2017-08-03T09:27:37-07:00'Power' Generates Big Money for Starz
A $100 million check is a nice way to start a relationship. That’s the amount generated for Lionsgate, from the licensing of Starz original series “Power” and others to Hulu — a sum unanticipated at the time of the $4.4 billion pact that combined Lionsgate and Starz in December.
The Hulu deals are a reflection of how the enlarged studio is capitalizing on new opportunities, from the addition of key hires such as Jared Goetz to help drive distribution, to synergizing with Liberty Global, which under John Malone owns a 3.4% stake in Lionsgate.
Capitalizing on Starz content is one of the challenges facing Goetz, who has just joined Lionsgate to lead sales in North America. Having overseen film and TV sales to Netflix, Amazon and Hulu during his long tenure at Disney, he has the digital experience Lionsgate craves as potential new buyers, including Facebook and Apple, enter the market.
“He did billions of dollars’ worth of deals,” says president of Lionsgate’s worldwide TV and digital distribution group Jim Packer, to whom Goetz reports. “We need that expertise. In one way, his hire future-proofs our team.”

Hulu has made its first significant acquisition of a festival film, joining Lionsgate on North American rights to Jeff Baena’s recent Sundance world premiere.
The deal marks the arrival on the acquisitions scene of another major digital force after well-documented seismic forays by Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Insiders had been predicting for some time that the streaming service known primarily for TV would make a move into film acquisition.
Hulu has a non-exclusive deal with Epix and announced an exclusive documentary output partnership with IFC in Park City, however this marks the first time it has acquired a feature, rather than merely licensed streaming rights.
Hulu, which has brought on more staff of late and expanded its headquarters in Santa Monica’s so-called Silicon Beach, will stream Joshy exclusively after the theatrical run on Lionsgate’s specialty label Lionsgate Premiere.

Right now, two separate high-profile Indiegogo campaigns are raising millions for shows based around the fan culture found at conventions. Beyond those projects, though, there will soon be plenty more online media aimed at self-proclaimed "fanpeople." Lionsgate and San Diego Comic-Con have teamed up for an online video service that will showcase archival convention footage, films, and TV shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the service is the result of two years of talks between the two companies. On the on-demand service, content from Lionsgate and other studios will meet 45 years of Comic-Con history.
"The fan base for the kind of films and television series showcased at Comic-Con has grown exponentially," said Lionsgate president of worldwide TV and digital distribution Jim Packer, "and a subscription video-on-demand service is the ideal platform to capture the magic and excitement of the Comic-Con experience year-round as well as the perfect vehicle for Comic-Con fans to discover new content.
