Chicago – After years of being envisioned with numerous directors (“Noah’s” Darren Aronofsky was once attached), a new version of “RoboCop” has arrived. While the original 80s classic stood out for its foresight into current cultural turmoil, this remake is more a product of movies of the past, and to be more specific, our recent beloved superhero movies.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
This film from director Jose Padilha is a decent one, but it’s more like a prologue than a work that can stand on its own. This is the “Batman Begins” or “Man of Steel” of the hopeful new franchise installation, but without the same amount of intrigue as the former. Instead, “RoboCop” remains stuck between wanting to be dialogue-driven but also accessible with action. The camera itself has more movement than its hero, which makes for a couple dynamic scenes, but not an extraordinary protagonist.

RoboCop versus Terminator - Hc
Written by Frank Miller
Art by Walter Simonson
Colors by Steve Oliff
Lettering by John Workman
Cover by Walter Simonson
Published by Dark Horse
RoboCop vs Terminator is that rare kind of crossover—or “mash up” if you’re under thirty—where the two properties fit together perfectly. Oftentimes Batman will meet Spider-man because it’s a good sales opportunity, and the feeble plot device that brings them together is shoehorned in without concern for whether it’s a good fit or not. RoboCop vs Terminator finds a way to make RoboCop relevant in the Terminator universe by making RoboCop the very thing that creates it. Frank Miller brilliantly takes Alex Murphy’s mind—the perfect blend of human emotion and cold calculating software—and makes it the catalyst for Skynet to achieve sentience. This works so well it doesn’t even violate the continuity of the Terminator films,...

Robots have been a part of cinema since its creation and still make for intriguing on-screen presences. With RoboCop set for a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook, DVD and Blu-ray release on 9th June 2014 from Studiocanal, we count down the most memorable movie cyborgs to have graced our screens.
Evil Maria – Metropolis (1927)
Fritz Lang’s classic sees an inventor, who has created a robot to resurrect his deceased wife, apply the likeness of a popular female worked named Maria (played by Brigitte Helm) in an attempt to ruin her reputation amongst her peers. Once completed, the robot is an evil incarnation of Maria and wreaks havoc in the dystopian future depicted by Lang.

RoboCop officially took over the city of Detroit yesterday as the crime fighter hit the streets to meet and take pictures with fans in celebration of #ROBOCOPDay and the Blu-ray and DVD release of the film.
RoboCop visited iconic landmarks including The Monument to Joe Louis, The Spirit of Detroit, 8 Mile, and Comerica Park. Additionally RoboCop visited top radio stations at Clear Channel, CBS Radio, and Greater Media Detroit and even did the weather on Wjbk-tv, the local Fox affiliate.
The day concluded as he threw the ceremonial first pitch at the beginning of the game between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, with the first 10,000 fans receiving a commemorative RoboCop poster and some lucky fans taking home a copy of the new Blu-ray. RoboCop took photos with players, invaded the press box, and kept the peace with passionate fans.

RoboCop Blu-ray RoboCop has a lot going for it. The PG-13 remake of a 1987 hard R classic is a visually appealing narrative with plenty of glossy action sequences. It ranks up there with Gravity and Avatar as far as its VFX goes. Add in a few nice acting performances and a fine enough script and RoboCop becomes a decently entertaining movie. The only angle that it is really missing is fun. RoboCop is only amusing in moments. Our hero, Detroit Pd officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnamon), is fighting corruption from the very start in director José Padilha.s vision. He.s a relentless officer but also a family man, that is, until an accident forces modern science to play its own hand: turning Alex into the first modern-day robot cop. While Alex has to adjust to the reality of his new body and lifestyle, he also looks to take down...

With a list of characters under his belt that threatens to rival the greats of yesteryear, Oldman is the go-to character actor of our time, consistently delivering dependably top rate performances regardless of genre. On the 5th June, we're holding a free crime classic cinema screening to celebrate the launch of the videogame Murdered: Soul Suspect. You can find out details of the screening, and how you can vote for the film you most want to see, here.
For now, here's our look back at the first of the films you can choose from: Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic, RoboCop.
Nb: The following contains mild spoilers.
There are many reasons why RoboCop endures as one of the best films of the 1980s, but one of them stands out from the rest: it’s so many things at once. It’s a sharp corporate satire. It’s a violent action movie. It’s a pitch-black comedy. It’s a science fiction film about mortality and technology.

Remakes eh? They’re not going away are they? I’m not going to proselytize in favour or against them; as long as punters keep lining up to see the same stories retold every decade or so with younger actors and fancier graphics then studios are going to keep making them. They’re safe bets. But there’s a difference between remaking and sanitising. Paul Verhoeven’s eighties original RoboCop is a scuzzy, violent piece of work and all the better for it. The moment the BBFC’s 12a certificate appears on screen for the 2014 version, it’s hard to not to feel just a little bit disappointed. Of course, you can get away...

Eddie Yang (left), Fausto De Martini (center) and Vitaly Bulgarov (right) How did you get involved with Jose Padilha's RoboCop? Eddie Yang: Peter Oillataguerre at MGM, called us up for a meeting and to do some initial sketches to help with the writing of the script. I went and met with Jose Padilha and some of the producers, apparently, Jose’s idea for how Alex Murphy integrated with the suit was very complex and he wanted it illustrated to clarify what he was thinking. Along with that they wanted a few initial attempts at the suit. Conceptual design for me is a very exploratory process where you start with the director’s notes and then you collaborate with other artists and eventually narrow down a design. At the time RoboCop was pretty much an open field design-wise. The story was focused on the creation of RoboCop much like how...

The future of law enforcement is here, or back, or however you want to say it. Look I’m just going to get this out of the way now: “RoboCop” 2014 or Robo2.0 is Not a straight retelling of the classic 80’s Paul Verhoeven flick. It’s just not, and it never tries to be. I am a child of the 80’s. I grew up with big hair, loud music, questionable fashion trends, and bigger than life action movie heroes. When the original “RoboCop” hit it was like a surge of lightning to the industry. Youngins like myself loved the over the top violence and tongue in cheek satire, while completely missing the subtext and biting social commentary about inequality, corporate greed, consumerism, and drug use. Okay, maybe not that last one. Verhoeven’s film was about America at that time. Okay let’s get the basics out the way for...

Depending on which side of the fence you reside on, 1987’s RoboCop is either a great footnote in cinema or it’s a pure junk pop cinematic experience. I tend to think it’s the latter. Yes, I love RoboCop mightly and you can’t argue that the movie didn’t nail what it set out to achieve, but like a lot of Paul Verhoeven’s films, there are moments where the word cringe comes into play. I guess that’s the beauty of Paul Verhoeven and for a stretch of time back in the day; there was no one like him. With this being the second Verhoeven film to get a remake (the first being the truly awful Total Recall remake), there was more than a fair share of people (including myself...

Paul Verhoeven’s “RoboCop,” from 1987, was a singular work of pop art, blending together an intriguing sci-fi concept, biting satire, considerable action violence, social commentary and more. It sparked various sequels and spin-off properties and now, more than 15 years later, a reboot from respected Brazilian-born director José Padilha (“Bus 174,” “Elite Squad”) that uses the same basic conceit as a framework to explore the place of drones and militarized robotics in modern society. Taking over for Peter Weller is Joel Kinnaman, who stars as Detroit police officer Alex Murphy – rescued from death after a car bomb explosion and refashioned into the emotionally compromised title character. A long time ago, there was a Robocop 2. Director Paul Verhoeven would not return from the first film, nor would screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, and gone with them was a sense of satire, intelligence, or purpose. To follow Robocop, director Irvin Kershner and writers Frank Miller (yes, that Frank Miller) and Walon Green side-stepped a chance to build upon that landmark first film with an evolution of themes and instead doubled down on the misanthropy and violence. What resulted was a mean, borderline toxic stew of outlandish science fiction and belligerent 90.s .tude that killed the heart of the first picture by finding new ways to be aggressively anti-Alex Murphy. In other words, they tried following up Robocop before, and it just didn.t work. To think they might try again, with Sony.s latest upgrade of the source boggles the mind. They barely made it out...

RoboCop, the latest in a string of '80s remakes, has a lot in common with the original directed by Paul Verhoven.. However, anyone expecting the same shock to the system that the 1987 flick delivered, will be disappointed. As police officer Alex Murphy, The Killing's Joel Kinnaman wears the suit well. He delivers in his role, as do the performances from the stellar supporting cast which includes Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish. Read on before hopping into the squad car. 1. Ptsd Soldier: One of the strongest angles in the remake is the focus on Alex Murphy's intense emotional and physical struggles following a near-fatal car bomb. Kinnaman does the role originally...

New RoboCop 2014 movie delivered great hardcore action, drama & more. Columbia Pictures (Sony) released their new action/sci-fi/remake flick, "RoboCop," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was pretty entertaining, serving up lots of action, coupled with intense drama, and more. The movie stars: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. In the new flick, the year is set in 2028, and revolves around good cop, Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and this OmniCorp company that's desperately trying to get approval for their army of robot protectors be put on American soil so they can maximize their revenue and profits. However, they keep getting turned down, because the American public doesn't feel good about an emotionless robot trying to protect them. In response to this, OmniCorp CEO ,Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton...

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? We've got the future under control. We do? Now in theaters everywhere is the remake of yet another 1980's classic, RoboCop. This new take on RoboCop stars Joel Kinnaman as Detroit's Alex Murphy, directed by Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha (Elite Squad). The impressive cast includes: Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams and Samuel L. Jackson. So is it any good? Does it desecrate the original? Is it one big pointless remake, or not? If you've seen it, leave a comment with your thoughts on the RoboCop remake. To fuel the fire, I have not yet seen the new RoboCop myself, as Sony chose not to screen it for me (I assume this post is why). Until I can see it and update this with my own thoughts, here is an excerpt from Jeremy's 7.5/10 review of the movie: "It is,...

I don’t know if you remember, but I was not the biggest advocate for the reboot of RoboCop. I did, however, promise that I would give it a shot, and I have to say that I am happy I did. I walked in determined to hate the movie and walked out pleasantly surprised.
Director José Padilha took on the daunting task of rebooting a cult classic, and I feel that he hit the mark. A lot of people seated around me were RoboCop superfans, and you could tell that they were expecting a word for word remake with updated graphics. If that is what you are looking for, that is not what you are going to get. For you superfans out there, Padilha did not make a movie that totally ignores the original. There is plenty that I would like to say about this, but I will let you...

Abbie Cornish has played both tough and tender over the course of her career, but in the case of the new “RoboCop” remake the 31-year-old Australian actress is required to do a bit of both — and in limited screen time to boot. As Clara Murphy, the wife of Detroit police officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), she must make the difficult decision, following his near-mortal wounding by a car bomb, to authorize the extraordinary life-saving measures which eventually turn him into the emotionally compromised title character. Clara must then live with the consequences, wondering if there’s ever a way to get her husband back. Action abounds, of course, and social and ethical [ Read More ]

Everyone has their own idea on what constitutes the best remake, but most people can agree that the goal should be to improve upon the original in some meaningful way or to at least make the new film salient for a modern audience. The best remakes (John Carpenter’s The Thing, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, the Coen brothers’ True Grit) take the core plot elements of the originals but find their own identity in relevant stories, fascinating characters, and casts that fully engage the material and the audience. RoboCop (2014) has chosen a different path all together, and while it avoids the degree of pointlessness reached by far too many Hollywood retreads, it still fails to justify its existence. It’s a cleaner package, but the contents are far less filling. You know the story. The multinational OmniCorp corporation has made a fortune developing robots to secure the streets, but while the rest of the world has...

Although the idea of remaking director Paul Verhoeven's classic 1987 sci-fi satire "RoboCop" may seem blasphemous to some, its ideas about technology, man-vs.-machine, ruthless corporate greed and the militarization of civil society are just as relevant today as they were more than a quarter-century ago. Wisely, Brazilian director Jose Padilha ("Elite Squad") has adapted the original's concepts to a modern setting and, most importantly, found Joel Kinnaman to make the role of Alex Murphy/RoboCop his own while honoring the legendary portrayal by Peter Weller.

‘Robocop’ 2014 review: ‘More interesting ideas than it can properly address’ You’ll have to excuse older moviegoers if they feel an almost weekly tinge of nostalgia with the latest announcement that their favorite film from the ’80s is being treated to a big-money remake. And yet, while you’d think 40-somethings would be thrilled that anyone in the film industry cares if they buy a movie ticket, any news of a Reagan-era remake is usually met with harrumphs of disapproval from Gen-Xers who hold these films so close to their hearts that a reboot is dismissed as downright sacrilegious. No one should deny or minimize a person’s formative movie house memories, but there’s really no argument to be made that, say, Footloose, a respectable creative achievement from 1984, is such a flawless gem that it cannot be successfully revamped and even improved. The fact that it was remade in...

Film: "RoboCop"; Cast: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Samuel L. Jackson; Director: Jose Padilha; Rating: **
The original Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop" in 1987 was ahead of its times with its concept and presentation, while this one by Jose Padilha, literally and figuratively drags time.
A character-centric film of a half-man, half-machine enforcer of law, "RoboCop" delves in the transformation of a human being into an emotionless Robotic Killing Machine. The film portrays Robocop Alex Murphy's (Joel Kinnaman) attempt in cleaning up the city and then tuning his computerized memory on those who tried to.

Chicago – You get the sense that a writer for the new “RoboCop” felt very proud of himself when he coined the cheeky word “robophobic” as a play on a current cultural hot button. The Samuel L. Jackson moment of self-fulfilled glory reminded me of the rest of the plot that was missing.

(We're going to get into spoilers for the new RoboCop almost immediately, so if that will bother you, feel free to turn back now.) There's a scene relatively early in Jose Padilha's remake of RoboCop that left me legitimately shaken. Police officer Alex Murphy, gruesomely disfigured in a car bombing that was supposed to take his life, has been sold to the robotics company Omnicorp, which transforms him into "the future of law enforcement." But Murphy had no say in any of this -- one moment, he's in pain on his driveway and the next, he's waking up in a facility wearing some kind of metal suit. Or at least he thinks it's a suit. When he demands to know what's left of him, Gary Oldman's sympathetic scientist shows him. First, his...

Like many of director Paul Verhoeven.s films, the original RoboCop is an incredibly violent film. Going gung-ho after a restricted rating, the movie constantly goes way over the top with its blood and gore, from the torture, dismemberment and .death. of Peter Weller.s Alex Murphy to the comeuppance for villainy that comes in the action-packed third act. In addition to creating a strange, entertainment value to the feature, the violence served to help the audience understand why a future Detroit would employ RoboCop to patrol the streets. By contrast, however, the new remake from Brazilian director José Padilha is rated PG-13, cutting down on the extremely graphic content that was so crucial to the first film. It was a controversial choice made by the filmmaker, but one that star Joel Kinnaman wholeheartedly defended when I had the chance to speak with him a couple weeks back at a...

The new RoboCop isn’t terrible, which shouldn’t be an accomplishment. But we live in a world that produced 2012′s Total Recall, not simply a bad movie, but one of the most misbegotten works of popular entertainment in history, “popular” and “entertainment” both used loosely. The Recall remake replaced everything that made the 1990 Recall entertaining with tropes purchased third-hand from a garage sale at Christopher Nolan’s house.

RoboCop (2014) is a straight-up reboot and retelling of the original RoboCop (1987). Once again, a Detroit-based cop is murdered and used for an experiment in modern policing by the shadowy corporation OmniCorp, to promote their own interests rather than to truly protect the public it supposedly serves. The hero is Alex Murphy/RoboCop (Joel Kinnaman). He is a good cop and family man. Murphy patrols the streets of Detroit with his partner, Jack Lewis (Michael K. Smith), in the year 2028. When Jack is wounded early in the film, Murphy starts to investigate since he is not the sort to let that kind of thing go unpunished. The responsible parties know this and set out to get Murphy before he can do the same.
This leaves us with a critically wounded police officer and a wife with many awful decisions to make. Clara Murphy (Abbie Cornish) is faced with a horrifically damaged...

With the remake of Paul Verhoeven's "Robocop" lumbering mechanically into theaters nationwide this week, there has been a lot of talk, online and elsewhere, about how the remake simply cannot live up to the 1987 original. But what there's been precious little of is a discussion of why the original film is so highly regarded; instead the deafening pre-release backlash just seems like a general kind of foggy, nostalgia-tinged outrage that is both inarticulate and unhelpful. And, all things considered, the remake isn't all that bad; read our colleague's review here. Still, there's no question that the remake won't manage to have the same kind of impact the original did, so we're taking this chance (having longed for one for a while) to look back to the future of Detroit, and examine exactly why that original film felt so fresh and new."Robocop," released on July 17th, 1987, and based on...

Any movie that tries a lot harder than it needs to is all right in my book. And that’s exactly the case with RoboCop, an impressive reboot of the Paul Verhoeven classic that, much to my delight, fires on all cylinders, blending furious action, strong acting and an inventive script to create a film that uses familiar parts to build something sleek, smart and entirely capable of going toe-to-toe with Verhoeven’s original.
I’m well aware that fans of the original RoboCop will balk at that praise, call it unsubstantiated and probably even berate me for entirely missing the point, but hear me out. What Verhoeven’s film did fantastically was address the political hot topics and concerns of its time (declining industry, privatization, etc.) by playing them out in a futuristic, but believable, setting. And while José Padilha’s PG-13 remake arrives without the original’s enticing ultraviolence,...

Joel Kinnaman is, if nothing else, about to have an interesting few days. The first of his two movies out this week, RoboCop, is Brazilian director Jose Padilha’s surprisingly philosophical and intense “reboot” of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 action classic. In it, Kinnaman plays Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer who is maimed and rebuilt to become the titular futuristic lawman for a dystopian future. The other film is a little lower on the radar. Easy Money: Hard to Kill is the second installment of the Swedish crime franchise Easy Money (original title Snabba Cash), in which Kinnaman plays a former business student embroiled in the world of drug smuggling. The two films offer a telling glimpse of Kinnaman the actor: half-Swedish, half-American, splitting his time between European films and shows like Easy Money and the Johan Falk series, and American ones like RoboCop, Safe House, and The Killing.

Lots of people flock to the movies during a snowstorm, but if you're thinking about schlepping your way to the theater, the critics wouldn't necessarily recommend you hit up a screening of RoboCop. In fact, reviews for the reboot of the 1987 film are almost as dreary as the weather. Despite an impressive cast including Joel Kinnaman (as Alex Murphy/RoboCop), Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish and Jennifer Ehle, the reviews ranged from dismal to decent. Here's more of what the critics have to say... • Manohla Dargis writes in the New York Times that RoboCop is "a nicely cast, respectable remake of the wittily corrosive 1987 Paul Verhoeven film," adding that...

It's hard to believe, but it's been almost three decades since Paul Verhoeven and Peter Weller first introduced audiences to the original "RoboCop." Two sequels, countless kids' toys, video games, comic books, and a few short-lived TV shows later though, and it's much easier to believe that the beloved 1987 sci-fi classic is getting a modern reboot, only a year and a half after a remake of Verhoeven's "Total Recall" also hit theatres.
