A record 92 animated short films have qualified for the 92nd Academy Awards, a list that will be winnowed to 10 contenders when shortlist is announced Dec. 16. Alongside entries such as Sony’s “Hair Love” and Magic Light Pictures’ “Zog,” challengers include lauded films from animators such as Tomek Popakul’s “Acid Rain,” Siqi Song’s “Sister” and Theodore Ushev’s “The Physics of Sorrow.” Ranging from studio darlings to festival gems, the diversity of projects in the category makes for a somewhat unpredictable race, yet each year a handful of shorts float to the top, generating awards season buzz.

Serving as Head of Story at Pixar Animation Studios, Kristen Lester recently got to write and direct her first animated short with Purl, a timely and topical short inspired by Lester’s challenging journey in animation.
The short centers on a hardworking and open-hearted ball of yarn who takes a job at a fast-paced, male-centric company, aptly named B.R.O. Capital. The first ball of yarn to work at the company, Purl finds herself excluded and discriminated against by her coworkers. Considering changing her personality and appearance to fit in with the guys, Purl ultimately realizes that doing so would be doing a disservice to herself, and all other employees who stand out as different from the established norm.
While animation is an area of entertainment with a historic reputation of excluding or marginalizing women in the workplace, Lester has been excited to see the tide begin to change.

“Thrive” is the theme for the Siggraph 2019 tech conference (July 28-August 1), which gears up Monday at the La Convention Center with a keynote by Marvel executive producer Victoria Alonso about the importance of diversity in digital storytelling. Meanwhile, several CG awards contenders will be deconstructed, including the record-breaking “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story 4,” “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” Season 8 of “Game of Thrones,” “Alita: Battle Angel,” and Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.”
Disney shorts will additionally be represented by Pixar’s “Purl,” Kristen Lester’s Best in Show animation winner about female empowerment in a male-dominated workplace, and Disney’s second Vr venture, “a kite’s tale,” about the clash between a puppy and a dragon, from effects animator Bruce Wright (“Frozen 2”).
“The concept of ‘thrive’ is multifaceted,” said conference chair Mikki Rose, Fur technical director at Blue Sky Studios (“Spies in Disguise”). “For some in our community,...

Hollywood’s biggest night — and the glitzy, glam-filled capper of the annual awards season — unfolded Sunday evening at Hollywood & Highland’s Dolby Theatre, where the entertainment industry’s biggest and brightest turned out en masse to celebrate, and potentially walk away with a statuette of their very own.
By the time this particular Oscar Sunday kicked off, there were plenty of big questions still up in the air, from who would win a fraught Best Picture race to the question of whether or not Marvel or Netflix would make history with some major wins. Peter Farrelly’s embattled “Green Book” walked away with a Best Picture win, Spike Lee didn’t break his Best Director losing streak (though a win for Best Adapted Screenplay seemed to ease the pain), and the acting awards offered at least one mild surprise, but the most exciting stories were often found elsewhere.

Yes!! Pixar made a short film about robots?! Awesome. The latest SparkShorts film from Pixar Animation Studios is titled Smash and Grab, and it's available online for viewing for free now. Just last week they launched the first short online - Purl directed by Kristen Lester - and they've followed it up with this one being released next. From director Brian Larsen, Smash and Grab is a tale of two robots. After years of toiling away inside the engine room of a towering locomotive, two antiquated robots will risk everything for freedom and for each other. This definitely feels like it fits right into the Wall-e universe, and the sound design is especially amazing and a key part of the characters. I am totally loving these SparkShorts, they're superbly entertaining and unique and clever. I hope they keep this program going for a while. Watch below. Description from Pixar's YouTube: "Smash and Grab,...

Last month is was announced that Pixar was launching a new animated short film program called SparkShorts. The first animated short from this program has been released online for you to enjoy. But first, here’s a little description of what SparkShorts is:
“The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows. These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.”
The first short to be released is called Purl, and it comes from director Kristen Lester and producer Gillian Libbert-Duncan. The story centers on “an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who gets a job in a fast-paced, high energy, bro-tastic start-up. Yarny hijinks ensue as she tries to fit in, but how far...

"Let's bring finance in and knit our strategies together." Pixar has debuted the first charming, provocative short film as part of their new SparkShorts program online today - for free for everyone to watch. And it's worth a watch, for sure! The short is titled Purl, and it's about a pink ball of yarn that gets hired at a startup. From Pixar: "An earnest ball of yarn named Purl gets a job at a fast-paced, high energy, male centric start-up. Things start to unravel as she tries to fit in with this close knit group. Purl must ask herself how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for and in the end is it worth it?" Directed by Kristen Lester, and featuring the voice of Bret 'Brook' Parker as Purl. It's a fantastic little short about workplace discrimination and giving people a chance beyond their appearances.

Pixar has launched a very cool new program for artists to get their short films made and out there for the public to view. The program will officially debut at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood this Friday, January 18, 2019, and run through the 24th. Here’s what the President of Pixar Animation Studios, Jim Morris, had to say about the program:
“The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows. These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.”
That’s so awesome! Each of the three shorts that are debuting will follow a showing of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, with three showings daily. The shorts will then make their online debut on the Disney/Pixar Youtube channel.
