Just as Netflix tries to gain traction in the Middle East by backing local genre series, such as its first Arab original, “Jinn,” from Jordan, and Egypt’s upcoming “Paranormal,” Beirut’s Maskoon Fantastic Film Festival is launching the region’s first platform dedicated to genre films.
Five Arabic-language projects, ranging from a zombie comedy to a supernatural female-empowerment drama, have been selected for the Maskoon Fantastic Lab’s pilot edition, which is set for Nov. 7-8 in Beirut’s Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts. All the projects have a strong sociopolitical subtext, organizers say.
“Arab producers and film festivals haven’t really embraced genre cinema yet,” said Myriam Sassine, the fest’s chief exec. “So we felt the need for a platform to encourage and help those filmmakers who would like to venture into genre”

American independent cinema has gone through several generations since the end of the 1990s. The accelerated evolution might mirror the technological advances of the past 20 years, from the easy availability of early, consumer-grade digital cameras to the ubiquity of streaming platforms, as well as new social networks and the rising impact of regional film festivals.
You can put all that in perspective by spending a week in, of all places, Wrocław, Poland, where the ninth edition of the American Film Festival concluded this fall. What a surprising city Rotterdam is and the Festival and Cinemart are full of surprises too.
Being in The Netherlands is like a homecoming for me. From the beginning, the festival has profiled itself as a promoter of alternative, innovative and non-commercial films, with an emphasis on the Far East and developing countries. It has become one of the most important events in the film world, an integral part of the winter circuit of Sundance, Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals.

Though the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) is going on its 46th year and its Cinemart on its 35th, 2017 marks only the third year since festival director Bero Beyer, a former producer, continues to reshape the event into a more focused selection of film projects whose life on the film circuit will have an impact beyond the festival scene itself, a field that is becoming increasingly crowded for many reasons which would take another article to explain.
But there will be quite a discussion about this very issue. The Rotterdam Cinemart, the first co-production market ever, started in 1982 and brought the then-small international film community together in a uniquely egalitarian and intimate way that only the Dutch could offer. In many ways it became a victim of its own success, mentoring similar events in Hong Kong and So. Korea and then copied by numerous others, but without the care and warmth of the original event.

Venice Film Festival Biennale College – Cinema sidebar is like a low-lying fruit tree that hasn’t yet been picked, and from the past two editions Sundance programmers have basketed Tim Sutton’s Memphis (2014) and Rania Attieh & Daniel Garcia’s H. (2015). We’re thinking the fest might go three for three with The Fits. Anna Rose Homer fiction feature debut hasn’t yet be shown outside the Lido and it’s coming into 2016 with terrific critical buzz with THR calling it a “rough-diamond discovery” French institute Cahiers du cinéma giving the film major props. The filmmaker touched several facets of the film indie film biz over the years getting her feet wet as a camera assistant, with grip credits for Afterschool and Tiny Furniture and her most recent gigs were as a producer on Jody Lee Lipes’ Ballet 422 and still photographer on Matt Wolf’s Teenage. Richard Linklater won for Best Director and Patricia Arquette won the Best Supporting actress for team Boyhood, while Iñárritu’s Birdman claimed Best Picture, Best Actor (Michael Keaton) and Cinematographer (Emmanuel Lubezki) at the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards last night. The split might foreshadow how the Oscars play out tonite, as the Middleweight Saturday ceremony and Heavyweight Sunday gig are more or less interchangeable. The two films that might gain a little further traction from the tent spotlight include Nightcrawler (which picked up Best First Feature and Best Screenplay) and Whiplash, Damien Chazelle’s deservedly won for Best Supporting Actor and Editing categories. Also worth pointing out is a Land Ho! win in the category we love the most: the John Cassavetes Award. Here are the winners and noms.

Just one night before the Oscars take over town, stars flocked to the 2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards on the Santa Monica Beach on Saturday (February 21).
Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell joined forces for co-hosting duties and put on a fabulous show as actors and actresses including Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and Emma Stone turned up to lend their star power to the IFC airing ceremony.
As for this year's cream of the crop, Michael Keaton (Birdman), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home top honors in the lead and supporting acting categories.
Meanwhile, in what very well may be an indicator for what's to come tomorrow at the Academy Awards, "Birdman" was recognized as Best Feature while Richard Linklater nabbed Best Director accolades for "Boyhood".

The 2015 Spirit Awards were handed out today and it was Birdman taking Best Feature and Best Actor (Michael Keaton) while Boyhood went home a double winner taking Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). However, while that's the result for the two big guns that will be going head-to-head at tomorrow night's Oscars, Nightcrawler was also a double winner taking Best Screenplay and Best First Feature, both awarded to writer/director Dan Gilroy. Otherwise, no big surprises with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) taking Best Actress and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) taking Supporting Actor, Citizenfour took Best Documentary and Birdman scored a third win for Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography. Justin Simien (Dear White People) took home Best First Screenplay and, whoa!, Look!, Whiplash was also a double winner, with Tom Cross winning for Best Editing (well deserved!) and anticipated Oscar winner in the same category, Ida won Best Foreign Language Film.

My first Sundance is in the books and it went much too quickly. As evidenced by the fact I’m still publishing reviews, my eyes were obviously bigger than my stomach. Still, I’d rather see too many movies than too few, and there were some hidden gems in this year’s lineup. Here are my Top Five films, along with a couple of honorable mentions because I’m feeling generous (and sleep deprived).
Honorable Mentions:
The Stanford Prison Experiment
Written by Tim Talbott
Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez
This ultra-glossy dramatization of the infamous Zimbardo psychology experiment didn’t disappoint. Tense throughout, Alvarez uses an impressive supporting cast and impeccable editing to create a palpable sense of impending doom. It’s a frightening peek into the human psyche executed with relentless precision. With the right marketing, this film could make a serious awards run next autumn.
The Forbidden Room

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries”…
Rania Attieh: At the request of a good friend, I downloaded the iPhone game called Monument Valley and was completely blown away and mesmerized by the beauty of the world and the graphics. I burned through the levels like butter on toast. It was fantastic. Cinematically speaking, the Cronenberg film ‘Maps to the Stars‘ was a real and unexpected treat. Experiences such as this are always enjoyed. This year the 19 year old wunderkind musician King Krule (formerly Zoo Kid) also really grew on me. His deep, soulful music that seemed mature beyond his years definitely put spins in my dizzy, and I’d love to be able to put him in a film at some point, as his look is one to remember. Kk if you’re reading this, let’s talk.

H.
Written & Directed by Rania Attieh & Daniel Garcia
USA | Argentina, 2014
There are dozens of striking images in the new sci-fi thriller H., and almost all of them are creepy. Much like 2014’s evocative masterpiece Under the Skin, writer-directors Rania Attieh and Daniel Garcia aren’t interested in telling a cohesive story so much as creating an auditory and visual experience. Frustrating and fascinating in equal measure, H. is a brilliant mindbender that cinephiles should seek out.
There are strange things afoot in the village of Troy, New York. Objects streak across the sky, a black horse gallops through the streets, and alarming numbers of people disappear without a trace. And, oh yes, there is an enormous head floating down the Hudson River. H. begins with a quote from Homer’s Iliad and continues to borrow heavily from the Greek epic throughout. Fittingly, the two main characters are both named ‘Helen.
