What can Disney say to cinema owners except “you’re welcome“? After all, the studio is revisiting the island of Montunui, where “Moana” takes place, a lot sooner than movie theaters were expecting.
Earlier this year, the studio announced a surprise sequel to the 2016 animated feature for release on Nov. 27. The follow-up was initially commissioned as a television series for Disney+ but it was retooled into a feature film after executives were reportedly impressed by the footage.
Disney shared the first look at the scenes that wowed those Magic Kingdom creatives during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday. In the music-heavy clip, Moana returns to her home island of Montunui and is greeted with a hero’s welcome. The clip offered a taste of one new song, which appears to be about the wayfinding natives eager to be “back to who we’re meant to be.” Although the...

Jon Musker and Ron Clements' 2016 animated Disney film "Moana" was a massive hit, making over $687 million worldwide. The titular character is a princess from the Polynesian island of Motunui. Her people are content on their island and hate venturing out into open waters, a mandate that Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) decides to break when a blight strikes her village. The bulk of "Moana" follows the princess after she sets sail and befriends Maui (Dwayne Johnson), an impish demigod with a connection to the blight. "Moana" was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
A "Moana" TV series was in the works at Disney, although those plans were surprisingly altered in February 2024 when CEO Bob Iger announced that the series was being reworked into a movie sequel instead. The release date was given as November, only nine months from the announcement. In terms of Disney marketing, that was pretty short notice.

Two months after Disney CEO Bob Iger’s surprise announcement that Moana 2 was in the works at the studio and scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 27, the animated sequel took center stage at CinemaCon.
Disney debuted an exclusive sneak peek of footage of the David Derrick Jr.-directed film in front of theater owners with the help of its superstar voice talent, Dwayne Johnson. He arrived to the stage after a mini-performance from Polynesian dancers. Johnson is back for the new installment alongside actors from the original, including Auli’i Cravalho and others.
“As we say on the island, aloha,” Johnson said, dressed for the occasion in trousers and a white tank top. “Playing the character of Maui is one of the most life-changing life experiences for me and life changing roles.”
He added that the character is more meaningful to him than just a gig. “It’s my culture, you...

What have we here? It's a sparkly, shiny... new look at Disney's upcoming surprise sequel Moana 2! Yes, during the House of Mouse's 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders yesterday, the company shared some more info on the hotly anticipated follow-up to their smash-hit 2016 animated movie musical. Make way, make way — new image inbound. Check it out above.
Yes, this may be just a single frame from Disney's seafaring sequel, but there's already plenty to catch the eye here. Moana looks older and more confident here, her oar (rocking Maui's fish hook and heart engraving) leading the way. And the animation looks luscious — consider the hair texture and lighting, the oak and the seas. And also – holy mother of Tamatoa, is that a sea monster behind her? It certainly looks like it, tentacles, beady blue eyes and all.
And sea monster sightings certainly track with the synopsis The Walt Disney Company...

Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

Exclusive: Auli’i Cravalho is coming back to reprise the voice of Moana in Moana 2.
We last heard that she was in talks, however it’s clear that she was bound to reteam with Dwayne Johnson, who clearly is coming back as demigod Maui.
In a CNBC interview ahead of Disney’s last earnings call, CEO Bob Iger sprung the news that Moana 2 was opening of November 27, during the Thanksgiving stretch. Disney essentially was over the moon with a Moana Disney+ series that it turned into a big-screen movie.
The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr., with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
Cravalho told fans last May on social that she wasn’t planning to reprise the role of Moana in the live-action version of the movie.

“Moana” voice actor Auli’i Cravalho attended her first SAG Awards this year and spoke to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv about the hit Disney animated movie becoming a full blown franchise. The studio surprised fans earlier this month by announcing the “Moana” television series it had been developing was now a movie sequel set for a theatrical release this November.

During its first quarter earnings call earlier this month, Disney announced that the next animated film it will bring to theaters on Thanksgiving will be the sequel to its 2016 hit “Moana,” signaling a renewed push on sequels after years of original animated titles.
But “Moana 2” was originally announced in 2020, under short-lived CEO Bob Chapek, as a streaming series exclusive to Disney+. This change underscores a shifting strategy by Disney and other studios to move films previously planned for streaming to the big screen — in part to calm jittery investors nervous about the thin pipeline of tentpole movies after the Hollywood strikes.
The “Moana 2” re-direct follows Paramount’s “Mean Girls” and “Smile,” and Warner Bros./New Line’s “Evil Dead Rise,” all theatrical releases that were originally intended to be streaming-only.

Disney delivered a bit of a shocker recently when CEO Bob Iger personally revealed during an earnings report that "Moana 2" is headed to theaters. What's more, the surprise sequel is arriving later this year and has even gotten a very brief teaser trailer. This was, to say the least, unexpected as we usually hear about these things years in advance. So, why the surprise reveal? The Mouse House decided that a planned "Moana" TV series for Disney+ would actually be better suited as a theatrically released movie. So, here we are. There is much to be said, but it's a move that ultimately makes sense (at least in the short term) and one that indirectly says much about the state of the streaming business.
"We were impressed by what we saw, and knew it deserved a theatrical release," said Iger during the company's earnings call, explaining the decision to turn...

Seemingly out of nowhere, Disney not only announces Moana 2, but reveals that the film is arriving this November. More here.
How’s this for a surprise announcement. If you go by the rule of thumb that a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie takes three to four years to bring to fruition at the very least, then to learn of major new release with roughly ten months’ notice is quite something. Especially in the modern era of leaks and internet gossip.
Yet at its shareholder meeting overnight, Disney sprung the news that not only is a Moana 2 animated movie coming, but we’ll be seeing it this very year.
It comes off the back of two commercial disappointments for Walt Disney Animation Studios on the bounce: 2022’s underappreciated Strange World and last winter’s 100th birthday celebration movie Wish.
Moana 2 must be very welcome tonic for those who count the money around the place.

Make way! Make way! Yes, after sailing into audiences' hearts back in 2016, Moana will return. And sooner than you think. Even with the planned live-action version still in the works, Disney has opted to turn what had been developed as a series set in the world of the film into an animated sequel — and it'll be out later this year.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls on Disney to bring '90s nostalgia back — specifically nostalgia for quickly-made sequels to their popular movies. After announcing plans to have as many "Frozen" movies as there are seasons in the year, the 100-year-old studio that had a pretty rough 2023 decided the solution to all its problems lies in announcing "Moana 2," which not only got a surprise announcement, but a surprise teaser trailer and a surprise 2024 release date. Moana is returning to the big screen. Disney on February 7 announced the surprise release of “Moana 2,” a sequel to the 2016 Disney animated classic.
The film will open wide in theaters November 27, 2024. It is an animated feature and is separate from the live-action “Moana” film starring original animated star Dwayne Johnson that remains in the works for a summer 2025 release. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news on CNBC ahead of the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.
“Moana 2” was previously developed as a Disney+ series, but it will now be made into a feature film with a theatrical release. It’s unclear which (if any) cast from the original animated hit is involved.
Check out the first look and a teaser trailer below:
Per an official Disney release, “Moana 2” is “another animated musical that takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.

Moana and Maui are hitting the ocean once again. In a surprise move, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company will release an animated sequel to the 2016 film that will hit theaters Nov. 27. The announcement came during an earnings call in which Iger emphasized that the ship was being righted at Disney’s film and TV divisions several months after he acknowledged the company had done too much too fast in order to feed Disney+, leading to some cases of lower quality projects hitting the marketplace.
“I feel great about where we are with the studio,” Iger said when updating investors on Wednesday.
Dave Derrick Jr., who worked on the original film as a story board artist, will direct the new sequel, which is separate from a live-action remake of Moana starring Dwayne Johnson. Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina are writing the music.

The line where the sky meets the sea is calling Moana once again. Disney announced a sequel to “Moana,” which will be released theatrically on Nov. 27.
The company’s CEO Bob Iger revealed the news on CNBC ahead of Disney’s first quarter of fiscal 2024 earnings report. The second “Moana” was originally developed as a TV series but became a feature film because Iger was impressed with the footage.
“’Moana’ remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Iger said in a statement. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theaters this November.”
According to Disney, “Moana 2” will take audiences on an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Disney Boss Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2 is coming out as a feature — this November. Iger exclaimed the news in a CNBC interview before the studio’s Q1 earnings on how the studio was turning a Moana TV series into a feature sequel. This despite the fact that a live-action version with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui from the original 2016 film is also planned for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025.
Note, Disney books the Thanksgiving five-day Wednesday-Sunday stretch with an animated movie annually. It always had a November 27 release date set for a toon feature.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

Moana is the story of a young Polynesian heir ineffably drawn to the one thing that her community opposes: venturing out into the ocean, like the little mermaid was so drawn to land, like a monster to Boo, and like an ambitious rat was to the culinary arts.
Moana Head of Animation Hyrum Osmand (Zootopia, Frozen, Wreck It Ralph, Tangled) and Story Artist David Derrick Jr. (How To Train Your Dragon, Flushed Away, Bee Movie) talked with the press in a roundtable before speaking to the visual arts students at the University of Denver. Tucked away in a corner of the university, David tapped into what made Moana so personal to him, allowing him to segue easily into the film’s themes of Polynesian ancestry and culture while Hyrum explored the unique challenges this particular film offered Disney’s elite animators.
