There are two schools of thought when it comes to viewing Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 film Contagion here in the mess that is 2020. On the other hand, you have those who think that’s an absolutely terrible idea, one that unnecessarily upsets you and causes extra anxiety in a time of crisis. Honestly, both are true, and that’s part of why it works so well. Directing a script by Scott Z. Burns, Soderbergh put forth a riveting depiction of a viral outbreak. Today, we’ll dive in and give it a new review, as seen with a modern lens. For those who don’t remember, the film is a drama about what a global pandemic could be like in the modern world. Hulu will not be going back to Mars — at least not with Sean Penn.
The streamer has canceled Penn’s space-exploration drama “The First” after one season. The high-profile project was Penn’s first-ever starring role on a TV series, but it was met with lackluster reviews.
The series followed the first human mission to Mars in the not-too-distant future. The character drama focused on the astronauts who embark on the mission but also their families, loved ones and the people participating back on Earth. It explored the challenges that go into interplanetary colonization.

When Beau Willimon was a kid, his father would leave home for up to five months at a time. Henry Willimon was a captain in the U.S. Navy and worked as an engineer on nuclear subs. For those long stretches at sea, he couldn’t even send messages home.
“One of my earliest memories, when we were stationed at Pearl Harbor, was him taking me down into a sub,” Willimon said. “To a four-year-old kid, it’s a spaceship. You’ve never seen anything like it. You’re in this completely enclosed, high-tech environment, staring through a periscope, and you know this thing is traversing the oceans underwater for months on end.”
Willimon credits these early memories for piquing his interest in space travel, and thus his new Hulu drama, “The First.” Chronicling mankind’s first manned mission to Mars, the eight-part first season also examines a bond between father...

Before Beau Willimon started writing, he was painting and drawing, and he thought that would be his profession. Instead, he went on to create series such as “House of Cards” for Netflix and “The First” for Hulu, the latter on which he finally got to dramatize his chosen art form of oil paintings.
“The First” centers on astronauts preparing for the first mission to Mars, but one of them, Tom Hagerty (Sean Penn), has a daughter, Denise (Anna Jacoby-Heron), who uses art as a way to work through trauma. Willimon himself painted all of the pieces depicted in the show.
“Just from a personal and selfish standpoint, I wanted to write what I know,” he tells Variety.
But “on a deeper level,” he notes, “there isn’t much difference between scientists and artists.” Both, he says, are trying to understand the universe — and they have to use a lot of...

(Spoilers ahead for “The First” Season 1)
Hulu’s new series “The First” is more about the journey to Mars, creator Beau Willimon says. It’s also about “human journeys” inward.
The juxtaposition of artistic and scientific exploration is central to the series, and can be personified in Tom Hagerty (Sean Penn), an astronaut on the first manned mission to Mars, and his artist and recovering drug addict daughter Denise (Anna Jacoby-Heron).
“The inward journey that an artist takes, into their own black void, to their own abyss, and [Denise] certainly does with confronting the loss of her mother and her own demons, I think is just as vast and perilous as a journey to another planet,” Willimon told TheWrap in an interview before the series premiere. “And that, for me, is what the show is actually about. Which is not just the journey to Mars, but journeys. Human journeys. Some of those are inward.

Hulu’s The First is being sold as the story of Sean Penn leading the crew chosen for the first manned mission to Mars. This is two bait-and-switches for the price of one. For starters, when the series begins, Penn is not actually part of that first crew until something goes wrong and he’s asked to lead a second mission. And the series, from House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, is barely interested in Mars (which no character gets physically close to in Season One), preferring to use the...

Of the many early attributes fueling “The First,” the opening score best captures the magnitude of what Hulu’s new drama series has in store. Horns quietly rise over a simmering hum until, just as the sun cracks through the darkness and casts a brilliant sliver of light over the red planet, Colin Stetson’s arrangement reaches a powerful crescendo; it calls to mind Hans Zimmer’s “Man of Steel” theme, but it’s reminiscent of any awe-inspiring moment made accessible by living among the stars, rather than resting under them.
Among other things, Beau Willimon’s first serialized story since “House of Cards” inspires this kind of lofty rhetoric. Its sheer optimism matches the long-standing American mythos once defined by our trip to the moon instead of the ugly present mired by contentious connections between individuals, parties, and societies. It’s so earnest in its belief in people, the drive to reach Mars,...

There’s a troubling trend on TV these days: shows that way overextend their storylines in order to fill out a full season’s worth of episodes. With Peak TV competing for our eyeballs by throwing hundreds of hours of TV at us, we’re facing an epidemic of storytelling bloat, and Hulu’s The First is just the latest glaring example. It’s a high-minded, immaculately shot drama that takes a potentially exciting premise — the first manned space mission to Mars — and stretches it to the point where all the excitement is slowly drained out of it.

No matter how far you travel from home, you can never escape yourself. This sad fact underpins “The First,” Hulu’s new streaming series about the team undertaking a manned mission to Mars. The mission and the series is led by Sean Penn as Tom Hagerty, a seasoned astronaut whose time on the job has, historically, provided him the opportunity to escape a turbulent personal life, including a daughter (Anna Jacoby-Heron) with whom he’s effectively forfeited a relationship. As he prepares for his most challenging mission yet, long-simmering resentments, ones he’d do well to meaningfully address for perhaps the first time, are coming to a head here on Earth.
It’s an canny formulation—one man looks to the stars even as crises, at least in part of his own making, keep him bound to familiar soil. No surprise that it sprung from the mind of Beau Willimon,...

The first look at “The First” is here. Hulu dropped a teaser Tuesday for its new series, which finds Sean Penn going where no man (except Matt Damon) has gone before: Mars.
Penn plays Tom Hagerty, an astronaut on the first human mission to the fourth planet in the drama that’s set in the near future. The moody teaser is jam-packed with stunning visuals, accompanied with a contemplative voiceover by Penn musing on the vast unknown.
“I always think of [Carl] Sagan‘s words: Every human being who ever was lived out their lives on a mound of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” he says.

The last time Sean Penn delivered wistful voiceovers while his character looked off into the distance, all intercut with abstract images from space and nature, we got “The Tree of Life.” This time, in the new Hulu drama “The First,” it looks like creator Beau Willimon may have captured a bit of that same spirit.
“The First” is the latest Hulu original series, created by Willimon (who also brought “House of Cards” to Netflix) and starring Penn as astronaut Tom Hagerty, part of the first manned mission to visit Mars. This initial look at the series also includes Natascha McElhone, who plays Laz Ingram, a member of the financial team behind the mission.
If we’re not mistaken, there’s also a quick glimpse of Bill Camp, who at this point might just having a standing invite for a supporting role in any Hulu prestige TV venture going forward..

Beau Willimon is following up “House of Cards” with a series of the opposite intent.
“In a lot of ways, it’s a 180-degree departure from ‘House of Cards’ for me,” Willimon told Atx TV Festival attendees during a first look at his upcoming Hulu drama, “The First.” He said the Netflix series he developed asked, ‘When the worst of humanity assumes power, what does that look like?’ Well, we know. There’s something appealingly retro about MTV’s latest scripted offering—and not just because Finding Carter bears a striking resemblance to Caroline B. Cooney’s beloved 1990 novel The Face on the Milk Carton. (You may know it better as the inspiration for a TV movie that aired in 1995).

We have the first new drama series commissioned by MTV‘s new programming team under president Susanne Daniels. The network has picked up hourlong pilot Finding Carter to series with a 12-episode order in the kind of success story that inspires young writers. Up-and-coming scribe Emily Silver, a story editor on Bones, originally penned Finding Carter as a writing sample, which was sent to ABC Family and MTV in 2012. When Mina Lefevre moved from ABC Family to MTV to head scripted development in January 2013, she put the project on a fast track. Veteran Terri Minsky (Sex And The City) was brought in as executive producer and, following a quick rewrite, the script landed a pilot order, which has now been followed by a series green light. Finding Carter, directed by Scott Speer is about teenage girl Carter (Kathryn Prescott) who seemingly has the perfect life with fun-loving single mom Lori...

Title: Contagion Directed By: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Larry Clarke, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Jennifer Ehle, Demetri Martin, Elliott Gould, Bryan Cranston, Chin Han Contagion is the scariest movie of the year, and that’s coming from someone with a pension for horror films. Unlike most worldwide disaster movies, Contagion doesn’t sensationalize the issue on a grand scale in an effort to shock the audience, rather it tells the tale via a variety of intimate scenarios, both giving the audience that vast scope, but also putting you right in the middle of the disaster alongside the characters that are fighting through it....

Contagion
Starring Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Rated PG-13
Let me start off by saying that I'm not a huge fan of disaster movies. I'm just not fond of the man versus environment theme, whether it be an earthquake, climate change, or a meteor hurling towards Earth, or even a deadly virus outbreak (such as the movie called Outbreak). There was just something missing in those films, but I was never quite sure what. But I think Steven Soderbergh found it in Contagion.
We begin our story on Day 2 of the epidemic, with Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) arriving home after a business trip to China. She isn't well, and after she collapses in a seizure her husband Mitch (Matt Damon) takes her to the hospital, where she passes away. This heralds the beginning out a virus outbreak, which causes the Cdc led by Dr. Ellis...
