We have had ourselves an amazing three weeks of Olympic awesomeness in Rio. Now it’s back to business as America’s Got Talent returns with more acts performing for a spot in the semi-finals. Did they use the time during the Olympics to practise? Can they deliver a gold medal performance? I loved Kadan Rockett’s act tonight. He got out of all those handcuffs in nothing flat, and when he popped out of the large toolbox at the end, I was as speechless as Simon Cowell was, which amused me greatly. Blake Vogt’s act was entertaining, but I think he

Director: Scott Stewart. Review: Mark Appleton. The producers of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister are back doing what they do best, a spooky horror film based around a young suburban family. Mr & Mrs Barrett live in a suburban street, in a suburban house and have two small children. On the face of it all is well but behind the scenes things aren’t that rosy since Daniel Barrett (played by Josh Hamilton) lost his job and is struggling to get a new one. Lacy Barrett (Keri Russell) works as an estate agent but isn’t bringing in enough to cover all the bills. The elder of the two sons Jesse (Dakota Goyo) tells his little brother Sam (Kadan Rockett) ghost stories at night via walkie-talkies. Unsurprisingly this gives Sam nightmares about the subject of the story, ‘The Sandman’. This all leads up to strange events that start happening to the family at nights.

“Dark Skies” adds a sci-fi twist to the currently popular run of supernatural Hollywood horror typified by the likes of “Paranormal Activity”, “Sinister”, “Insidious” and others, with aliens taking the place of daft demons. Produced by Jason Blum, who worked on the afore-mentioned hits, the film was written and directed by Scott Stewart – a name that might make some run to the hills, given that his last two outings were the entirely risible religious fantasy actioners “Legion” and “Priest”. The story is very familiar stuff indeed, following Keri Russell (“The Americans”) and Josh Hamilton (“J. Edgar”) as the suburban Barretts, a regular couple dealing with the usual economic problems while bringing up their vaguely troublesome sons. With the older Jesse (Dakota Goyo, “Real Steel”) hanging out with the local bad kid and getting into mild partying being difficult enough to deal with, matters take a turn for the weird when...

While the pacing lags a bit towards the middle, Dark Skies is an increasingly suspenseful sci-fi thriller that works well with its small budget and limited effects. Like many recent thrillers (such as Insidious), the movie does a great job creating a creepy atmosphere that slowly sucks the audience in, but runs off the rails by the end. Written and directed by Scott Stewart (Priest and Legion), the film features a small cast including Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett, J. K. Simmons. While trying to stay as spoiler free as possible, Dark Skies follows the events of several weeks as Daniel (Hamilton), Lacy (Russell) Barrett, along with their two sons Jesse (Goyo) and Sammy (Rockett), begin...

Chicago – For a good portion of its running time, Scott Stewart’s sci-fi spookfest “Dark Skies” flirts with the possibility of becoming an effective thriller. There are a handful of sequences fraught with palpable tension, yet it becomes apparent around the halfway mark that the filmmakers don’t have an original idea in their heads. There’s nothing here that hasn’t been done better in countless other pictures.
This is essentially “Paranormal Activity” with aliens imported in from M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs.” There are also shafts of Spielbergian light courtesy of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and eerie hallways with wallpaper borrowed from the Overlook Hotel. The extent to which this film plagiarizes familiar hits is flat-out maddening. When the nails in a boarded up window start unscrewing themselves, prompting a petrified father to shout, “Leave us alone!” it’s impossible for film buffs to not immediately...

Dark Skies was a derivative yet engaging affair that hit the spot and gave me 97 minutes of genuine chills and thrills. It was not well-received when it opened theatrically in February and I never got around to seeing it. Maybe it was bad timing, what with its ad campaign that made it look like the Paranormal Activity movies, which it is similar to except it plays as a thriller instead of a found-footage tape, and with aliens as the home invaders rather than evil spirits. That’s a shame, because despite some forgivable flaws, Dark Skies is a genuinely scary movie. Now it can be rediscovered on the new Blu-ray disc from Starz/Anchor Bay.

When first viewing the trailer for Dark Skies, I was immediately excited to see it. It appeared to be another supernatural horror film concerning a creepy little kid. You can never go wrong using that concept. My interest waned a bit upon learning the movie revolved around an alien encounter. I don't dislike movies about aliens, but they just don't excite me as much as a good ghost story or haunted house flick.
I still held on to hope as I put Dark Skies in my Blu-ray player and settled in to watch it. I can happily report that my hopes weren't dashed. The commercials and trailers for the film captured its essence perfectly.

The biggest thing I take away from Dark Skies is that it comes from Scott Stewart, the same man who brought us Legion and Priest. Both those movies were dumb but fun pieces of effects heavy action, but with Dark Skies he is on a different tack, creating a genuinely creepy tale of an other worldly incursion on a typical American family. The family in question are the Barrets, wife Lacey (Kerri Russell), husband Daniel (Josh Hamilton), and their two sons, 13 year old Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and the younger Sam (Kadan Rockett), whose lives are turned upside when strange events plague their home. Starting small (like food being thrown over the floor and security alarms being triggered), they soon escalate (the mass bird attack which is central to the movies ad campaign), until the Barrets' lives are put in real danger. There is a real sense of unease about this...

Modern horror is a little light on big names but one who should certainly be bigger is Jason Blum. He’s not exactly a household name but a man who almost single-handed seems to be responsible for virtually all the theatrically released horror content of the last few years, a man who can count the Paranormal Activity films, the Insidious (soon to be) franchise, last year’s well received Sinister and even Barry Levinson’s eco-horror The Bay among his successes. While not all of his films hit (the forthcoming Lords of Salem appears to have attained anti-buzz for instance), he still seems to be a man who takes horror seriously and seems to see it as much as a legitimate genre as...

Felicity star Keri Russell continues to prove why she’s such an appealing lead actress, though her performance is completely wasted in this turgid sci-fi guff, wearing its meagre budget on its sleeve alongside every imaginable genre cliche.
Things get weird pretty quickly in Dark Skies for Daniel (Josh Hamilton), Lacy (Russell) and their children, Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and Sammy (Kadan Rockett). Their home gets ransacked, the security system is tripped on its own, and it becomes increasingly clear that a malevolent extra-terrestrial entity wants something with the family. If they are to survive the ordeal as a unit, they will have to demonstrate the strength of their familial bond.
Viewers will be excused for having low expectations given writer-director Scott Stewart’s two “major” features to date, Legion and Priest. Needless to say, he has no qualms living down to forecasts right out of the gate,...

Coming from the producer of recent horror sensations Paranormal Activity and Sinister, Scott Stewart’s Dark Skies is a creative and suspenseful supernatural thriller, that, whilst certainly related to the aforementioned titles, as well as the likes of The Blair Witch Project and Insidious, works more as a homage to such films, though standing strong in its own merit.

Dark Skies is just director Scott Stewart’s third feature film, and focuses on an ordinary suburban family who are rocked by an unsettling series of supernatural events. Hitting our screens on April 3rd, we were fortunate to speak to the filmmaker on the phone ahead of the film’s release.
Speaking to us from across the pond, Stewart tells us of his inspiration behind this feature, what it’s like working with young children in an otherwise adult orientated production – while he also encourages British audiences to go in to see this movie with no expectations, unaware of what you may be in store for…
You were brought up in the suburbs, did that inspire you to make a horror film set in this supposedly peaceful environment?
Yeah absolutely. I mean it absolutely did. I grew up in the suburbs of Northern California in the late 70s and 80s...

When I saw the trailer for Dark Skies, I was honestly taken by surprise. I'd never even heard of the film. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I wasn't seeing advertisements on Facebook or YouTube, so I knew it wasn't being pushed much. New 'Dark Skies' movie delivered lots of thrills, suspense & very weird ending. Dimension Films released their new horror/thriller flick "Dark Skies" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was totally insane as it served up tons of weird thrills and suspense, especially towards the end. Speaking of the end. I have to say,it was a little unsatisfying and just very strange. The movie stars: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett, and J.K. Simmons. Apparently, the producers of the Paranormal Activity movies, made this flick and it came off just as weird and strange as the Paranormal Activity films. In the flick, characters Lacey and Daniel Barrett are living in the suburbs with their two kids Jessie and Sam Barrett. Like these movie usually play out, everything seemed fine and peaceful at first. However, little Sam starts seeing a strange...

Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton are parents who must battle an alien incursion in director Scott Stewart’s “Dark Skies”. Those aliens, I tell ya, always poking and prodding around the place. You’d think people that have already mastered intergalatic space travel would have other things on their plates other than messing around with a family in the suburbs, but apparently, not so much. Check out five clips from “Dark Skies”, a horror/sci-fi movie that actually looks pretty good if you’re into moderately budgeted horror flicks. Don’t expect flying saucers battling it out in space or anything overly “sci-fi-ish” like that, though, that’s not what they’re going for here. As the Barret family’s peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them. “Dark Skies” also stars Dakota Goyo,...

No sooner do we post up a clip full of spooked birds than those Empire folks reveal a new UK quad poster for 'Dark Skies' featuring a whole host of said birds. Edgar'), Dakota Goyo and Kadan Rockett. Anyhoo Scott Charles Stewart helms the Dimension Films project and it arrives here in the UK on 5th April....
