Lauren Miller Rogen had big plans in 2012. Her first feature, “For a Good Time, Call…,” written alongside her college roommate Katie Anne Naylon and loosely based on the pair’s own adventures, debuted at Sundance and was subsequently bought by Focus Features for a summer release, establishing her as a major talent to watch. She was ready to move onto the next stage of her career and direct a feature.
Then, life got in the way: Her mother had just been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, and the disease was advanced enough that Miller Rogen and her husband, fellow actor and filmmaker Seth Rogen, moved her parents to Los Angeles to be closer. Two weeks later, Miller Rogen left for the press tour for “For a Good Time, Call…” It was an understandably “emotional time” for her, she said in a recent interview. Directed by Jamie Travis
Written by Katie Anne Naylon and Lauren Anne Miller
U.S.A., 2012
When looking back at the past 10, maybe even 15 years in cinema, particularly American and English-language cinema, sex has become a hot topic ripe for comedy. Not that comedies in decades past played not role in movie comedies, but it is really only in cinema’s recent history that screenwriters and directors have really embraced the full extent to which all things that happen ‘in the sack’ can be conducive to big laughs. The sexual content in said films has always presented as something the characters, male or female (although typically the former) want to obtain by any means necessary. If 2012 is any indication, the nature of the sex comedy may be finding a different course to navigate, such as with the Jamie Travis directed comedy, For a Good Time,...

For a Good Time, Call…
Directed by Jamie Travis
Written by Katie Anne Naylon & Lauren Anne Miller
USA, 2012
For a Good Time, Call… starts out cute, in the way that you might find watching children playing a dress-up sketch for adults at a holiday party cute. Eventually, this winking romantic comedy about two unlikely best friends running a phone-sex operation becomes cute in a more adult way; nevertheless, it always remains a pleasant trifle. There’s something quaint about the idea of phone sex being a hot business in 2012. The notion that people are so desperate to get off but can’t get what they’re looking for online may be a stretch, but For a Good Time, Call… pulls off the concept fairly well. The film’s most notable for one of its leads, Ari Graynor, having a star-making moment, giddily stealing the film from under her fellow actors’ noses.

The reserved Lauren (played by Lauren Anne Miller) and the irrepressible Katie (Ari Graynor) are polar opposites… and past enemies. But when both come up short on the funds needed to afford their dream New York City apartment a mutual friend (Justin Long) re-introduces them and they reluctantly agree to room together. These apartment-mates have nothing in common – until Lauren discovers that Katie is working as a phone-sex operator, and recognizes a good business opportunity. But as their business partnership takes off, their newfound friendship finds unexpected challenges that may leave them both, as they say, hanging on the telephone.

Starring Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller, who also co-wrote the film with Katie Anne Naylon, For a Good Time Call… is a new comedy from director Jamie Travis (making his directorial debut) which tells the story of enemies Katie and Lauren who, on the edge of homelessness, start up their own sexy phone chatline.
About to be homeless in New York City, enemies Katie and Lauren concede to living together. At first it’s war – Lauren’s hair dangles on the bathroom soap and Katie’s orgasms can be heard from down the hall. But when the girls team up to start their own dirty hotline, a genuine friendship is forged through fake orgasms. Before they know it, Katie is training Lauren how to moan like a pro, lie about what underwear she’s actually wearing and admit that she’ll lick anything. Through a romance with a caller and Lauren’s phone-sexual awakening,...

[Our thanks to James Wallace for this interview.] After winning over audiences with its blend of saucy comedy and sweet emotion at this year's Sundance Film Festival, For A Good Time, Call... hits theaters this weekend in select cities with a wider release in September. While you might think that a tale about two girls with a love/hate relationship who decide to own and operate a phone sex line is something that came from someone's hilarious head, you might be surprised to find out that it's a case of art imitating life. I sat down with writer/star Lauren Miller and co-star Ari Graynor (whose character is modeled after co-writer Katie Anne Naylon) to discuss their real life research, making a grounded relatable romcom about...

Sex complicates relationships. Sex talk complicates friendships. In Jamie Travis‘ For A Good Time, Call…, a pair of mismatched gal pals attempt to navigate the murky waters of sex line proprietorship while also exploring what it means to be a loyal and true friend. That may sound cheesy, but that’s okay, because For A Good Time, Call… is cheesy, and in the best possible way. It’s also dirty, smutty, raunchy, silly, charming, funny, heartfelt, honest, sexy, and did we mention dirty, smutty, and raunchy? It’s a movie about a sex line. It has to be. But it doesn’t have to be this charming. We open with good girl Lauren Powell (Lauren Miller, who also wrote the film’s script with Katie Anne Naylon), bored, bra-ed, and in bed with her boyfriend, mid-coitus. This is not a relationship built on passion, and when Lauren’s boyfriend, Charlie (James Wolk) finally lays it on her...

Every now and then you are surprised by how deftly a film can balance between two different themes or elements. The fact that For A Good Time, Call… can be both sweet and raunchy at the same time is a testament to co-writers Lauren Anne Miller and Katie Anne Naylon along with feature debut director Jamie Travis.
But the film really succeeds by presenting two women in Lauren and Ari Graynor that, despite their bickering, you end up rooting on to become friends (that’s the sweet part). The raunchy part is filled in by the backdrop of them running a phone sex line out of their apartment in New York as Lauren breaks out of her shell. A few weeks ago I was able to sit down with Miller and Graynor to talk about finding that balance, the soundboard featured in the film, catching audiences off guard, a bejeweled dildo named Susan,...

In select theaters today, For a Good Time, Call . . . stars Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller as two roommates who run a phone sex line. We recently chatted with Lauren - who also cowrote the screenplay - and Ari about their sweet and sexy flick, which is actually based loosely on cowriter Katie Anne Naylon's real-life experiences as a phone sex operator in college! (Check out our interview with Katie here.) Lauren and Ari shared their own roommate horror stories, how they researched the business of phone sex, and what it was like to be a part of this new wave of raunchy female comedies. Plus, Lauren dished on the effect this sexy role had on her relationship with hubby Seth Rogen, who has a cameo in the film. Watch our interview now!

When Lauren Anne Miller and Katie Anne Naylon sat down to write what would become "For A Good Time Call...," they had one specific goal.
"We wanted to make a movie that we wanted to see," Miller, who co-wrote, co-produced and co-stars in the film, told HuffPost Entertainment. "As a young filmmaker, just starting out, that's an important way to go. It's smart to do that. If I was going to write a movie about aliens taking over the world? I don't know about that."
What Miller and Naylon do know about is female friendship. And phone sex. After becoming friends in college, Naylon revealed to Miller that she worked as a phone sex operator.
"She came into my room clutching her pink fliers, and she was like, 'I have to tell you about something I did last year,'" Miller recalled. "She told me the whole story. That was her moment.

Chicago – Rising above the usual romantic comedy dreck is an admirable achievement in today’s film landscape. “For a Good Time, Call…” is not only funny and unconventional, but focuses on the relationship between the two lead woman characters, portrayed by Lauren Miller and Ari Graynor.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The approach of two twentysomething career women focusing their efforts on running a phone sex service is funny in itself. What is surprising is the film generally stays away from the low common denominator element envisioned in such a premise. The calls are used as high comedy and farce – with several familiar cameos thrown in – and the movie stakes a claim for the friendship of women. The two lead characters are basically fighting their loneliness and find a grateful fellow traveler in each other. Add a kind of glitzy patina to the proceedings – courtesy of debut director Jamie Travis – and the final product...

If you’ve seen the previews for this film, you already know what it’s about. I had the advantage of not knowing anything when I saw it a few weeks ago, which made it all the more enjoyable. What seems to be a raunchy movie (at least from its language) turns out to be a smart, saucy girl-powered story about friendship, written by one of its stars, Lauren Anne Miller, and Katie Anne Naylon. It also provides Miller and her costar, the underrated Ari Graynor, with a great vehicle. The premise is simple: two New Yorkers who have a bad memory of a college encounter ten years ago are forced to share an apartment, for strictly economic reasons. Miller has her sights set on a...

The new comedy For a Good Time, Call... brings together a whole bunch of my favorite elements: raunchy women (played by Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist standout Ari Graynor and the movie's own co-screenwriter Lauren Miller), plenty of dildo jokes, the joys of phone sex, a hilarious gay pal (played by Justin Long), and a loving friendship. Oh, and Seth Rogen (Miller's husband) appears in a cameo role as a horny pilot. That should seal it for you.

Who says buddy comedies are only for guys?
The new flick "For a Good Time Call" follows two girls, Lauren and Katie, who hate each other but begrudgingly become roomies in a fabulous Gramercy Park apartment in New York. Uptight Lauren, played by co-writer Lauren Miller, is aghast when she discovers that Katie (Ari Graynor, "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist") works for a phone sex line.
As unemployed Lauren becomes desperate for money, she suggests that she and Katie launch their own phone sex line in order to reap more of the profits from Katie's hard work. With that, 1-800-mmm-hmmm is born, and hilarious antics ensue.
Along the way, the two women eventually stop hating each other. "It's really about these two girls getting over themselves and becoming friends," says Katie Anne Naylon, who co-wrote the script with Miller.

Chicago – The snappy new comedy “For a Good Time, Call…” is the first film of screenwriter Katie Anne Naylon and the feature debut of director Jamie Travis. It’s combines phone sex operators with friendship, and stars Lauren Miller and Ari Graynor.
The focus in this energetic farce is on the absurdities of the phone sex trade, and how two different personalities make it work as a business. Katie Anne Naylon is the co-screenwriter (with Lauren Miller), and began her career as a freelance writer specializing in personal essays, including her work in the phone sex trade. Jamie Travis specialized in short films before directing this feature debut, having won acclaim at Sundance and the Toronto Film Festival for his experimental filmmaking.

Although Ari Graynor got her start more than a decade ago in heavier dramatic roles in "The Sopranos" and "Mystic River," more recently the 29-year-old actress has been tickling our funny bones. She played Caroline, Norah's alcoholic best friend, in "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" and improvised an entire scene at a bus station where her character talks to a stranger.
Now Graynor stars in the raunchy-sweet R-rated comedy "For a Good Time, Call…," in which her free-spirited Katie reluctantly agrees to share rent with Lauren (Lauren Anne Miller), a girl she fell out with minutes after meeting in college years ago. Lauren discovers that Katie makes good money as a phone-sex operator and soon the odd couple bonds over building a successful business together.

Hitting theaters this Friday, Focus Features' For a Good Time, Call... is an original R-rated comedy from screenwriters Lauren Anne Miller and Katie Anne Naylon. Former college roommates and close friends, the pair based the project loosely on their own lives and Naylon's brief time spent working at a phone sex line at Florida State University. Miller stars as Lauren Powell, her own fictionalized alter-ego, who is decidedly on the reserved side. Ari Graynor, meanwhile, plays the outgoing, loud-spoken Katie Steele. Though an initial meeting puts them off to a bad start, various financial hardships wind up forcing them to become roommates. That's when Lauren learns about Katie's job working for a phone sex line and, with the contribution of Lauren's management skills, the two soon...

Love and friendship are on the line in this trailer For A Good Time, Call., directed by Jamie Travis from an original screenplay by Katie Anne Naylon & Lauren Anne Miller. The contemporary comedy world-premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, lifting audiences to their feet and lifting their spirits. Ms. Miller stars in the movie opposite Ari Graynor (.The Sitter,. .Nick & Norah.s Infinite Playlist.).
In case you missed it, have a gander at the red-band trailer.
Two young women come up short on the funds needed to live in New York City. Lauren Powell (played by Ms. Miller), a reserved overachiever, is suddenly on her own after boyfriend Charlie (James Wolk) abruptly breaks up with her. Katie Steele (Ms. Graynor), an irrepressible free spirit, is about to forfeit a dream residence unless she finds an apartment-mate. If you think that "The Five-Year Engagement" and this weekend's tedious "That's My Boy" is all the comedy summer has to offer in 2012, there's one more film that hopes to make you laugh before the season is over.
Focus Features has released a new red band trailer for the Sundance comedy “For A Good Time Call...” The film, co-written by Lauren Miller (who also stars) and Katie Anne Naylon, is about former college frenemies Lauren and Katie who move into a fabulous Gramercy Park apartment and, in order to make ends meet, start a phone sex line together. The trailer, despite showcasing what seems like the entire plot of the film, appears to be holding back a lot of the more raunchier humor that the premise would suggest.
The movie, which also co-stars Justin Long and the underrated Ari Graynor, looks like it’ll be another charming and fun addition to the comedic landscape.

Starring Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller in the leads, For A Good Time, Call… is sure to be one of the summer’s funniest R-rated comedies.
With support from Justin Long and the ever-brilliant Seth Rogen (who, incidentally, is married to Miller – so this could be largely a cameo from him), Yahoo Movies have debuted the film’s first red-band trailer and poster – so if you’re reading this at work, you’re definitely going to want to avoid watching this now and coming back later.

One thing that I love about the Sundance Film Festival taking place in January is that for the rest of the year you get to sit and wait in anticipation for the best films of the festival to find their way into theaters. This year, one of those titles is the comedy For A Good Time, Call... Directed by Jamie Travis and written by Katie Anne Naylon and Lauren Miller, the film is about two women who don't really like each other but are forced to share an apartment together due to financial issues. When one discovers that the other makes a good living as a phone sex operator, the two hatch a scheme and create a business that could end all of their money woes. The film got a lot of positive buzz out of Sundance (you can read Katey's review of it here) and now it has a...

Get out your marker and dry erase board of upcoming movies, because you'll have to add a few more dates to the calendar.
First up, despite Vulture's suggestion that Disney was trying to offload the DreamWorks drama (they have a distribution arrangement), "Welcome To People," from tentpole writers and producers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, it is now slated with a June 29th release date. The film stars Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Jon Favreau, Mark Duplass and Michelle Pffeifer and tells the story a twenty-something business man who, after the death of his father, must deliver $150,000 in cash to the alcoholic sister he didn’t know he had, and her son, a 12-year-old with major anger management issues. So yeah, definitely counter-programming in the midst of the summer. No word yet on the exact release plans (limited or wide) but we presume this means a trailer and more is just around the corner.

Why He's On Our Radar: After directing a series of darkly comic shorts (including 2010's "The Armoire," which screened at Sundance), Jamie Travis is making his feature debut with "For a Good Time, Call..." Already picked up by Focus Features, the raunchy comedy has attracted much buzz since debuting this past weekend. Written by Katie Anne Naylon and Lauren Anne Miller (who also stars), the film follows two former frenemies who bond when they start doing business together via a phone sex line. What's Next: "I think that my next project will probably another film I have not written myself," he said. "I am writing right now, but I think I'm more of a director than a writer. I feel like I can only write a film every five years or something. And I know eventually I will. I just don't want to push something out there that's not ready.

Five minutes into the Sundance comedy "For a Good Time, Call..." I was cringing. My notes read like this: "Wow. This is... broad." "Geez. Really broad." "Neither leading lady introduced with any subtlety." "Guess we're not downplaying the coarseness, eh?" [Yes. My notes are often designed to be read with a slight Canadian accent.] It was not an encouraging start for the Us Dramatic competition entry from director Jamie Travis and writers Lauren Anne Miller and Katie Anne Naylon. Then a funny thing started happening. Or, more literally, funny things started happening. "For...

As many of you know, the Sundance Film Festival is well underway, and there’s been no shortage of studios acquiring some buzzed-about independent titles. As the fest winds into its last few days, the deals are getting done. First up is Focus Features snagging “For a Good Time, Call…,” which unfortunately isn’t a movie based on the Tommy Tune song “867-5309/Jenny,” but rather a feisty little comedy about two women who start up a phone sex hotline. So it’s really not that far of a stretch from that little slice of ‘80s nostalgia. The art house label of Universal Pictures acquired the pic for somewhere between $2-3 million. Directed by Jamie Travis, the film was written by Katie Anne Naylon and Lauren Anne Miller, who also stars alongside actress Ari Graynor in the feature. Focus has had a decent track record over the past few years,...

[1] For A Good Time Call... is one of the big buzz films of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Today Focus Features acquired worldwide rights to the comedy for a reported $2+ million. The film tells the story of two women who start a phone sex line. Two young women, short on the funds needed to live in New York City, agree to room together. But they’re an at-odds couple; Lauren (played by Lauren Anne Miller) is reserved, while Katie (Ari Graynor of The Sitter) is irrepressible. These roommates have nothing in common – until Lauren discovers that Katie is working as a phone-sex operator, and recognizes a good business opportunity. As the money begins to roll in, the two realize the value of not just their booming partnership but their growing friendship. The film is co-written and co-produced by Lauren Anne Miller, who also stars. (In real life, she is married to Seth Rogen.

Chicago – The Sundance film festival has been in full swing for the better part of the last week, and word keeps coming in about films that have been picked up for distribution by studios. The newest add to the list is the contemporary comedy “For a Good Time, Call…,” which was picked up by Focus Features.

Early this morning reports surfaced that the female-driven comedy "For A Good Time, Call…" was bought by Focus Features. First-time feature director Jamie Travis has confirmed the sale via Twitter: “Sold to Focus Features! The best place for our film,” he typed through his @JamieTravis handle. The movie follows college “frenemies” Lauren and Katie who move in together and form a bond after Lauren discovers Katie's dirty secret and decide to launch an unconventional business venture. Katie Anne Naylon and Lauren Anne Miller star. Focus took worldwide rights for a reported $2 million. The deal was put together by Cinetic and Studio City Partners.

Update: Focus Features has made the deal official. The release is under Deadline’s scoop. Exclusive: I’m hearing that Focus Features has closed an acquisition of For A Good Time, Call… in a deal that is a shade over $2 million for worldwide rights. The Jamie Travis-directed comedy was scripted by Katie Anne Naylon & Lauren Anne Miller. The ensemble cast includes Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, Miller, Justin Long, Mark Webber, James Wolk, Mimi Rogers, and Nia Vardalos. The logline: Lauren (Miller) and Katie (Graynor) move in together after a loss of a relationship and a loss of a rent-controlled home, respectively. When Lauren learns what Katie does for a living — she runs a phone sex business — the two enter into a wildly unconventional business venture. Cinetic and Studio City Partners have been juggling offers since the film premiered Sunday night at the Eccles Theater. The reaction I heard is...

Sunday was a painfully beautiful day for a hung-over walk in Park City. Set in a bed of flawless blue, the sun refracted joyfully off slopes washed white by fresh snowfall and volunteers in neon safety vests, shoveling out paths for fest goers. Thankfully, the quality of the scotch I'd downed at last night's Save The Date party made the hangover more sufferable than your garden variety lager-derived nausea. It was a good thing because I was determined not to miss this morning's screening of Arbitrage at the Eccles, one of the festival's gold-plated marquee titles. Although Sundance projects an ethos of half-bearded hipsters and diffident indie chicks, behind the friendly volunteers and plebian shuttle system lies a firm foundation of money and privilege. Occasionally, that aura of aristocracy wafts down from the ski slopes, and it certainly suffused the Eccles auditorium when Arbitrage screened. As filmmakers struggle to craft...

For a good time, check out the Sundance Film Festival release of "For A Good Time, Call…," the new comedy from co-writers Lauren Miller and Katie Anne Naylon. Miller stars in director Jamie Travis' feature as a woman forced to move in with her worst enemy from college, Katie (Ari Graynor), when her personal life falls into a rut. The two find some very unexpected common ground in the form of a telecommuting gig that has a lot more to do with moaning than talking.
The movie premiered to big laughs and high praise at Sundance on Sunday (January 22), and to keep the "Good" momentum going, we've got an exclusive clip for your viewing pleasure!
The clip features Lauren giving Katie a master class in "rape prevention." We won't spoil the whole thing for you, but here's one tip: if you don't have any mace handy, a huge-ass bottle...

Just about every film at Sundance is a world premiere. So why is there a "Premieres" section, and how is it different than the Competition or the Spotlight or the New Frontiers or the Next or...okay, I think that's all of them. Sundance describes Premieres as "a showcase of some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year from new and established directors" and Documentary Premieres as "about big subjects or by master filmmakers that showcase the power of the form."
Basically, what it really means is here's where you find the attention-grabbers at Sundance. These are the big honking movies, the movies featuring Hollywood directors and talent coming down from their Valhalla of craft services and video village to get their hands dirty with the independents. These are the movies that have the biggest red carpets and the majority of the press coverage (see this post).

The Sundance Film Festival (apart from Venice) remains the only major film festival that we have not yet had a chance to fully cover. Hopefully 2012 will change that situation. It is one of our goals for next year and so you should be seeing a lot of Sundance posts for the next two or so months.
Sundance has just announced their Feature and Documentary Premieres for next months line-up and it of course includes notable stand-outs including Spike Lee‘s latest Red Hook Summer, Stephen Frears‘ Lay the Favourite, Josh Radnor‘s sophomore effort, Liberal Arts with Elizabeth Olson and Joe Berlinger‘s latest documentary on Paul Simon. In other words, if you are lucky enough to attend the festival, now is the time to get even more excited.
