- Son of Joseph Muranyi and the former Anna Hajdu, Hungarian immigrants. He played in an United States Air Force Band and discharged in 1949. He earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's Degree in education from Columbia University in New York City. Rather than teaching, he became a full-time professional clarinetist in New York City. He worked with Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Lionel Hampton, and others.
