For anyone wondering whether that was the real Bob Dylan who called into John Mulaney’s Netflix talk show last night: It wasn’t.
Tuesday night marked the third of six installments for Everybody’s in L.A., Mulaney’s very live, very loose, late-night-esque show. One of the standout elements of the format so far is when Mulaney takes viewer phone calls. Anything can happen on those calls, but last night yielded a most unexpected guest.
Sounding off on the episode’s call-in topic of helicopters, a twangy-voiced “Bob in Malibu” complained, “They spook my horses.”
“Bob, what’s your full name?” Mulaney eventually asked.
“Bob Dylan. I’m a recording artist for Columbia,” the caller replied.
No, that wasn't the real Bob Dylan who called into #everybodysinLA with @Mulaney last night. It was SNL's James Austin Johnson (aka @shrimpJAJ). Full story: https://t.co/jIDACSW2fD pic.

Recording artist Dua Lipa just released her latest album this past week, so there's no better time for the pop star to pull double duty as the host and musical guest of "Saturday Night Live." Of course, her first time taking on the honor unfortunately comes after Ryan Gosling hosted a banger of an episode, packed with viral gems like the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch. But if your expectations were firmly in check, then you probably enjoyed this lukewarm, fairly amusing but not raucously hilarious episode of "SNL."
Thankfully, Dua Lipa turned out to be a solid host alongside her musical guest duties. She was game to jump into a variety of characters, didn't severely derail any sketches with subpar performances, and she was even willing to make jokes at her own expense during the monologue. However, the sketches were not exactly of the highest quality, and though Dua Lipa did her best,...

The entertainer previously served as the musical guest to Natalie Portman in 2018 and to Kristen Wiig in 2020, but this will be her first time as the host. In her “SNL” promo video (watch above), Dua teaches cast member Chloe Fineman how to be more like her so that Fineman can “do the performance” for her.
The regular cast members for “Saturday Night Live” Season 49 are, in credits order: Michael Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, James Austin Johnson, Punkie Johnson, Colin Jost, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang. The featured players are: Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow, Chloe Troast and Devon Walker. In a move of solidarity, none of the cast members from last year’s strike-truncated 48th cycle have departed.

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter’s updating guide to season 49’s SNL hosts and musical guests.

It's always a thrill when a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member comes back to Studio 8H to host the late night sketch comedy show. That's especially true when it's a cast member as beloved as Kristen Wiig. That last time the "Bridesmaids" star hosted "SNL" was in December 2020, and it just so happens the best sketch of the night was a new holiday favorite where she plays a mother who gets a robe for Christmas while the rest of the family gets a plethora of better gifts. However, since Kristen Wiig was hosting "SNL" for a fifth time this past weekend, she got a different robe. And she wasn't the only one.
While it's become customary for newly inducted Five Timers Club hosts to get monologue bits that bring back some legendary hosts like Steve Martin and Tom Hanks, it's not always logistically possible to make it a star-studded affair.

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Saturday Night Live took a break from politics in its cold open to riff on March Madness — more specifically how the women’s tournament has been a lot more exciting than the men’s competition.

Fellow host Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) chimed in, “The women’s is turning up the stars. Caitlin Clark is going as for State Farm, Subway, XFinity and Nike. I’m only doing ads for three of those companies.”
Later, the anchors go to Lsu coach Kim Mulkey (Heidi Gardner), who says she’s been made up to look “like the Riddler with the Talbots.”

The “SNL” 5-Timers Club has been around since December 1990, when Tom Hanks joked in his monologue that a person’s fifth time hosting is when they receive a membership card into the club. Hanks then left the stage and joined Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon in an expensive-looking set with hors d’oeuvres, waiters and a doorman. The iconic club set would be seen multiple times on NBC’s late sketch comedy throughout the decades, often (but not always) when a new host is anointed as a five-timer. Members of the club are always seen wearing exclusive jackets embroidered with a “5” badge.

This weekend’s Saturday Night Live opened the show with a sketch of Donald Trump (played by James Austin Johnson) selling Bibles.
The joke is based on Trump’s “God Bless The USA” Bible endorsement, which he posted about on Truth Social last week. He also endorsed this Bible in the biography on his Instagram page.
The $60 Bibles include the U.S. Constitution, the Pledge of Allegiance and the words of the Miranda Rights.
Johnson’s Trump proclaimed, “That’s right, it’s Easter. The time of year when I compare myself to Jesus Christ. That’s just the thing I do now, and people seem to be okay with it. I’m going to keep doing it. If you think that this is a bad look, imagine how weird it would be if I started selling Bibles. Well, I’m selling Bibles.”

Ramy Youssef may not be a household name, but his self-titled comedy series "Ramy" on Hulu landed him Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, not to mention a Peabody Award in 2020. So, he's got the right amount of experience and accolades to be called up to host "Saturday Night Live." Furthermore, Youssef is an established stand-up comedian, joining the likes of Nate Bargatze and Shane Gillis as hosts this season. But how did he handle the live sketch comedy of "SNL" in his hosting debut?
Well, Ramy Youssef doesn't seem to have much versatility when it comes to providing a variety of characters, and "SNL" leaned back on familiar formulas like talk shows and game shows, though they still delivered some hearty laughs. Tonight on SNL, Ramy Youssef appeared in a sketch parodying NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts series.
After singing a line from a song, alongside band mates played by Chloe Troast and James Austin Johnson, he tells a crowd assembled for the performance, “Thank you so much NPR. We are the Jonah Hughes Band. Now, that last one usually contains a lot more synth, but since this is a Tiny Desk concert, we’ve got to be quirking it up.”
“Yep,” says Troast. “That’s why I play a milk carton shaker.”
Youssef explains that Troast is usually on the cello, adding, “We’ve never actually played in an office before, like a real one, but being here is a dream come true.”
Before segueing into the band’s next song, “Crazy Girl, Amanda,” Youssef is interrupted by Bowen Yang, playing an NPR staffer.
“Hey, guys. Can we be quiet please?...

On Easter eve, Saturday Night Live opened with Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) hawking his latest product: a $60 Bible which includes not only the Constitution and the Pledge of Allegiance, but Miranda rights.
“As you know, I love Bible,” Johnson’s character explains, unconvincingly. “It’s my favorite book. I’ve definitely read it. My favorite part is probably the ending.”
(In 2020, then-President Trump held up an upside-down Bible during a blatant photo-op outside the White House, where protesters had just been tear gassed.)

Saturday Night Live went with Donald Trump’s hawking of Bibles for its cold open, with James Austin Johnson returning as the former president to make the pitch.
It was another case of the show trying to satirize something that hardly needs rewriting.
“That’s right, it’s Easter. The time of year when I compare myself to Jesus Christ,” Johnson as Trump said. “That’s just the thing I do now, and people seem to be Ok with it. I’m going to keep doing it. If you think that this is a bad look, imagine how weird it would be if I started selling Bibles. Well, I’m selling Bibles.”
“Sounds like a joke, and in many ways it is, but it’s also very real. As you know, I love Bible. It’s my favorite look.”

Saturday Night Live cast member James Austin Johnson, best known for his impersonation of Donald Trump, has snagged his first live-action movie role since joining NBC’s sketch series in 2021.
Johnson has been cast in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown from director James Mangold, according to Deadline.
Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, and Monica Barbaro co-star in the film, which is set within the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s. Chalamet plays Dylan from the ages of 19 to 24 as he goes from an obscure Minnesota musician to the chart-topping folk singer whose groundbreaking performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 saw him “going electric” — the project’s original title.
Production is currently underway in New York and New Jersey, not far from Johnson’s SNL job.

For the first half of this weekend's new episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by "No Country for Old Men" and "Dune" star Josh Brolin, I couldn't stop trying to pinpoint what other performer he was reminding me of, even across a few different sketches. At first, I thought it might have been former "SNL" cast member Al Franken, specifically because of the slightly effeminate way he was portraying a couple of characters. Then it hit me: Josh Brolin rich, deep voice and his slightly off-kilter delivery style felt like the offspring of John Malkovich. Because whenever the frequently villainous John Malkovich is speaking, he's pretty much always talking like John Malkovich. There might be a slight accent every now and then, but it's pretty much always Malkovich being Malkovich. And the same can be said for Josh Brolin.
The good news is that this trait mostly works in Brolin...

New emotions are introduced and old emotions are suppressed in the official trailer for Pixar’s Inside Out 2. The trailer was accompanied by details on the new characters joining the fun inside Riley’s head for the sequel.
Maya Hawke as Anxiety: A bundle of frazzled energy, Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome. Ayo Edebiri as Envy: Envy may be small, but she sure knows what she wants. She’s perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to pine over it. Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui: Ennui couldn’t care less. Bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, Ennui adds the perfect amount of teenage apathy to Riley’s personality when she feels like it. Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment: Embarrassment likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.

If you tuned into "Saturday Night Live" for the first time in awhile, you may have taken a look at this weekend's host Shane Gillis and thought, "Who the hell is this?" Thankfully, the comedian rather self-aware of this surprising turn for "SNL," even acknowledging that he probably shouldn't be on the stage in Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. That's because, a few years ago, Gillis was actually hired as a featured played for "SNL," but he was quickly fired from the show before his debut after some racially insensitive jokes from his own comedy podcast came to light and created a swell of controversy around him. Gillis seems to regret those comments, as he implored those unfamiliar with him not to Google what got him into trouble, but he didn't exactly apologize, so it's still a fairly awkward situation all around.
Speaking of awkward, that's pretty much what we got for this entire episode.

Everyone knows why Shane Gillis was hired, then fired, from Saturday Night Live. But since he never appeared in an episode, there were few who actually got to see why he was tapped to join the 2019 cast in the first place.

Shane Gillis is known for his Donald Trump impersonations on stage, and he brought the character to his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live.
In a parody of a movie trailer for “White Men Can Trump from Newsmax Studios,” Gillis plays an average guy named Gordon Dwyer who “can’t catch a break” at work, in love and on the basketball court. But when he receives a pair of Trump’s recently unveiled $399 branded sneakers from the ex-president, his life changes.
No, his basketball skills do not improve with the sneakers on; he still badly misses. But, physically transforming into Trump, complete with the famous comb-over hair, he tells his friends, “I didn’t miss, it went in,” and they buy it. Because “winning is a state of mind.”

Shane Gillis brought his famous impression of former president Donald Trump to the Feb. 24 episode of “Saturday Night Live” in a faux movie trailer that took aim at the president’s new line of expensive speakers.
The faux trailer for “White Men Can Trump” had Gillis’ everyman character getting a magical pair of Donald Trump’s new line of gold high tops — which retail for $399 — and his life becoming infinitely better. Yet instead of actually making him better at basketball, the sneakers make him an expert at Trump’s unique brand of gaslighting, suddenly able to convince people he’s making baskets when he isn’t.

Nikki Haley joined the Saturday Night Live cast in their cold open segment. The Republican presidential candidate played the role of a concerned South Carolina voter.
During a mock CNN Town Hall, Haley stood from the audience and asked Donald Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, “Why won’t you debate Nikki Haley?”

During Saturday’s cold open, Gayle King (played by Punkie Johnson) and Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) welcomed Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) to CNN to respond to voters’ questions. Haley appeared halfway through the skit when host Ayo Edebiri popped up as an audience member asking Haley, “What would you say was the main cause of the Civil War? And do you think it starts with an ‘S’ and ends with a ‘-lavery?'” Thankfully, Haley conceded that she does,...
