When it comes to iconic villains, Thanos stands tall, both in comic books and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His quest for universal balance, as well as his absolute power and wisdom, made him a formidable foe. But a closer look at Thanos’ story from the comic books reveals another story, one that challenges the idea of his intelligence and shrewdness portrayed in the movies.
Thanos from Avengers: Endgame
In the comic books, Thanos is a very complex character. Created by writer-artist Jim Starlin, Thanos first appeared in The Invincible Iron Man #55 in 1973. Unlike his portrayal in the MCU, where his primary motivation is balancing the universe in, by erasing half of all life, Thanos is such a complicated and extremely nuanced backstory in the comics.

Eternals 2: ‘Eros’ Harry Styles & Others Will Go Up Against A Variant Of Thanos, Claims A Report (Picture Credit: Facebook & IMDb)
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals had an ensemble cast, but it failed to impress the fans like other MCU movies. The first part came out in 2021, and it has been almost three years. A social media report has shared a new update on Eternals 2. The first film featured Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kit Harrington, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Barry Keoghan and others. It also introduced Harry Styles as Eros, Thanos’s brother.
The MCU introduced the Eternals and explained, despite being such powerful beings, why they did not interfere when Thanos invaded Earth or the other bad things that happened over the centuries. The Celestials created them, and their primary enemies are the Deviants. The fictional race of humanoids was created by Jack Kirby in 1976. Keep scrolling for more.

The Marvel heroes have been defeated. Captain Marvel and her fellow heroines didn’t have the power. Thor lies on the ground, embarrassed. Ant-Man and the Wasp, unequal to the task. Through the wreckage strides the Mad Titan Thanos, ready to reclaim his position.
“I am inevitable,” he declares.
That scene from Avengers: Endgame feels more and more prophetic as the MCU’s popularity continues to slip. Decreasing returns have plagued the franchise since Endgame, with audiences showing less interest with characters both new and familiar. Even strong post-Endgame entries, such as the second season of Loki, seem to fade away quickly from the conversation these days.
And so when Thanos actor Josh Brolin told ComicBook.com in a new interview about the Mad Titan’s potential return, some fans sighed in resignation. “You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back,” said Brolin,...

This post contains spoilers for Blue Beetle.
Even ten years ago, few would have guessed that the Blue Beetle would be in a movie, let alone the star of one. Both the current Blue Beetle Jamie Reyes and his predecessor Ted Kord have been fan favorites since the 80s, when the latter became a member of Justice League International. But Blue Beetle is hardly the only DC Comics deep cut in the film.
Throughout the movie, the villainous Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) touts her company’s newest invention, a battle suit termed Omac, which stands for One Man Army Corps. Created by Jack Kirby during his time at DC Comics in the 1970s, Omac is one of the legendary artist’s strangest characters, someone who has been radically reimagined several times since his first appearance.
Omac made his debut in 1974’s Omac #1, written and penciled by Kirby, with letters and inks by Mike Royer.

In the pantheon of the best superheroes of all time, Shang-Chi probably doesn’t rank high on anybody’s list. A superhero best described as “basically Bruce Lee,” Shang-Chi’s street cred is recognized only to readers of his original Marvel Comics series, Master of Kung Fu, when it was published during a widespread kung fu fad that dominated the American zeitgeist.
Despite a modest hit movie in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with sitcom star Simu Liu, Shang-Chi doesn’t have nearly the same recognition as the MVPs of the Avengers, either. It’s why rumors that Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi may co-lead the onscreen Avengers in the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty have encouraged mockery online, with fans loudly wanting to return to the pre-Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But the best superheroes exist as answers to powerful questions. Batman asks what happens when grief is fueled by vengeance,...

The world will have to wait longer to see the return of Shang-Chi to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
Up Front & Credits
Joining the ranks this issue we have Klaus Janson, Lou Mougin, Bob Saland, Charlie Santino and Barry Kleggerman. A very short Up Front from Dak this month as he uses the space to outline one of two new features debuting in Comics Interview this issue. The first is ‘Out of Context’ which is to ask several interview subjects the same question to get a varied response. The question for the first instalment is “People are very concerned about the recent spate of deaths of superheroes – Why do you suppose that is?” This time round the responses come from Steve Oliff, Steve Gerber and Terry Austin. This post contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Who is Adam Warlock? Questions like that are common among MCU fans who haven’t read any comics featuring him! Since the universe launched in 2008 with Iron Man, the MCU has been bringing oddballs like Volstagg the Voluminous and Modok to the big screen, giving long-time comic book readers ample opportunity to dump out their years of accumulated knowledge, and no series has indulged in the oddities of the Marvel Universe like Guardians of the Galaxy, which made household names out of Z-listers Drax the Destroyer and Groot.
With Adam Warlock, things are even more complicated. Not only has the character had different names and very different motivations, and not only does he have a fairly convoluted back story, but his prominent stories have involved Thanos and the Infinity Stones, things that are no longer going concerns in the MCU.

Groot appears in different forms in every "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, but whether he's baby-sized or 10 feet tall, Marvel fans probably know his key characteristics: he's an anthropomorphic humanoid tree, best friends with Rocket Raccoon, and can only say "I am Groot." However, the original Groot was quite a different beast (and had a much larger vocabulary).
Groot's comic debut was "Tales to Astonish" #13, published in 1960. This means he predates every modern Marvel hero barring Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner — only he wasn't a hero at first. Co-created by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and his brother Larry Lieber, the original Groot was a malicious alien invader.
"I Challenged Groot, the Monster from Planet X!" was the eight-page chapter 1 of a four-chapter issue. This means Groot got to be on the cover; his cover appearance was brown in the original coloring, but grey in the modern recolor despite the...

"Avengers: Infinity War" is arguably the biggest achievement of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a movie that brings together a decade's worth of plots and characters in an epic conclusion to the saga that perhaps should have been the end of the MCU for a while. Despite all the great character meetings, the big reveals, the emotional beats, and the cool fights, the film feels incomplete. This is mostly because "Infinity War" is half a story, with "Endgame" providing an actual conclusion to the storyline — and some character deaths too.
It turns out, even if these movies are already rather long, we almost got an even longer movie that offered some insight to unanswered questions from the movie, like how the hell Thanos got the power stone before the start of "Infinity War."
Speaking with Near Mint Condition, comics legend and Thanos creator Jim Starlin revealed there is a...

With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel has ushered in the so-called fifth phase of its (infinite?) conveyer belt of superhero media. Supposedly, the distinction is important. Post-Quantumania, though, it seems like it’d be far more helpful to label the next batch of Marvel films and TV shows as “the Jonathan Majors phase”. He’s just that good.
Majors – of TV’s Lovecraft Country and one of the stars of the forthcoming Creed III – isn’t entirely new to the MCU, having popped up at the end of Disney Plus’s Loki, where he offered Tom Hiddleston’s trickster god a few portentous warnings of what’s to come. But Quantumania offers us Majors’s proper introduction as Marvel’s new “big bad”: a mysterious time traveller named Kang the Conqueror. Drax the Destroyer, created by comic book writer Jim Starlin, first appeared in the 55th issue of "The Invincible Iron Man" in February 1973, and would immediately go on to be a supporting character in the space-bound "Captain Marvel" book series. In the lore of the comics, Drax was a human soul that had been implanted into the body of an enormously powerful, green-skinned alien bruiser, specially constructed to fight the Mad Titan Thanos. Over the years, Drax would do battle with his daughter, a powerful psychic named Moondragon. In the process, he would lose his intelligence, but would still go on to carry one of the all-powerful Infinity Gems as a member of the Infinity Watch. Many years later, he would be inducted into the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Concentrated ingots forged from the singularities that founded the universe. That’s how the Collector described the Infinity Stones in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Since that introduction, the Stones have only loomed larger in the minds of audiences, especially when Thanos used them to snap away half of all existence in Avengers: Infinity War. But when we last saw Infinity Stones in the MCU, they were a joke, trinkets to be tossed aside by the Tva in Loki. For some, that gag was among the funniest in the show, but others saw it as a real letdown for weapons that deserved more respect.
If you fall in the latter category, then the latest Guardians of the Galaxy film may be good news. It brings to the big screen Adam Warlock, a mysterious cosmic being played by Will Poulter. In the comics, no...

Adam Warlock has arrived in the MCU. During Marvel’s massive Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, audiences got their first look at “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” — including Will Poulter as Adam Warlock.
As is typical with new MCU characters, he makes a dramatic entrance in the footage, showing up in just the final seconds. Unfortunately, as is also typical, he’s not there for very long. All we see is that he clearly has some kind of conflict with the Guardians. But he looks great.
Though Adam will be making his debut in the MCU via “Guardians of the Galaxy,” his origins in the comics start with a different super family.

Jim Starlin created the character Thanos in 1973 to serve as an ultra-powerful alien threat to multiple heroes in the pages of Marvel Comics. In the world of the comics, Thanos was often described as a nihilist — in the philosophical sense — who was deeply in love with Death. In wanting to woo Death, Thanos gathered up the powerful Infinity Gems (called Stones in the MCU) and magically wiped out half the universe in an instant. Death was unimpressed. The themes of "The Infinity Gauntlet" was to tantalizingly ponder what would happen if a Goth...

Gamora, the superhero character created by Jim Starlin, first appeared in Marvel comics in "Strange Tales" #180 in June of 1975. The last of a species called Zen-Whoberis, Gamora was adopted by the Mad Titan Thanos and raised to be the ultimate fighter and assassin, gaining the nickname of the Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe in the process. Thanos' original plan for Gamora was to assassinate a character called The Magus, an evil twin of Adam Warlock. His name will be mentioned right alongside some of the biggest films of all time like "Avengers: Endgame" as he is the man who created the Mad Titan they call Thanos. Because of the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the long arc that Thanos had, it might not be unfair to say that he is arguably one of the biggest villains in cinema history....

How do you play a perfect person? That’s the challenge posed to actor Will Poulter, who’s preparing to play Adam Warlock in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In a discussion with The Independent, Poulter described his process for getting into shape for the role. In short, it sounds a bit intense: “I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did to get ready for that job,” he told The Independent. In addition to spending lots of time in the gym, Poulter has been adhering to what he calls “a very, very specific diet.” That diet includes “quantities of food you wouldn’t necessarily want to ingest. And other times not enough food.”
Outside of his diet, Poulter can reveal little about his character. “It’s difficult talking about it because with Marvel it’s all secret squirrel…but the most important thing is that your...

In 1973 Marvel latched onto the Bruce Lee, Kung Fu craze and launched the character of Shang Chi into high octane kung fu action in the pages of their comics. Now it is my turn to latch onto the latest craze and talk all things Master of Kung Fu. Firstly I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I am delighted to see it performing so strongly. Everything I have heard has been all positive. With it being only the third Marvel movie since Endgame (the first with a new character) the vultures we undoubtedly circling. Movie goers are always waiting for the MCU movie that breaks the camals back, particuarly when they cross over into new genres. A lot of the positive talk focuses on how fresh it feels. When you consider it is the first ‘origin’ story since Captain Marvel which feels a life time ago now. To pull...

This review of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was first published on August 23.
Marvel Comics creators Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin originally conceived martial-arts hero Shang-Chi as a loose composite of the imagery and mythologies of Bruce Lee, Caine from “Kung Fu” (whom Lee created), and Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu. If Marvel Studios has thus far made slow progress in developing solo adventures for its many superheroes of color, it takes another successful stride, if not quite as sizable as “Black Panther,” with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” a film that builds simultaneously on the lexicon of 50 years of Hong Kong action films and the thematic boilerplate of MCU origin stories.
Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”) injects an earnest, charming humility to the character’s introduction into Marvel’s world of larger than life conflicts, while Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh...

At the end of March during the debut run of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series “The Falcon and the Winter Solider,” comic book writer Ed Brubaker published a newsletter in which he said the show and the buzz around it were making him feel “a bit sick to [his] stomach.” Brubaker co-created the Winter Soldier character in 2005 along with artist Steve Epting. While the MCU and actor Sebastian Stan have popularized the character across the world, Brubaker wrote that “all Steve Epting and I have gotten for creating the Winter Soldier and his storyline is a ‘thanks’ here or there, and over the years that’s become harder and harder to live with.”
Brubaker exposed a common issue at Marvel: Work-for-hire comic book writers and artists don’t get compensated for creating characters and storylines now propelling the MCU on film and television. Marvel owns the Winter Solider, not Brubaker, so...

With the imminent release of the upcoming Shang-Chi movie, I was expecting to see a lot of ‘push’ on the character, and I wasn’t wrong. For me, the Shang-Chi I know and love was the one from the late 1970’s/ early 1980’s. He was originally created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin in 1973, to take advantage of the current martial arts craze then, and taken to near perfection by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy. He started life as the unknown son of Fu Manchu, but when Marvel lost the licence to Fu all that was swiftly swept aside, with vague references to imposters and resurrected replacements. What’s important, though, is that Shang-Chi was such a strong character, developed and written and drawn by such good creators, that he outlasted both the craze that spawned him...

Disney has pushed back the release date of Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” two months to Sept. 3, 2021, the studio announced Tuesday as part of a massive shuffle.
The film was previously set for release on July 9, 2021, the date now occupied by “Black Widow.”

This article contains Wandavision Episode 3 spoilers, and potential spoilers for future episodes, the wider MCU, and Marvel Comics.
I don’t think I’m overstepping when I say that WandaVision is a weird show. It’s intentionally cryptic and there’s a lot going on. It focuses on two characters who have been in several Marvel movies but never truly got the spotlight. Even their romantic relationship in those movies has come off as forced to viewers at times. For comic fans, it’s an easier pill to swallow because it’s something familiar from the comics.
In the comics, the story of Vision and Scarlet Witch was that of two heroes with complicated backstories who found each other, fell in love, and lived happily ever after…until realizing that the point of serialized comics is to keep going and going. Avengers: Endgame felt like the end of an era. Those of us who followed the nascent adventures of Tony Stark in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man could not have foreseen how wide the comic book movie net would be cast. While the natural break in proceedings may cause us to wonder what our superheroes and supervillians are doing with their time, we’re here to look at what is coming next. Twelve years, and twenty-two films down the McU finds itself at an exciting and precarious point. The future, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is upon us and here’s what we’re really looking forward to seeing.
There are spoilers below for everything that has come before, but we’re assuming you’re up to date.

900 numbers for polling purposes, charging users for each call placed, was a 1980s fad that seemed perfect to employ in comic books for some sort of stunt. Editor Denny O’Neil and DC’s Marketing team, led by Bruce Bristow, conceived of the stunt and Jim Starlin wrote the four-part “Death in the Family” storyline to accommodate the stunt. Jason Todd, the second Robin, never was accepted by fans, either under his father, writer Gerry Conway or the post-Crisis writers Max Allan Collins and Jim Starlin. Callers got to say he would live or die.
It went on to become a media sensation, and a closer than expected vote. It also brought down the wrath of Warner Bros who was unaware of the event and the press attention because, back then, DC was a pimple on the conglomerate’s butt and no one considered telling them.

Avengers: Endgame and Marvel Studios auteurs Joe & Anthony Russo, Slugfest directors Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow alum Brandon Routh as well as comic book pioneers Jenette Kahn and Jim Starlin took the virtual dais and New York Comic-Con with fanboy godfather Kevin Smith on Thursday afternoon to talk about the upcoming Quibi series which details the complex history (or some may say rivalry) between DC Comics and Marvel. In January, the Trump campaign turned heads when it released an ad depicting the President as Thanos, the villain from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Comic book writer and artist Jim Starlin, who created Thanos in the 1970s, was quick to decry the ad, noting the irony of the campaign equating Trump to the mass-murdering villain.

If there’s one department within Marvel Studios that is absolutely nailing its job, it’s the casting team. Just look at how tough it is for us to let members of the original cast – like Robert Downey Jr. – go, as we embrace the next wave of superheroes and supervillains. The proof is in the pudding, and they’ve definitely earned our trust when it comes to cherry-picking the new generation of on-screen characters. With that established, let’s get right into it.

With Netflix going hard on interactive movies like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, it was only a matter of time before other studios started experimenting with them. Now, DC’s animated movie division has figured out a way to use the format to make a true-to-life adaptation. With Batman: Death in the Family, a new animated short film, the fans will get decide whether Robin (aka Jason Todd) lives or dies.
Announced by IGN, the movie version of Death in the Family will be fully interactive and let viewers choose one of multiple, branching fates for Jason Todd. It’s also a rough prequel to Batman: Under the Red Hood, one of the more successful comic adaptations in the DC Animated line. Returning voice actors include Thirteen Days dreamboat Bruce Greenwood as Batman, Gary Cole as Commissioner Gordon, John Dimaggio as Joker, and Vincent Martella as Jason.

You might think that at some point we’re going to run out of comic book superheroes. Fortunately, you would be super wrong, because there’s a hell of a lot more in the world of comics than the Avengers and Justice League. And just in the last couple of weeks projects based on Rob Leifeld’s “Prophet” and Scott Lodbell’s “Ball and Chain” were announced. So here are 13 heroes we think are long overdue for the live action film treatment, from fan favorites to cult classics. Hollywood, use your Covid-19 free time and get on this now.

The old saying is that a hero is only as good as their villain, and in that case, the Avengers more than lived up to their title of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they overcame the threat of Thanos. It may have taken a little bit of time travel and a whole lot of sacrifice, but the Infinity Saga ultimately concluded with the Mad Titan defeated and the universe saved.
For years, Thanos loomed in the background as the big bad pulling the strings behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while it hasn’t been confirmed yet, the smart money is on the franchise relying on the same template for the future, with a variety of names being touted as potential candidates to be the next major adversary for the Avengers throughout Phase Four and beyond.

After being teased as the Infinity Saga’s end-of-game boss for years without ever actually doing much to show why, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were keen to see if Thanos would live up to his reputation as the greatest threat that the Avengers had ever faced. Infinity War put any doubts to bed, as the Mad Titan decimated Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and wiped out half of the universe for good measure.
Endgame finally saw him get his comeuppance though, reducing Thanos to dust and seemingly drawing a line under both his reign of terror and the first era of the McU in the process. However, there’s been continued speculation that the franchise isn’t quite done with the character yet, and he could even be set to make a cameo appearance in The Eternals.

Production on Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Shang-Chi” has been temporarily suspended out of concerns about the spread of coronavirus.
A representative for the studio tells TheWrap the suspension will apply only to the first unit and last for a week as director Destin Daniel Cretton has been tested for covid-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, and is self-isolating due to “additional caution” for the safety of his recently-born child.
“As many of you know, Destin, our director, has a new born baby. He wanted to exercise additional caution given the current environment and decided to get tested for Covid-19 today,” the studio said in a statement provided to TheWrap. “He is currently self-isolating under the recommendation of his doctor. While he waits for the results of the test, we are suspending 1st unit production in an abundance of caution until he gets the results this coming week. Bryan Hitch, Warren Ellis and Alex Sinclair keep bringing the goods in the latest issue.
It's amazing how alike Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch's The Batman's Grave is to their modern classic, The Authority. Ellis and Hitch are two of the most important comics creators in the history of the medium - their work on The Authority is one of the brightest dividers between comic book eras there is, like Showcase #4* -- the introduction of Barry Allen that marked the line between the Golden and Silver ages. And they bring that same energy to their new Batman story.
