John Legend and The Roots turned heads on the streets of New York on Thursday night, September 23 when they marched through the city playing instruments on their way to their concert at Terminal 5. The two critically-acclaimed acts, who have joined forces for their new collaborative covers album "Wake Up!", caused a stir as they made their way west on Manhattan's 56th Street and walked through the main doors of the venue, causing fans to scream in excitement.
But their big entrance wasn't the only surprise of the night - Legend and The Roots were joined on stage by a string of stars, including rapper Common and R&B star Jennifer Hudson. Taking his place behind a grand piano, Legend introduced Common and soul singer Melanie Fiona to the spotlight to perform the disc's title track, while hip-hop veteran Cl Smooth took over the mic for his verse on "Our Generation...

The Roots and John Legend will revive a host of soulful songs on their upcoming collection of covers, Wake Up!, which is due in stores in September.
The track list — which was revealed by Rap-Up.com on Monday (July 12) — includes 11 songs, and Chicago Mc Common and Grammy-nominated songstress Melanie Fiona make appearances on the album. Wake Up! revisits songs such as "Little Ghetto Boy" by Donny Hathaway, "Wholy Holy" by Marvin Gaye and "Hard Times" by Baby Huey and the Babysitters.
Although the album is a collection of vintage tracks, Legend said the timeless lyricism has a contemporary appeal. "These songs sound so relevant now," Legend said in a statement. "On most of them, you wouldn't change a lyric. 'Wake Up Everybody' (the album's first single,...

Ernie Hines probably isn't the first name that comes to mind when you think of soul singers. But the Mississippi singer/guitarist's "Our Generation" was John Legend and the Roots' choice when it was their turn to cover a song for the Levi's Pioneer Sessions project.
Legend and the Roots, who were already working on an album of covers, Wake Up!, were quick to come onboard when Levi's called. Legend acknowledged the song was relatively obscure, but said he thought fans would recognize it from a famous hip-hop sample.
" 'Straighten It Out' [by] Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth was an important hip-hop record and it sampled 'Our Generation,' " Legend said. The R&B crooner went on to explain that as he and the...

?uestlove and John Legend John Legend and the Roots have teamed up with Levi’s Pioneer Sessions—in which America’s favorite jeans manufacturer commissions modern-day artists to cover classic songs—and recorded a killer rendition of “Our Generation” by Mississippi-born, Baton Rouge-raised Ernie Hines. “Our Generation” is one of those Stax 45s that would make any record-store dweeb drool and/or drain his bank account. Hines’s work is steeped in the gospel tradition of the south and the soul of the legendary Memphis-based record label. If there’s one band working in America right now with the muscle to tackle the signature no-frills funk of Stax records, with its biting horns, soulful vocals, and resonant organs, it’s the Roots. Adding John Legend’s croon on to top of it all doesn’t hurt, either. Stream the track after the jump.
