It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.
Here are some of the highlights:

Nearly three years have gone by since Chris Stuckmann, a movie critic and author with a channel on YouTube that has over 2 million subscribers, signed a deal with Paper Street Pictures to write and direct the mystery horror film Shelby Oaks. Two years ago, the project became the most-funded horror film project in Kickstarter history, with its crowdfunding campaign pulling in over $1 million. Filming took place in the Cleveland, Ohio area back in 2022, and while we still don’t know when we’re going to have a chance to see Shelby Oaks, Deadline reports that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan has just board the project, which is making its way through post-production, as an executive producer.
Flanagan’s previous credits include Absentia, Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and...

Exclusive: Chris Stuckmann and Aaron B. Koontz of Paper Street Pictures have added genre specialists Mike Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures as executive producers on their record-breaking Kickstarter-backed horror film Shelby Oaks, which is in post-production.
The 2022 Kickstarter campaign for the movie raised $1.39M in under a month, more than doubling the previous record for the most-funded horror film on Kickstarter.
A combination of documentary, found footage and traditional film styles, Shelby Oaks centers on Mia’s (Camille Sullivan) frantic search for her sister, Riley (Sarah Durn), who ominously disappeared in the last tape of her investigative series Paranormal Paranoids. As Mia’s obsession grows, she begins to suspect that the imaginary demon from Riley’s childhood might have been real.
The cast also includes Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett and Keith David. There’s no word yet on a release plan.

The final month of the year has arrived, and with it an early Festivus bounty of news (very exciting!) about the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which are happening once again on February 25, back on the beach in Santa Monica. Last week brought tell of our incomparable new Spirit Awards host: SNL funnywoman and Emmy-nominated streaming series auteur Aidy Bryant. Now, the nondenominational secular-humanist Holiday Gnomes have brought us something potentially even more exciting… the nominees!
For the third consecutive year, the Spirit Awards will recognize outstanding achievement in uniqueness of vision, innovation and boldness in TV and streaming in addition to feature film. And for the second year, all acting categories are gender-neutral.
Noms were revealed in a livestream earlier today on Film Independent’s YouTube channel (like and subscribe!) by special guest presenters Joel Kim Booster and Natalie Morales:

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. On Friday, October 6th, the Fest will be screening his 2002 cult classic, The Mothman Prophecies, starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Debra Messing, and Will Patton. Released last fall, Lucky McKee’s “chamber thriller” Old Man had nothing to do with the Don’t Breathe films, despite starring Stephen Lang – who played the “Blind Man” in both Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2. But that didn’t stop the movie’s Russian distributor from marketing it as a prequel to those films! During an interview with Jb Hi-Fi, McKee laughed about the fact that his movie is part of the Don’t Breathe franchise, as far as Russia is concerned.
McKee said, “In Russia, they released it as Don’t Breathe: The Beginning. Kind of like the Italians used to do back in the day, with movies like Zombi 2.“
Sure enough, if you search the title Don’t Breathe: The Beginning, you’ll find confirmation that Old Man is a Don’t Breathe prequel in Russia.

Earlier this week we broke the news that Shelby Oaks has become the most-funded horror film project on Kickstarter.
The feature, written and to be directed by YouTube film critic/filmmaker Chris Stuckmann, is based on a recent internet mystery about a group of missing paranormal investigators.
On Monday, we reported that the project had reached $650,000 from 6,700 backers on the crowdfunding platform after launching its online campaign only three weeks prior.
Four days after that article, however, the movie has now raced past $1M and added 4,500 backers. That’s good-going for an indie horror movie based on an original concept and without star names attached. The project is also drawing attention from studios, according to Stuckmann.
“It’s so crazy, I don’t know what to say,” the critic and filmmaker said in a video message to contributors. “We can already make the movie in the way we want to.

Ahead of Dementer's world premiere screening on October 10th at the Nashville Film Festival, we have a look at the official trailer and poster:
"The sophomore feature from writer/director Chad Crawford Kinkle, whose 2013 film Jug Face made waves across the indie genre scene, Dementer is daring, full-force arthouse horror that pulls absolutely no punches.
Katie, a young woman determined to do something positive with her life after fleeing from a backwoods cult, takes a job at a center for special needs adults. Desperately attempting to live a normal life, she is overwhelmed by signs that “the devils” are after Stephanie (newcomer Stephanie Kinkle), a woman with Down Syndrome that she now cares for.
Using writings from a strange notebook, Katie creates rituals to ward away the evil while taking care of Stephanie at the center and in her home. But nothing seems to work, and Stephanie is becoming sicker with each passing day.

Exclusive: 13 Reasons Why star Devin Druid has been set to lead cast in horror-western The Pale Door, which is executive-produced by Cold In July novelist and co-producer Joe R. Lansdale. Production is under way in Oklahoma on the feature, which is repped for world sales by Amp International.
Author Lansdale is also a creative and script consultant on the film from writer-director Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura). Pic follows a gang of cowboys and a mysterious woman who seek shelter in a seemingly uninhabited ghost town after a disastrous train robbery. Seeking help for their wounded leader they are surprised to stumble upon a welcoming brothel in the town’s square but soon discover that the town is home to a coven of witches and blood-thirsty wolves.
The ensemble cast includes Zachary Knighton (The Hitcher), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Bill Sage (We Are What We Are), Pat Healy (The Innkeepers), Stan Shaw (Rocky), Natasha Bassett, Noah Segan (Looper) and Tina Parker (Better Call Saul).
Script comes from Keith Lansdale, Cameron Burns and Koontz. Producers are Ashleigh Snead, Matthew Thomas, and Roman Dent, and Koontz and Burns for Paper Street Pictures. James Norrie and Inderpal Singh are also producing for Amp. David Guglielmo is casting director.
Director Koontz said, “I love the idea of mixing these two disparate worlds of horror and western, and to do so with the help of Joe and Keith Lansdale, feels like the perfect devil’s playground. It’s 3:10 To Yuma meets The Descent, but doused, and then set on fire with psychological horror. Once this gets going, it’s relentless.”
Amp’s Norrie commented, “Buyers are looking for high concept genre projects that stand out from the crowd. This is a film about cowboys battling witches. With rabid wolves and unholy ravens. The response from the market has been electric and we couldn’t be more excited to be involved.”
Druid was a breakout star in Netflix’s controversial hit 13 Reasons Why and will be returning as a key figure for season three as well as starring with Tom Hanks in upcoming historical-drama Greyhound. Knighton is a co-lead on Magnum P.I. for CBS.
Walters is a regular on the Hulu show Pen15 and Noah Segan will be seen in Rian Johnson’s upcoming crime caper Knives Out. Bill Sage can next be seen in sci-fi thriller The Wave.
