young boy nervous to begin classes at a new school, and frustrated that his father's job keeps uprooting his life and forcing him to start over. The twist? Rather than moving to different states or even countries, this boy is faced with the prospect of being the new kid on a totally different planet.

If you're one of the legion of comic book/video game nerds that reads this site, it's likely that you've at least heard of the webcomic "Penny Arcade," which chronicles the adventures in geekdom by the intrepid Gabe and Tycho, who are pseudo avatars for the writers, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik. Their comics run the gamut from poignant to clever to sophisticated ... to puerile, obnoxious, and occasionally flat-out offensive. For every comic like this, a comic that caused a substantial uproar in some corners of the internet:
"The Sixth Slave"
... there's one like this, one that speaks honestly to a good portion of their readership, and anyone who's been bullied in general:
"Instruction"
Regardless, they've built their little comic into a minor media empire, with a full store of gear, annual expos, a web TV series, and even video games. Somewhere along the way, they hit the big time.

You'd have to be living under a rock to not notice that geek culture's in its ascendancy. Superhero movies have become the new summer blockbuster staple, genre paradigms are engulfing television and literature and, as an industry, video games have out-earned feature films for years now.
Yet, there's a special breed of nerd success that exceeds the box office triumph of "Thor" or the mere existence of "Batman: Arkham City." That victory comes when you somehow inherently know that geek talent reaches the mainstream without losing essential elements of their DNA. "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World," while not a commercial success, shone brightly as a smart, attuned work of pop culture. The pairing of Edgar Wright with Bryan Lee O'Malley's material created sparks and "SPvTW" will be a cult hit for years to come, adored for the respect it shows for its own integrity.

Paramount is moving ahead with a new non-DreamWorks animated feature, New Kid. The studio had box office success with Gore Verbinski's Rango starring Johnny Depp and hopes to recreate the success with this new project. The film is an adaptation of an online comic from Penny Arcade. The studio has hired Book of Eli writer Garry Whitta to pen the script. New Kid will be produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter under their studio-based Disruption Entertainment.
The concept of the film will be to mix the feeling of being "a new kid in school with an intergalactic story when the kid happens to be the lone earthling in a school chock full of aliens." Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik created Penny Arcade and it's turned into one of the few viable webcomic sites that features a blog, video games, podcasts and an online TV show.
