With a hiss of brakes, and a rush of steam, the next phase of SFW9’s launch is engaged. We have lots and lots to tell you, so settle down, grab your beverage of choice, put your feet up, and let’s go!
That’s right folks… Its time to start planning for SFW9, coming to you next March in Wales and we have a little bit of bad news but a massive whole bunch of good news to soften that blow. First things first though: there are only 18, yes 18 rooms left on site for the weekend so if you don’t have your tickets then you better get on that now. So first off here is a little comment from Sfw themselves with a little bad news…
First off, the bad news … As regular SFWers know, sometimes guests have to drop out, and since the last announcement, both Colin Baker...

Ken Park, a doctor pursuing a career in comedy, has been offered a great opportunity: A starring role in Dan Harmon’s new comedy about a group of misfits at a community college.
Park is a bit of a goofball, so ultimately Harmon writes the part of Señor Chang, an eccentric Spanish teacher, for the comedian. Sound familiar?
The Season 2 finale of Ken Jeong’s ABC sitcom “Dr. Ken” rips a page out of real life, sort of. “Community” creator Dan Harmon guest stars as, you guessed it, Dan Harmon (playing a particularly surly version of himself). Also appearing:
Alison Brie – who played Annie on the show, opposite Jeong’s Chang – and a few other familiar faces from the show, including recurring actors Erik Charles Nielsen (Garrett), Danielle Kaplowitz (Vicki), Richard Erdman (Leonard), and Luke Youngblood (Magnitude – pop pop!).
“The word ‘surreal’ was pervasive,” Jeong said of having Harmon on set.

The ballroom dance scene is perhaps the most iconic scene in “Beauty and the Beast.” To accomplish this and the other musical scenes in the live-action adaptation of one of Disney’s most famous animated features, director Bill Condon enlisted the help of choreographer Anthony Van Laast, whom he had worked with on the 2014 Broadway revival of “Side Show.” “I was very nervous because I knew what an iconic piece it was,” Van Laast told Dance Network. “I knew the film very well and I knew the musical very well, so the challenge was to try and look at it again and find a way of reinventing it.”

The last two days have seen the release of not one, not two, but two and a bit trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming, all featuring original footage. That's Happy Hogan! Looking a lot less worse for wear than he did in Iron Man 3. Jon Favreau is the man who kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe so it's good to see him still around. And hey, who doesn't love a little interconnectedness?

Have any of you ever seen Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan? I wouldn't be surprised if you hadn't. Even among Japanese films, it's not much talked about today, though it deserves to be. Kwaidan is a rarity in so many ways - an omnibus film made by one director, a truly artful horror film, a groundbreaking work of art. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film in 1965 (losing to the heartrending The Shop on Main Street from Czechoslovakia), and it's a bit hard to imagine it getting that far today, even with its arthouse bona fides like a Special Jury Prize at Cannes...

How I Feel / How I Wish I Felt as demonstrated by DeliveranceI seem to have done something to my shoulder* so typing has become painful. People are performing superhuman feats at the Olympics whilst looking sexy and I'm watching like a mangled corpse in my living room. Fun times. Alas, that means this week's Best Shot Special Edition focusing on both cinematography and a Best Costume choice (as tribute to Orry-Kelly with the release of the documentary "Women He Undressed") might be very late. I'm taking frequent long stretching breaks.

Reunion alert! Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley, a.k.a. Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright, reunited Thursday night, and it is everything. Harry Potter fans know that these two ultimately end up together in the series after several trials and tribulations (read: near-death experiences), and it looked like Wright returned the favor by supporting Radcliffe at his off-Broadway play, Privacy. Joining Wright was the director of the first two Harry Potter films, Chris Columbus, so it really was a miniature family reunion! Fortunately, Wright snapped a picture and shared it on Instagram where fans could freak out with excitement. "Reunion! Congrats Dan on another stellar performance," she captioned the picture....

This week's Hit Me With Your Best Shot was derailed by a very tough communal week and also a busy one for entirely different reasons for yours truly. But a few of our regular participants soldiered on. Please read their lovely pieces on this underappreciated Francis Ford Copoola curiousity from the early 80s. I think you can see a bit of it in the DNA of Moulin Rouge! if you need extra incentive to watch it on Amazon Prime.

After realizing that we'd never featured an Akira Kurosawa on Hit Me With Your Best Shot, we obviously had to. Ran (1985) was tempting but it gets a lot of attention already. So we opted to watch his other Shakespeare inspired masterpiece, Throne of Blood (1957) which is still the best Macbeth movie even if its more Macbeth-inspired than traditionally adapted.
If you've never seen it, give it a shot. It's gorgeous and haunting and unlike most Shakespeare films grippingly compact at only 110 minutes.

With the new riff on the ol' Ghostbusters property nearly upon us, what better time to look back at the original comedy smash? While the film's comic tone and dialogue are well remembered its visuals are less often discussed. The film was shot by the Hungarian cinematographer László Kovács. He logged a lot of quality time in the romantic comedy genre (What's Up Doc?, My Best Friend's Wedding, Say Anything...) but made his name in the 70s on scrappy, famous and/or ambitious pictures like Five Easy Pieces, Shampoo, New York New York, and Paper Moon.

Have you ever fallen in love at first sight? Not its more common sister, lust at first sight, but real, true, struck-by-cupid's-arrow L-o-v-e at first sight?
It is a rush. A breathless rush when everything around you seems to slow down and disappear until the only thing you can see, or even care about, is this other person. It will cloud your judgment, and perhaps impair your ability to speak, but all your senses become laser-focused on the object of your affections, this perfect being for whom you have fallen head over heels. It’s still astounding to me how an art form like comics can, on the one hand, celebrate the creative contributions of individuals while, on the other hand, leave behind a tragic history and rotten track record for its treatment of these creators. The debates on this topic continue to rage on. Recently the appropriate level of recognition for a particular creator, who has long since shuffled offstage, dominated the online comic conversation.
As part of an ongoing series exploring today’s creators’ reactions to their comic creations’ successful crossovers into other media, I caught up with Mike Allred, who along with Chris Roberson co-created Vertigo’s iZombie. It’s a hit series on the CW network and has been renewed for a second season. Fans of Allred have always been delighted with his rich body of work: his brilliantly independent Madman, his innovative, genre-busting X-Statix, and more recently, his...

Pre-credit sequence. Shirin is gone, but thanks to Mike, last week's Tribal had some amusement and it's time to see what the ripples are. Everybody's trying to figure out who voted for who, with Mike cackling all the way. The Six go off into the jungle to scramble, which Mike loves, even if he wasn't invited. He knows he's safe with his Idol, so The Six will have to cannibalize. Dan is ranting and raving about knowing it was a bluff, while Tyler is trying to lecture Dan on basic strategy. "It's fine," Dan says, putting his hand on Tyler's chest in a threatening manner. Clueless Will is trying to explain to Dan why he voted for him and Dan also reassures him, in a Low-Rent Godfather kinda way. "I don't have too many lifelines remaining," Tyler says, vowing to vote for Dan again if he needs to.

It's likely that Lindsey Cascaddan's "Survivor: Worlds Apart" run will be remembered for her disagreements with the men in her Blue Collar tribe, escalating frustrations that had her targeting first buffoonish Dan, then slave-driving Mike and finally boorish Rodney in three consecutive episodes. After interviewing the 24-year-old Florida hairdresser, I'm disappointed with didn't get to see more. Lindsey's read on her male tribemates is perceptive and nuanced in a way that Lindsey was never really given the chance to be on "Survivor." Instead, Lindsey was constantly on the defensive, fighting with the guys while simultaneously expressing great Blue Collar pride. And in her exit interview, even while lamenting the sexism she fought at the Blue Collar camp, Lindsey thinks there was a valuable lesson that she was able to convey through her experience, even if she wasn't able to stick around for very long. When Veep premiered in 2012, most people were surprised (and excited) to see child star, Anna Chlumsky, all grown up and cursing up a storm on HBO. Three seasons later, the 34-year-old actress has been twice nominated for an Emmy for her role as Amy Brookheimer, the determined and sometimes ruthless Chief of Staff to Vice President Selina Meyer.
Having already marked her territory in both film and TV, Chlumsky is taking on Broadway with her debut in You Can’t Take It with You, a slapstick play that has her testing her ability to keep a straight face.

Given that 3 Women is a different picture every time I lay eyes on it, I'm dying to see what other people see in it, too. Thus, this brilliantly strange atypical Robert Altman is an ideal film for Hit Me With Your Best Shot, wherein everyone is welcome to choose what they think of as the "best shot" from the pre-selected film. How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
I am Joel Barish.
Or I was while rewatching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I hadn't seen the film in about 8 years and it rushed at me which such full force it felt like the first time again... or at least like the most vivid Déjà Vu ever. The experience is disorienting in its speed (20 minutes in and you're already portal'ed into Being Joel Barrish, without quite realizing it) moving in performance (career best work from Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey and a pitch-perfect supporting cast) and fascinating in its premise, looping structure and mirrored ideas (Charlie Kauffman's ingenious screenplay justly won the Oscar). But it's in the realm of the visuals where Michel Gondry and Dp Ellen Kuras bring it all together with imagination, verve and an entirely bold and unusual use of light and focus.
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.

In this Fyc series series, our contributors are highlighting their favorite fringe contenders this awards season. Here's Dancin' Dan on The Conjuring...
Let's face it: The Academy doesn't, as a rule, like horror films. Even when they're done well. But James Wan's The Conjuring is one we hope they'll honor, especially in the below-the-line categories. The technical elements are all exceptionally well-done, but the production design in particular is damn near flawless. For starters, take a look at that Annabelle doll. Creepy, right? But also totally believable as a toy that a girl might have loved as a child in the 40s or 50s and kept with her as a young adult in the 60s.
The whole film is stuffed with smart design like that. Production Designer Julie Berghoff, Art Director Geoffrey S. Grimsman, and Set Decorator Sophie Neufdorfer built the Perron house used in the film from the...

Sons of Anarchy got off to a huge start and a controversial start this week, as "Straw" featured Jax cheating on Tara... Clay making a deal with Lee Toric... and a student shooting up a school.
Which moments were most memorable? Most shocking? Where might things go from here?
Round Table panelists Matt Richenthal, Dan Forcella, Christina Orlando and Lisa Warren (from Sons-of-Anarchy.net) are here to debate those topics and many more. Pull up a virtual chair and join them now!
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the premiere?
Matt: I'll go with Gemma and Nero visiting the latter's son. These two actually have a very sweet relationship. Granted, it involves guns (both of the toy and the real variety), gangs and call girls, but still. Very sweet.
Dan: My favorite scene from a mostly boring premiere was probably the flirting between Jax and Kim Dickens' character.

Time to find out who was crowned the winner of "Hell's Kitchen" Season 11, who will receive the head chef position at Gordan Ramsay Pub & Grill at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
The final 2 was made up of Mary Poehnelt and Ja'Nel Witt, after Jon Scallion was cut in the first few minutes of the finale. After the final dinner service, which featured four appetizers, four entrees and two desserts from each team, Ramsay declared Ja'Nel Witt the winner.
Witt won the final challenge before the final kitchen service, earning the points for her cold appetizer, fish entree and beef entree, compared to Mary's hot appetizer and chicken entree wins. Witt also seemed to be in command more of her kitchen in the final service, plus Mary was hindered a bit by wild card Dan on her team.
Do you think the right chef won "Hell's Kitchen"?...

Rylan Clark has denied claims that Big Brother is fixed after he appeared to reveal the results of a live show 20 minutes before it aired on TV.
The Bit On The Side host tweeted a picture from rehearsals on Monday (July 22) with an image on screens in the background showing Dan Neal, Sophie Lawrence and Sam Evans up for eviction.

Dan was only picked to enter the safe house by Sophie and Sam, and therefore put up for eviction, later on in the evening. This caused some fans to speculate whether the show was fixed or pre-recorded.
In response to the controversy, Clark tweeted: "In regards to last night's live show where I tweeted a pic in rehearsals showing Dan on screen: we rehearse all scenarios, mainly for me to be sure on what I'm saying.

"Who are you?" Another intriguing new science fiction short film to watch today, if you've got the time for something a bit more contemplative than the usual flashy sci-fi fare. This short is called Tonight I Strike, and features a couple of robot helpers while set in the near future but the story is actually about a brother caring for his young sister. Created by up-and-coming filmmaker Dan Gaud, the short has some excellent cinematography and solid indie acting, although some of the visual effects look a bit rough (except the bots). However, there's an emotional story at its core that shines through and makes this a worthy summer short. Tonight I Strike doesn't have a synopsis; available directly on Vimeo. Directed by Dan Gaud, written by Gaud & Ayz Waraich. The cinematography is by Kevin Rasmussen, and the music is by Casey 3Pm Clark. The cast includes Bass Stewart, Delilah Kates and Michael Coughlan.

As we finish our season three Game of Thrones coverage, there’s one last anecdote to share. Do you want to know what prompted HBO to turn George R.R. Martin’s novels into a TV show? It’s a story only a few people know.
There are many factors in any decision like this, of course, and the novels have a lot of obvious benefits — a gripping, constantly cliff-hanging story with a passionate built-in fan base, for starters. But HBO programming president Michael Lombardo can recall one specific moment when he decided to move forward with the pilot — a “tipping point,...

For this week's episode of Best Shot, the collective series in which bloggers are invited to choose their favorite image from a pre-selected movie, we went to Italy for David Lean's Summertime (1955) starring Katharine Hepburn. The film won both of them Oscar nominations, for Direction and Acting respectively, and since I'd never seen it it fills in two Oscar gaps in my 1950s cinema.
It's a relatively modest picture all told, concerned not with big sweeping travelogue beauty (though the travelogue beauty is accounted for) but with an internal flowering. Spinster Katharine Hepburn goes to Italy, goes a little wild (well, wild for an American spinster from Akron Ohio), and then -- spoiler alert -- leaves Italy again. It's all very E.M. Forster really! (See A Room With a View and Where Angels Fear to Tread).

My Amityville Horror is a documentary making the rounds on the VOD circuit, and is out in limited release around the country. You can find our review of the film here, but recently we had the opportunity to talk with director Eric Walter about the project.
Before we got started, Eric Walter made it clear that he was a huge Famous Monsters fan, that he’s been one ever since he was a kid, and his dad collected the magazine. Perhaps he still does. Now, he’s come full circle, talking with us about his first feature film, a documentary entitled My Amityville Horror, that delves into the infamous hauntings that took place at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY that tore the Lutz family apart and made them household names for decades, as the specter of what did or didn’t happen loomed over the rest of their lives, including one Daniel Lutz,...

What will happen to Johnny now that his secret allegiance is out?
Dan: He will be forgiven by Boyd, feel a bit too comfortable, and then meet his maker at the most unlikely moment.
Jim: He may be joining Devil, we saw how it worked out for Devil to try and double cross Boyd.
Christine: I'm with Dan on this one. Boyd will make him feel safe before taking him out ... or if he's smart he'll run, so to speak.

Dan: Had to be Raylan's second shootout in as many eps, but it was less about the actual fight and more about Boyd telling Raylan that he was still invited to the wedding.
Nick: I'm in agreement with Dan on this one; plus, I loved when Raylan stopped the tension midway by commenting on Ava's engagement ring.
Christine: I loved Boyd out of nowhere asking for a Dairy Queen and then Ava's quip that she'd love a Peanut Buster Parfait.

Hartford, Conn. (AP) — Jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck, whose pioneering style in pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms, has died. He was 91.
Brubeck died Wednesday morning at Norwalk Hospital of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd. Brubeck would have turned 92 on Thursday.
Brubeck had a career that spanned almost all American jazz since World War II. He formed The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 and was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine – on Nov. 8, 1954 – and he helped define the swinging, smoky rhythms of 1950s and `60s club jazz.
The seminal album "Time Out," released by the quartet in 1959, was the first ever million-selling jazz LP, and is still among the best-selling jazz albums of all time. It opens with "Blue...

The man, often hailed as the greatest screen actor of his generation, is famous – some say notorious – for his obsessive attention to detail in building character. His latest role, playing Abraham Lincoln, is no exception
Thick mud and blood mingle in the opening scenes of Steven Spielberg's latest film, Lincoln. In a brutal demonstration of what happens when politics fails, bodies pile up across a boggy battlefield. The rest of the film, also full of dark and muddy tones, looks steadily at how politicians might end or prolong such a grim civil war. And at the heart of the matter, trying to abolish slavery and adorned with a representation of one of the most famous beards of all time, stands Daniel Day-Lewis.
In playing the revered 16th president of the United States, the 55-year old actor adds to the series of New World archetypes he has tackled on screen.

Dark Crawler is an enjoyable albeit not wholly essential listen from one of grime’s godfather’s. It’s also only the second full-length album Danjah has released, not just for the Hyperdub record label but over his more than decade long stint as de facto veteran grime producer. The rough and tumble of Dark Crawler’s synths, sub-bass and drums sometimes belie their complex construction, but nonetheless this is as thrillingly physical as electronic music gets without sounding lobotomised.
Album opener ‘‘Dark Crawler Intro’’ lulls you in with mischievous laughter and light musical narration that wouldn’t be out of place in an old Looney Tunes animation, only to pummel you the next moment with a surge of grimy orchestral stabs. ‘‘Mirrors Edge’’ begins with a ruminative piano score before squelching into life with the kind of bass lurch that usually gets frowned upon by...

Is there hope that Dan and Serena, one of the core couples of Gossip Girl Season 1 and 2, could be together once again by the end of the coming sixth and final season of the CW series this fall?
It's all very unclear, but consider this:
We've already seen pictures of them on a motorcycle, which conjured up images of their first date, and TV Line reports today that the producers are planning a callback to Season 2's epic episode “The Dark Night.”
We can expect to find Dan and Serena trapped in an elevator together again. In "The Dark Night," they parted ways after the doors opened (below). Will an elevator bring them back together in Season 6?

I won't be writing reviews of every new fall show, but I did at least discuss "Guys with Kids" with Dan on today's podcast. We were not fans. For those of you who watched, what did you think? Were you happy to see Vanessa Huxtable back in an NBC family sitcom? Meadow Soprano doing lighter material? Cliff from "Bring It On" being all grown up? Anthony Anderson trying his hardest to earn the paycheck? More importantly, do you find the idea of men having to take care of their own children as absolutely hi-larious as the "Guys with Kids" writers so obviously do? And will you watch again? Have at it.

Dan and Serena may not be together together ... but they will be sharing scenes again before long.
There's a lot up in the air heading into Gossip Girl Season 6, including the status of Derena - be it as friends or more than friends. Do you want to see them get together again? We know S is getting a new love interest this fall as well, so any romantic rekindling would likely come toward the end of the series, if at all.
Take a look at this recent photo from the set of Gossip Girl and tell us what you think they're up to:
