There are greenshoots of recovery sprouting in the UK exhibitor sector, said distributors and exhibitors on the first day of the annual UK Cinema Association (Ukca) conference on March 5.
This is despite a light-looking release schedule thus far in 2024.
The 400-strong attendance included representatives ranging from nationwide chains such as Everyman, Picturehouse, Vue, Cineworld and Odeon, to independents such as the Strand Arts Centre in Belfast and the Exeter Phoenix, as well as distributors including Disney, Altitude, We Are Parable and Warner Bros, plus TikTok.

At a cinema in London’s central Leicester Square, an area home to frequent star-studded premieres, extra screens have been hastily added to the opening week’s schedule to cope with demand. A few hours’ drive away in the city of Bristol, a former Imax screen — the biggest in the region — has been booked, as has a red carpet and a troupe of Irish dancers.
The movie getting this extra special treatment ahead of its Sept. 2 release isn’t the latest Marvel outing. Nor is it the next prestige drama from a buzzy director starring an ensemble of A-listers.
It’s far from it — a four-year-old cult film from a first-time filmmaker better known for throwing his oiled-up torso across stages around the world. And it’s a film whose cult status has been attained, rather uniquely, without anybody having seen it.

U.K. cinemas remain shuttered due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and while some of the large chains with deep pockets have the wherewithal to ride out the crisis, independent cinemas are suffering. Some U.K. distributors have come up with solutions to remedy this.
Modern Films was due to release Haifaa Al-Mansour’s festival favorite “The Perfect Candidate” theatrically on March 27, but instead released it online on Curzon Home Cinema, the BFI Player and its own website. Customers choosing to rent the film via Modern’s website will see a drop-down menu at the purchase point that allows them to select and support a cinema of their choice. Part of the proceeds will go directly back to the cinema.
Similarly, 606 Distribution, which has released Nora Fingscheidt’s Berlin winner “System Crasher” online via Vimeo, gives renters the option to select a cinema of their choice who will receive 10% of the after-tax profit.

It’s no secret that one of our favourite places in the world to enjoy movies is the Prince Charles Cinema in the heart of London.
One of the many reasons we love them is their tireless efforts to screen long-lost classics and cult favourites and we’ve got word that their new REintroducing season kicks off next month with a very special screening of Fred Dekker’s 1987 movie The Monster Squad.
This film hasn’t enjoyed the nostalgic renaissance of other 80s classics but the hard work of the people at the Prince Charles have got the rights and the print and are letting us reap the benefits of their labour with a screening on Friday the 18th of November.
It’s a great film and one which, thankfully, holds up today and there’s no better place to see it.
Prices and details are in the press release below.
