After a year of grounded flights, video conference calls, and countless other workarounds to help the global film industry through the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival are ready to roll out the red carpet for the 23rd edition.
With travel restrictions in Europe and across much of the globe easing in recent weeks, this year’s hybrid edition will include roughly 100 industry guests taking part in the activities of the Agora, the festival’s industry arm, which will host events both online and onsite in Thessaloniki from June 25-July 4.
The organizers have made the most of recent experience. Last year, as the pandemic began spreading across Europe, the festival was forced to hastily pivot to an online edition, livestreaming the pitching forum of the annual Agora Doc Market just days after the festival’s 22nd edition was postponed. “Everything was coordinated in three days,” says Agora head Yianna Sarri.

The 2020 Berlin Film Festival, the first edition under new artistic director Carlo Chatrian, has unveiled its first wave of titles.
Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio, starring Roberto Benigni, will have its international premiere at the festival as a Berlinale Special Gala. The team have removed the ‘out of competition’ classification this year and those films will now play as Special Galas. Pinocchio is released theatrically in Italy this weekend and Berlin will mark its festival premiere.
“Garrone succeeds in re-telling the well-known story with his very own world of images. Although he is faithful to Carlo Collodi’s ideas, he has nevertheless created a very personal Pinocchio that is much more cheerful than we’ve experienced before,” commented Carlo Chatrian on the selection.
Also announced today were four films in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino program, which presents debut features. The section will open with Kids Run from Barbara Ott, whose graduation...

The arrival this month of hundreds of foreign industry guests for the Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival in some ways echoes the history of this ancient, seaside city, long a melting pot of civilizations and cultures.
“Historically speaking, Thessaloniki was the center of the Mediterranean and Balkan region,” says Yianna Sarri, head of the festival’s industry arm, Agora. “So keeping that in mind, we tried to build the Agora around that idea.”
As Tiff celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, Agora can point to its own growth as it kicks off its 15th edition. Sarri notes that in the market’s early days, many of the projects pitched at the Crossroads Co-Production Forum never made it out of development.
But she’s witnessed a dramatic shift in the past five years, with an increasing number of films not only seeing completion, but also landing premieres at top-tier festivals.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Filipa César Spell Reel (2017) is playing October 10 - November 19, 2017 on Mubi in the United Kingdom. People living in the first years of their country’s independence have always known that history isn’t something that comes down to you in books and museums; to them, history is something they work on their knees and get their hands dirty to build brick by brick, frame by frame. Spell Reel, a collaborative film directed by Filipa César, is a document that records the film history of Guinea-Bissau. By doing this, it ends up being an archive of the nation-forming narratives of Guinea-Bissau. Deviating from the idea of a monolithic, self-sustaining history, the film begins with uncertainty and unfamiliarity that is only partially resolved by an interpreter who punctuates the story with silence and translation. We begin by being twice removed from...
