In Scott Schirmer’s film Found, a boy wants to know why his older brother kills people. Marty (Gavin Brown) originally believed horror movies, something he and Steve (Ethan Philbeck) both loved, was the cause. Over time, however, the root of Steve’s evil proves to be more nebulous. There are other important factors when understanding why this young man became a serial killer and why his little brother kept his secret for so long.
Found was a dream come true for Schirmer, who sought out author Todd Rigney after falling in love with his 2004 novel. “There was just this feeling of dread that hung over the entire story,” Schirmer said. And with Rigney as his co-writer, the pair then wrote a rather faithful adaptation of the source material. Like the novel, the film begins with Marty discovering a severed head inside his brother’s bowling bag. Oddly, though, Marty...

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

Scott Schirmer (Found, Harvest Lake) and his Band Motion Pictures, LLC imprint are running a new crowdfunding campaign for an icky little backwoods horror flick called Plank Face. Unllike most campaigns, this one is nearly at its goal and the film is actually already made, so there's no worrying about whether or not you'll see your funds go into something tangible. You can already buy a ticket to the film's world premiere on August 27th with key cast and crew in Columbus, Oh, click here. Plank Face features a protagonist captured by a feral family of cannibals who want him for their tribe. “It deals with our primal nature,” states Schirmer. “The characters in Plank Face live like wild animals, but they’re also very free. Harvest Lake is written and directed by Scott Schirmer and stars Ellie Church, Tristan Risk, Jason Crowe, Dan Dye and Kevin Roach. Producers include Arthur Cullipher and Brian Williams.
Harvest Lake is about a group of four horny adults who rent a cabin in the woods. Yes, this has been the setup for literally thousands of horror films, but in the case of Harvest Lake, the usual formula is thrown out for something completely different. There are strange fungi growing in these woods that have the visual and tactile qualities of human sex organs. These fungi fascinate and seduce our campers one by one, and ejaculate spoors into their faces that lower their sexual inhibitions and ultimately take over their bodies for the purpose of sex.

Back in 2013 I reviewed Found, directed by Scott Schirmer, after catching it at the 2013 Shriekfest film festival. Found, a dark, smart psychological horror film set in the 1980's, was by far my favorite film at the festival that year, and is truly one of my favorite horror films from this century. One of the highlights of Found was a film within the film called Headless. Headless, as featured in Found, is an unbelievably gory slasher from 1978 that inspires the real life murders in the film. Shortly after Found became the indie hit it deserved to be, Arthur Cullipher, the special effects director and a producer on Found, announced that he was following up the film with a feature length version of Headless.
Headless, the feature film version starring Shane Beasley, Kelsey Carlisle, Ellie Church and Dave Parker, is kind of a strange vehicle to follow up Found with.

Getting stuck in an elevator is scary enough, but doing so with a bunch of senior citizens? You can be sure filmmaker Patrick Rea piles on the spooky - plus a little silly - in this teaser for his "It's Hell Getting Old" segment of the Hellevator Man anthology.

I have been aware of the existence of this movie for quite some time. I started doing this website, covering independent horror almost exclusively. And, while I love indie movies, most of the reason that was my focus, was because it’s a lot easier to get an indie filmmaker to send you their film for coverage, than it is to get product from the big studios. I have witnessed some remarkable indie horror over the years, but I have seen some pure garbage as well. The most prolific sin of the indie horror industry, is that the main focus is almost always the special effects. And don’t get me wrong, I love some practical effects, but if it’s not sandwiched in-between good photography, effective lighting, and professional performances from your actors, the impact is severely limited. I say this, because I want you to understand why I...

Before I even introduce the concept of Found, please understand that director Scott Schirmer has re-defined the meaning of a “shoe-string” budget. Working with literally no budget, Schirmer and his team were able to put together a feature-length horror film with an estimated $8,000, coming in under Paranormal Activity‘s already astounding $15,000 (estimated). Oren Peli was smart, used his budget to his advantage, and went with the “found footage” method that didn’t require big, expensive cameras, also keeping the story rather grounded in the effects department.
Tackling a straight narrative film like Found is a much more daunting task on such a tight budget, not being able to splurge on visual gore, A-List actors, top-notch CGI, and sprawling settings like a big-budget film. Scott Schirmer evokes the heart of independent filmmaking with his harrowing horror film, but will you be able to ignore the shortcomings of such a small budget?...

Found
Written and directed by Scott Schirmer
USA, 2013
In Found, Marty (Gavin Brown), a horror movie-loving, graphic novel-writing suburban kid, discovers the severed heads his brother (Ethan Philbeck) keeps bringing home. Nonplussed at first, Marty soon has his life spiral into the kind of horror film he so dearly loves.
Watching Found can be quite the confusing experience. On the one hand, there’s themes of identity and maturity, with Marty experiencing bullying, sexual awakening, and familial conflict. There’s also a small commentary about the nature of horror movies and how they can desensitize younger audiences (Marty keeps his brother’s severed heads a secret, much like he does his mother’s old love letters from an ex and his father’s rude magazines).
But those qualities are all but made moot by the film’s jarringly inconsistent tone. The acting is stilted and stiff, making for an oddly...

We are now about a week deep into Toronto After Dark 2013, and there are only two more nights left of the festival. As always, I’m starting to really miss my nice comfortable bed, and the thought of a homecooked meal is making me drool, but some of the festival’s most anticipated titles are still in store.
Last night, though, we got a double dose of serious crazy with the Toronto Premiere of Found, and the World Premiere of Evil Feed. The theater was packed for both screenings, and each movie brought it’s own brand of crazy to the audiences.
The night began with a short, Canadian made, film called Liebe (which translates to Love). The film tells the story of a couple who go on a picnic only to find that something is watching them and wants what they have. It ended up being one of the...

Marty is the ideal fifth grader. He gets good grades, listens to his teachers, and doesn’t start trouble in class. But darkness is beginning to fall over Marty’s life. I have been dying to see Found for over a year now and I can honestly say it was worth the wait. I do wish I could have seen it first on the big screen instead of screening it on my computer, but I just couldn't wait any longer. First of all I'd...

Who doesn’t have issues with their big brother? My brother steals my stuff, my brother’s always getting me in trouble, my brother’s a serial killer, blah blah blah. Scott Schirmer’s “Found” (based on the novel of the same name) takes you there in a new movie that dares to shed light on the evil things that big brothers do. Like, you know, kill people. Of course, Schirmer’s movie seems to be a lot more thoughtful exploration of that premise, and he’s released a teaser trailer for “Found”. Take a gander below, won’t you? I promise it’ll be worth your time. Found centers around Marty, a shy, bullied fifth-grader who takes refuge in horror films… until his life turns into one. I guess you could say we found some grisly images from Scott Schirmer’s “Found”, but then that would be lame and cheesy and I’d have to punch myself in the face. Anyways, you think you’ve got problems? At least your big brother isn’t a serial killer. That’s the dilemma facing little Marty, a fifth grader with an unhealthy horror movie fixation in Scott Schirmer’s new horror/slasher film “Found”. The film is currently in pre-production with principal photography set for sometime this Summer. Until then, check out some appropriately bloody behind-the-scenes images from the movie.
