Robin Thede’s Emmy-nominated sketch series “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is back for Season 2 — packed with many new characters for its core actors to play, while donning dozens of wigs (sometimes more than one in the same sketch) and acting opposite new and returning guest stars. But the road to get there wasn’t easy.
When Thede tells Variety “we’re not playing this year,” she isn’t just referring to the “elevated” content that is “pushing those boundaries even further” and really centering “Black lady joy.” She is also talking about producing such content amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The second season was a rollercoaster of a production for Thede and the “Black Lady Sketch Show” team. The show was five days away from kicking off work on the new season when the pandemic shut down the world in March 2020. HBO initially advised that production would be shut down for two months,...

It had been over a month since Baby Rose and I were initially supposed to chat. Due to unforeseen circumstances and busy schedules, we kept pushing our interview, but we finally got to talk over the phone on Aug. 26. Settled in at my kitchen table with my second cup of coffee - you know how those midday lulls hit - I hopped on the line for my scheduled meeting with the 26-year-old singer.
Rose, born Jasmine Rose Wilson, champions the notion that most things happen exactly when they should. The month-long process of setting up our interview seems to validate that idea. When we speak, it's only three days after the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wi, and the Black community is experiencing yet another wave of heightened pain and exhaustion. In our unity as two Black women, matters surrounding the country's social consciousness are bound to seep their way into our conversation,...

Skip Marley and H.E.R. joined forces on The Tonight Show to perform their sultry track “Slow Down” with the help of house band the Roots.
The pair released “Slow Down” in January along with a music video directed by Lacey Duke, although Marley and H.E.R. first premiered the song during a show at the Hollywood Bowl with Lauryn Hill in October. “When I made the song, I was looking and wondering who could be a feature and then I thought of H.E.R. because I love her vibe and her energy really.

Rising R&b artist Summer Walker has released a new video, “Come Thru,” featuring Usher. The dreamy, neon-soaked clip, shot by Lacey Duke, was filmed at Atlanta’s 285 Flea Market and features motorcycles, fog machines and plenty of other nighttime Lynchian imagery, with some Usher choreography thrown in for good measure.
“Come Thru” was produced by London on da Track and samples Usher’s 1997 single “You Make Me Wanna,” so the collaboration here feels especially appropriate. Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna” co-writer Jermaine Dupri appears alongside him in the music video.

During the Bet Awards on June 24, Netflix released an incredibly powerful advertisement spotlighting 47 black actors and creators as part of the streaming service's Strong Black Lead initiative. Titled "A Great Day in Hollywood," the spot was directed by Lacey Duke and inspired by the legendary "A Great Day in Harlem" photo, which captured notable jazz musicians in front of a brownstone apartment back in 1958. The Netflix ad is narrated by 16-year-old Stranger Things actor Caleb McLaughlin and features other familiar faces, including Ava DuVernay, Laverne Cox, Lena Waithe, Mike Colter, and Spike Lee, to name a few.
"This is a new day, built from the ground broken by legends - a day for our generation to see untold experiences of our blackness," McLaughlin begins, as the camera pans out to reveal the final frame of all 47 stars standing in front of an apartment building. "We're not a genre because there's...

Netflix unveiled a brand image spot during Sunday’s Bet Awards telecast that highlights black artists who work for the streaming giant.
The spot dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood” was inspired by the famed 1958 photograph “A Great Day in Harlem” featuring 57 jazz legends — including Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Count Basie — on the stairs of New York brownstone snapped by photographer Art Kane.
The Netflix spot from director Lacey Duke features 47 black writers, showrunners, actors, and producers. The plan for the spot and the image campaign stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative designed to foster an “ongoing, intentional focus to talk authentically with the black audience.” A photo similar to “Great Day in Harlem” was taken earlier this month by photographer Kwaku Alston to commemorate the gathering.

During the Bet Awards tonight, Netflix debuted a new brand spot featuring 47 black Netflix creators and talent representing the streaming company’s Strong Black Lead initiative.
The ad was conceived and created months ago and had already been scheduled to air during the Bet Awards when on Friday Netflix’s long-time communications chief Jonathan Friedland was ousted for using the N-word on two separate occasions.
In light of the controversy, I hear Netflix brass considered not proceeding with the spot this weekend but ultimately opted against it.
The spot, inspired by the legendary 1958 photo A Great Day in Harlem, which featured prominent jazz musicians of the time, was directed Lacey Duke, with Kwaku Alston taking a photo.
“It was a pretty magical couple of hours,” Duke said. “All these amazingly talented, beautiful individuals in one space being supportive and just looking stunning together, all here to pull off this one take wonder!

During the Bet Awards, Netflix premiered a TV spot called “A Great Day in Hollywood” promoting its Black creator-driven projects such as “Luke Cage” and “Dear White People,” as well as stars and show creators that have worked on original shows for the streaming service.
While the spot was conceived and created months ago by Netflix’s Strong Black Lead Team, the premiere comes with some weird timing, as the company fired its chief communications officer Jonathan Friedland on Friday for “descriptive use of the N-word on at least two occasions,” according to an employee memo sent out by CEO Reed Hastings. An individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that the incident had occurred on multiple occasions and that several Netflix employees filed complaints.
The spot was inspired by a famous photo taken 60 years ago called “A Great Day in Harlem,” which assembled dozens of the Harlem jazz scene’s most famous musicians.

Janelle Monae’s new 44-minute “emotion picture” for “Dirty Computer” will premiere on MTV and Bet on April 26, the companies announced. Monae’s album will be released the following day. (View the trailer below.)
The film, which co-stars Tessa Thompson is described in a press release as “the story of a young woman named Jane 57821 (Janelle Monae), who is living in a totalitarian near-future society where citizens are referred to as ‘computers.’ … ‘Dirty Computer’ explores humanity and what truly happens to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness when mind and machines merge, and when the government chooses fear over freedom.” It was produced by Monae and directed by Andrew Donoho and Chuck Lightning, and features collaborations with video directors Alan Ferguson, Emma Westenberg and Lacey Duke.
The singer has already released four songs and three eye-popping videos from the album: the rapped “Django Jane” and the Prince-channeling “Make Me Feel” in February,...

The pivotal shot in Oscar-nominated Chilean film “A Fantastic Woman” finds transgender woman Marina (Daniela Vega) sitting nude with her legs slightly propped up and a mirror covering her genitals reflecting her face. It’s a beguiling image that illuminates the movie’s central theme of a woman in tune with her identity and a world at odds with it, and now, the visual has company. Janelle Monaé’s new music video for her single “Django Jane,” one of two tracks recently released from her upcoming album “Dirty Computer,” contains an identical image with the singer doing the same thing.
Both images may owe their existence to an earlier source, Armen Susan Ordjanian’s 1981 photograph, “Self Portrait.” Social media users first picked up on the similarities in the hours after “Django Jane” went online.
