As Indians we have always been proud of how our ancestors were way ahead of their times, giving the world some revolutionary concepts and inventions. So ‘Aryabhatta gave the world the number 0’ is often our trademark reply to India being called a backward and third world country in almost any movie. Taking this a bit further is Vibhu Puri’s Hawaizaada based on a theory that an Indian was the first to build an airplane before the Wright brothers did.

Take any day in your life that you wish you had a helping hand. A day you may have forgotten your wallet, when you needed to pay for your bus ticket. A day your car broke down, when you had to go to an interview. What if a stranger gave you that helping hand? No questions asked and in return, didn’t ask for money or a favour. Just that you help another when the chance came to you. Would you? Jai Ho shows us how a common man that left his army life, takes on the fight to help humanity, and for a bit of masala, bashes a few bad guys along the way.

Where do you begin with a film like Chillar Party? Backed by Salman Khan Being Human Productions and Utv Motion Pictures, the film first caught the eyes of the audience with some excellent promos that tickled the funny bone and also left us curious. Adding to that was the appearance of Salman Khan, not only as the narrator, but for the first time, under the producer title as well. With a fresh batch of child artists, Amit Trivedi for chaddi clad booty-shaking tracks and the hyped item number by Ranbir Kapoor, Chillar Party had enough to get a decent initial start but did it have enough to bring in more than just chillar. Yes and no.
First, we begin with introductions of the group. Jhangya (Naman Jain), Encyclopedia (Sarath Menon), Akram (Rohan Grover), Panauti (Chinmai Chandranshuh), Aflatoon (Aarav Khanna), Second Hand (Vishesh Tiwari), Silencer (Vedant Desai), and Shaolin (Divij Handa...

Chillar Party is a party of an interesting assortment of kids with equally interesting nick names like Shaolin, Silencer, Panauti and Encyclopedia in a housing society in Mumbai. This group of children takes on a local neta Bhide who is on a mission to build a ‘bhay-mukta Mumbai’ (fearless Mumbai) by chasing all stray dogs out of the boundaries of the city. On his target happens to be Bhidu, the favourite pet of the Chillar Party, and a harmless stray animal. So there is a Bhide versus Bhidu in the film and who emerges victorious is anyone’s guess.
The problem of the film lies in its first half; the debutant directors have pretty much spent half the film trying to establish the story. There are gangs of colony kids,...
