- Smith's body was found in the wreckage of a single-engine Piper Tri-Pacer light plane in the foothills of the Whetstone Mountains about five miles southeast of Benson, Arizona. Also killed were Dr. T. C. Johnson, president of the New Cochise County Junior College at Douglas, and Donald Ensign, superintendent of schools at Sierra Vista. The trio were on their way to an education convention at Luke Air Force Base in Maricopa County. Smith, the pilot, had just received his license one month before the crash and weather was rainy with low visibility.
