“I ought to be thy Adam,” says the Creature in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. “But I am rather a fallen angel.” It’s the basis for every mad scientist story: You try to create man and end up with a monster. Fuck around with playing God and see what happens. Poor Things wants to add a few what-ifs into the Prometheus-myth mix. What if the Creature wasn’t a hideous Adam, but a gorgeous Eve that enticed every man who came into contact with her? And, like Shelley’s existentially miserable reanimation,...

We’re not even ten minutes into the interview, and my eyes start welling up with tears. “The fact that you’re here right now, you’re blinking, and I’m breathing, there’s blood pulsing through our body, that is enough,” he tells me over video. As he sits in his hotel room, escaping the sweltering heat of Las Vegas, and I hide away in a cold New York City office, it’s like space collapses. Suddenly, we’re sitting side-by-side as equals, though miles apart. “I don’t need to prove anything.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have reteamed and the result, “Poor Things,” is being heralded as a new classic for the ages.
In “Poor Things,” Stone plays a young woman named Bella Baxter who is brought back to life by the “brilliant and unorthodox scientist” Dr. Goodwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
The reviews for the movie have been effusive in their praise and social media is hailing the film for embracing both Lanthimos’ brand of wackiness while also being extremely graphic.
Film critic Alex Billington said, “Poor Things is… the raunchiest film of the decade?! Everyone...

If the life of royalty hadn’t worked out, Kate Middleton could have easily had a second career in the theatre. A resurfaced childhood video of the 41-year-old Princess of Wales has gone viral yet again, after previously cropping up online in past years.
In the clip, which was reportedly taken when the mother of three was just 11 years old, the wife of Prince William is seen playing Eliza Doolittle in the musical My Fair Lady. The role, which was played by Julie Andrews on Broadway and by Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 musical film adaptation, follows the Cockney flower woman as she transforms into a member of refined society.
Wrapped in a shawl and holding a flower basket, Middleton even had an impressive Cockney accent as she sang the famous tune “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly”.

There was a moment I knew much was going wrong with Aaron Sorkin's musical bookwriting debut with the "Camelot" Broadway revival. It arrives when Phillipa Soo groans at the title number "Camelot" with an attitude that reads "Is this guy seriously doing a musical number?"
Yet, the same scene builds to a realization that Sorkin's penmanship can go right. It's when the young King Arthur (Andrew Burnap) persuades his arranged betrothed, Guenevere (Soo), of a risky experiment: "Together we may discover if power might be harnessed as a force of good." The promise of this experiment persuades the skeptical princess that her marital purpose might yield a net gain — as long as she doesn't over-test her obligations.
Those aware of "Camelot" and its often-adapted legend source material (credited to T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" in this case) know that the burgeoning passions between Guenevere and the...

"My Fair Lady" is a 1964 movie musical based on the 1956 Lerner and Loewe stage musical of the same name, which is in turned based on the 1913 stage play "Pygmalion" which, in its own turn, is based on Greek mythology. Sure, that trail ends with Hollywood, but Broadway is up to exact same shenanigans when it comes to remakes and reboots. Although the story of "My Fair Lady" is significantly altered from the original mythos, the core relationship between creator and creation is unchanged. Well, it's now about British high society and not about a sculptor and a sculpture anymore. Close enough, right?
Anyway, the 1964 film stars the one and only Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, the titular fair lady. Co-starring as professor Henry Higgins, the titular claimant of possessing a "fair lady," is Rex Harrison, who also played the role opposite Julie Andrews in the original Broadway production. The View‘s original co-hosts Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos and Joy Behar were among those paying tribute today to the late TV groundbreaker and icon Barbara Walters, as the show’s current panel was joined, either live or by remote, by a succession of former panelists.
“She is the reason we’re all sitting here today,” said current moderator Whoopi Goldberg at the top of today’s episode, adding that the pioneering Walters was respected by the TV industry in part because “she did not allow them to not respect her.”
“We knew her better than anyone I think,” said Behar, the sole original co-host who remains with the ABC show. “She was the original role model for everybody else”
Along with the expected accolades for Walters as a TV icon, the View creator was affectionately remembered as an unrivaled behind-the-scenes teller of tales, lover of dirty jokes and holiday-time “re-gifter.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – not least because it’s the time of year where people the world over get to enjoy Martine McCutcheon’s star turn in the ultimate Christmas movie Love Actually. Her portrayal of Natalie – the sweary, lovable assistant to Prime Minister David (aka Hugh Grant) – is one of the film’s highlights, and she’s rightly beloved for the role. She’s recently been reminiscing about Love Actually at the ‘20 Years Later’ reunion on ABC:
Martine McCutcheon, who played Natalie in the #LoveActually film, said in a message to @ABC that the film resonates today because "it's so human" and portrays "different, complicated types of love."

Every year, Strictly Come Dancing returns to glitz up our Saturday nights... and every year, fans are treated to another movie special.
First introduced in 2014, Strictly’s Movie Week sees the contestants perform a selection of dances inspired by the biggest Hollywood blockbusters, with comedy, action and kids films all being given the Strictly treatment over the years.
But what makes for a really good Movie Week performance? Looking the part is obviously key, and you can always expect this theme to bring out some of the best hair, make-up and costumes that Strictly has to offer.
Ultimately, however, it’s the dancing being marked, with the best performances managing to show off the celebrity’s skill – something they often haven’t quite found yet, with Movie Week usually coming around the third week in the competition – while also featuring choreography that captures the essence of the films they’re paying tribute to.

Hollywood has never had a healthy relationship with sex. Torn between leering salaciousness and code-mandated puritanism, the end results on-screen have often been messy, thematically conflicted, and deeply unsexy. Much has been made about the state of on-screen sensuality in 2022 and the blockbuster age, where ultra-muscular and fit bodies are fetishized yet entirely divorced from sex itself. As one viral article published last year in Blood Knife out it, "everyone is beautiful and no one is horny."
Things are improving in small ways, mostly on streaming thanks to shows like "Bridgerton" that undeniably f***, but everything remains pretty limited in terms of what goes on between the sheets. Kink of any kind is still a no-go topic for screens big and small. While the highly profitable adaptation of the much-derided "Fifty Shades" trilogy was sold as a journey into the dark pleasure of Bdsm, the end results were decidedly vanilla and not all that erotic.

We may never know the full truth behind Delia Owens’ checkered past as a conservationist — which almost certainly seem to include a militant, white savior-minded approach to policing Zambian wildlife preserves, and may also extend to being a “co-conspirator and accessory” to murder — but the secret to the “Where the Crawdads Sing” author’s success is now as obvious as her plotting, even to those of us who had never heard of the runaway bestseller until Taylor Swift invented it a few short weeks ago. Olivia Newman’s (“First Match”) slick and glossy beach read of a movie adaptation brings it all right to the surface. Which is just as well, because .

Actor and singer who played Truly Scrumptious in the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Although she never starred in any original productions of his shows on Broadway, Richard Rodgers described Sally Ann Howes, who has died aged 91, as “the greatest singer who ever sang on the American musical stage”. Best known for playing Truly Scrumptious opposite Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Howes was a classic instance of the star who never really was, despite her talent and impeccable pedigree.
She had dual nationality in Britain and the US, like Julie Andrews, in whose track she followed, first as a child star in British films before and after the second world war, then as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady in 1958. The show marked her Broadway debut, and she played in it for a year, and for a higher salary than her predecessor.

Ever wonder how late-night gaming sessions impact adult sleep patterns? Renowned sleep doctor Dr. Michael Breus put together five things adults need to know about the effects of video games on sleep.
“Gaming late at night and/or close to bedtime is likely to be mentally and physically stimulating and counterproductive to sleep. Helena Bonham Carter and Pierce Brosnan are set to star in a romantic comedy called “Not Bloody Likely” that tracks the true story of a 1914 production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” the story that would eventually become the musical “My Fair Lady.”
“Last Chance Harvey” director Joel Hopkins will direct the film that is being presented to buyers at the American Film Market. Production hopes to begin on the film in the U.K. in spring 2021.
Brosnan will star as Shaw, who is determined to get actress Pat Campbell (Bonham Carter) to play the role of Eliza Doolittle in his now-classic play. But his real intention is to woo her and rekindle their past love. The whole story is seen through the eyes of a young producing assistant who is tasked with finding a “real” Flower Girl who might help Campbell become Eliza, only to spark his own romance.

This The Good Lord Bird review contains spoilers.
The Good Lord Bird Episode 2
During several moments of tonight’s The Good Lord Bird, my mind was whisked back to thoughts of My Fair Lady—or at least George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. In those texts, two confirmed old bachelors in Edwardian England think it is their privilege, if not duty, to remake a poor flower girl into their perfect image. It’s a tale of possessive manipulation and outright obliviousness. And it’s given a distinctly American flavor in the first few hours of Ethan Hawke’s Good Lord Bird.
Like those earlier plays, here is a story where privileged white men, even well-intentioned Old John Brown, think it their right to remake Onion into the type of lady they see fit, all too blind by even their rosy colored racism to ask “her” opinion, or realize that she’s actually a boy.

Ever since the Apple TV+ streaming platform officially launched in the fall of 2019, it has debuted several new scripted shows. Among them is “Servant,” created by BAFTA nominee Tony Basgallop and executive produced by Oscar nominee M. Night Shyamalan. Among the show’s four principal actors, there is one performer in particular who deserves Emmy recognition, and that would be Lauren Ambrose. (Spoilers Follow For Season One)
SEEWill Jennifer Aniston (‘The Morning Show’) pull off this Emmy feat? Only Edie Falco has ever done it before
Ambrose plays Dorothy Turner, a local television news reporter, recently bereaved mother, and wife to Sean (Toby Kebbell). They’ve hired Leanne (Nell Tiger Free) to be the nanny for their baby son, Jericho, who is actually a doll intended to transition the couple through their grief following the death of their real infant son. But Leanne’s arrival brings about strange and frightening occurrences.

The Great McGinty
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1940/ 1:33:1 / 82 min.
Starring Brian Donlevy, Akim Tamiroff
Cinematography by William C. Mellor
Written and Directed by Preston Sturges
If the story of a unscrupulous crook who rises to great political power hits a little too close to home these days, consider that in 1940’s The Great McGinty the mobster in question is a fundamentally decent gent who sacrifices his career to do the right thing. When the jig is up he high-tails it to the border, penniless but with a clean conscience. Current events require that Preston Sturges’ bittersweet political satire be filed under Fairy Tales.
The movie opens in a rowdy little dive in South America where the once and future lowlife Dan McGinty has made his new home, lording over the bar while dispensing equal amounts booze and wisdom. One poor fellow wanders in who could use a little of both.

“My Fair Lady” vs. “Mary Poppins.” Audrey Hepburn vs. Julie Andrews. It could have been the biggest rivalry in Academy history, but with two of the classiest stars and two beloved musicals involved, this “rivalry” has just become a memorable side note to the 37th annual Academy Awards. The ceremony, which took place April 5, 1965, also saw a few firsts for the awards show. But when it came right down to it, Andrews got her sweet revenge (in spoonful of sugar style)!
Although it’s become one of her most iconic roles, Hepburn was a controversial choice for the role of Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady.” Producer Jack Warner (reluctantly) kept much of the Broadway cast for the film version, but opted not to cast stage star Andrews, who originated the role of Eliza. He chose Hepburn based on her star power (hoping to recuperate the enormous cost of production), then against her wishes,...

We speak with the cast and showrunner of Servant, M. Night Shyamalan and Apple TV+'s new series, and unlock some of its secrets.
We all handle grief differently. For some it can be broken down into five easy steps, but for others it’s messier. In the case of the Turners, the couple at the center of Servant who were once happy young parents, the loss of a child is a downright nightmare with no escape past the denial stage. This is the entry point into M. Night Shyamalan’s new television series for Apple TV+’s Servant, a wicked seeming thriller where there is more than meets the eye. And that includes “the child” they’re still raising in their home.

Samantha Bee seriously upped the ante at her second Not The White House Correspondents Dinner taping, Friday night.
Two years after hosting her first mock dinner in response to President Donald Trump announcing he would not attend, Bee this time also pounced on the correspondents group, for deciding this year to forgo the traditional comic roasting of Potus. The White House Correspondents’ Association made that call after Michelle Wolf last year succeeded in her goal of burning down the place, for which the Whca issued an apology.
On an enormous screen, Bee displayed what she described as reporting on every single Trump scandal since he was sworn in, each being an example of the valuable work the journalists do. Including his administration’s decision to snatch babies at the border, and “letting Chinese spies wander around Mar-a-Lago.”
“How did they ever crack the Mar-a-Lago WiFi pass?” Bee marveled.

Exclusive: Laura Benanti has joined the cast of true-life biographical drama What Is Life Worth. The Michael Keaton/Stanley Tucci-starrer is directed by Sara Colangelo with production starting this month.
The Black List script from Max Borenstein is based on Kenneth Feinberg’s memoir. Feinberg, a powerful DC insider lawyer, was put in charge of the 9/11 Fund. In almost three years of pro bono work on the case, he fought off the cynicism, bureaucracy and politics associated with administering government funds to victims’ families — and in doing so, discovered what life is worth.
Benanti will play Karen Abate, the widow of a New York City firefighter who died in 9/11 and turns up at Feinberg’s office with her three kids to tell him her story.
The Tony Award winner is currently starring on Broadway as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and plays recurring character Quinn on TVLand’s Younger.
