The Avett Brothers have announced their first new album in five years. The self-titled LP, produced by Rick Rubin, arrives on May 17th via Ramseur Records/American Recordings/Thirty Tigers. As a preview, the band has unveiled the lead single, “Love of A Girl.”
There’s a hopeful, free, careless energy to “Love of a Girl,” which capitalizes on the band’s ability to mesh their folks roots with rock elements and pop catchiness. The grounded lyrics focus on finding meaning in even the most everyday elements, like a store-bought bouquet of flowers, coffee cups, school buses, and the first introduction to heartbreak.
The forthcoming record was recorded primarily in Malibu’s Shangri-La Studios, with additional recording done in Nashville, Mar Vista, and the band’s hometown of Concord, North Carolina.

There’s a reason music legend Brian Eno has never been the subject of a music documentary: He thinks they’re rubbish.
“I always find them frustrating,” said Eno, zooming into the post-screening Q&a at the January 18 premiere of “Eno,” which is, in fact, a documentary about the musician. “Any documentary I’ve ever seen about anybody I know, I thought has missed out [on] most of the interesting things about them.”
Eno’s larger problem with biography, whether it’s a movie or book, is that even the good ones “trace a sort of single chronological path through and make everything follow from each other.”
Veteran documentary director and producer Gary Hustwit shared Eno’s concerns. So this was his pitch: The documentary would be a different film every time it screened. Rather than the filmmaker making the connections between different aspects of Eno’s life, art, and ideas, digital...

Jane Harris' stubbornness is a double-edged sword.
Her strong stand against a student's homophobic comments is one that many American television characters -- and real-life school administrators -- could learn from. But her attitude toward Terese is ridiculous.
On Neighbours during the week of 10-09-23, Jane's fight to keep the school open put her in a precarious position. Will she give in to blackmail?
Jane's behavior was more annoying than admirable for the first half of the week.
Understandably, she felt Terese betrayed her by putting a bid on the school property. But Jane acted as if Terese advocated for the school to be shut down rather than focusing on finding an appropriate solution.

As Terese pointed out, other developers were also bidding on the property, so it's not like her withdrawing her application would save the school. The issue seems...

Writers and actors aren’t the only people in Hollywood grappling with the impact generative artificial intelligence will have on the entertainment industry. Documentarians are also concerned about AI and what it means for the ethical standards and practices of nonfiction filmmaking.
Many have used AI to transcribe interviews in the past few years and in recent months generative-ai models including ChatGPT and Midjourney have helped docu assistant editors create spreadsheets and visual placeholders as well as extract and catalogue metadata. But recent advancements in AI, such as the ability to generate fake photographs and only needing three seconds of someone’s voice to create synthesized audio of that person saying anything, have filmmakers like Dawn Porter (“The ‘Lady Bird Diaries”) worried.
“We are supposed to be the truth, and it might be the truth as we see it, but we are also supposed to be transparent,” says Porter. “I...

As three separate investigations involving serving politicians also acting as newsreaders are underway, Melanie Dawes, chief executive of U.K. media regulator Ofcom, has clarified the body’s position on the matter.
In an article originally published in the Telegraph and subsequently on the Ofcom website on Tuesday, Dawes wrote: “The Broadcasting Code is clear that serving politicians cannot be a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news program, unless there is an exceptional editorial justification. And in those exceptional cases, their political allegiance must be made clear to the audience. News programs will usually involve newsreaders directly addressing the audience, and may include reporter packages or live reports, with a mix of video and reporter items.”
Dawes added that outside of news programs, such as current affairs formats which typically feature more in-depth discussion, analysis, interviews and long-form video reports, there’s no Ofcom rule that prevents a serving...

“Freedom of expression” will be front and center of Ofcom’s thinking when the UK regulator draws up the new code governing the streamers, according to chief Melanie Dawes.
The Ofcom boss used her appearance at yesterday’s Deloitte & Enders Media and Telecoms 2023 & Beyond Conference to allay fears that the new code, which is part of the landmark Media Bill currently making its way through parliament, will be overly stringent on the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.
One of the Media Bill’s catchier elements has been bringing the streamers in line with broadcasters in areas such as harmful content and impartiality, but Dawes stressed that the code for the streamers will be different to the one that has ruled over the linear broadcasters for decades.
“[The government] will give us a requirement to produce a code for Video on Demand and I think it will differ from the...

“Ambiguity” around social media guidelines was to blame for the BBC Gary Lineker scandal, according to Ofcom boss Melanie Dawes, who was challenged on the “creeping politicization” of UK TV news during a committee hearing this morning.
Dawes, whose regulator has oversight of many elements of the BBC, said it is right that the corporation “retains responsibility for their own social media guidelines,” as the BBC prepares to launch a review into these guidelines as trade-off for Lineker returning to his Match of the Day hosting duties.
Speaking to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (Dcmsc) this morning, Dawes said there was “ambiguity” in the current guidelines that was “designed to give a degree of flexibility but didn’t achieve what the BBC wanted,” leading to the furore. Her comments came after Deadline revealed the BBC had failed to heed a recommendation three years ago that it examine rules...

There’s a reason why Taylor Goldsmith felt a deep, restless urge to release a brand new live recording of his band Dawes’ 2022 album, Misadventures of Doomscroller. And it all had to do with identity.
“I just felt like so much of what our band is — so much of our identity — takes place onstage,” the Dawes frontman tells Rolling Stone. “For the people that have been with us the last 10 years or whatever, the ones coming to the shows, they’re probably hearing this record and thinking, ‘Oh yeah, this is what they do.

For this Phantom Limbs, we’ll be uncovering George A. Romero’s Goosebumps, a feature film adaptation of the popular line of children’s horror novels written by R.L. Stine. Based on that series’ first book, Welcome to Dead House, Romero’s film would have expanded upon Stine’s tale while tweaking its central threat, all while keeping the scares family friendly. While the film sadly went unproduced (and the book would go on to be adapted for the Goosebumps television series in the late 90s), Romero nevertheless penned a full screenplay for the project, which more than illustrates his approach for an “all ages” horror film.
In researching this article, your writer paid a visit to the George A. Romero Archival Collection at the University of Pittsburgh Library System, which houses numerous works from the late horror legend, including produced and unproduced screenplays, treatments, artwork, correspondence, props, posters and more!

Rest in peace, Michael Massee.
Although he had a long and fruitful career in both movies and television, the beginning was enough to send a lesser man running for the exit.
Massee's second credited role was as Funboy in the feature film The Crow opposite Brandon Lee.
It was into his hands the fateful, improperly loaded gun was put, out of which a live round was shot directly into Lee's stomach.
Lee died later that day in the hospital after an unsuccessful surgery.
If all had gone well, the shot would have turned Lee's character into The Crow, and perhaps another type of movie history would have been made. It just wasn't meant to be.
Massee did take some time off from acting after the incident, and he never did see the completed film. He later admitted in a 2005 interview that he still suffered from nightmares over the incident, as...

Dr. Morgan’s dominatrix of a love interest has gone legit, thank you very much; when guest star Hilarie Burton (One Tree Hill) returns in tonight’s episode (ABC, 10/9c), her character has ditched the Iona Payne moniker and become Molly Dawes, a professor of — wait for it — sexual identity.

"Weeds" returns tonight and I've seen most of the first season of that show but not much beyond that. I know that Nancy is one of those characters on TV that people love to hate since her chosen profession keeps driving her and her family further down the road of reprehensible behavior yet they like to maintain some sort of air of superiority. Or at least that was the last I'd heard of the whole mess, has it changed any? Those of you still watching, are you just watching because you find Mary-Louise Parker kind of dreamy? Are you in the habit of mistaking Justin Kirk for the guy who played Sheriff Don Lamb in "Veronica Mars" and thus watching "Weeds" out of misguided loyalty? (I'm not telling you how long it took me to realize they weren't the same guy. Nope.) In any case, please feel free to discuss.
