Indie and art film producer Jon Kilik, unlike many, remains hopeful for the personal, mid-budget movie for grown-ups. “Those are the films directors love to make and audiences still love,” says Kilik, being feted this week at Poland’s Camerimage cinematography festival for work of special visual sensitivity.
Having flown in from a shoot in Rome, Kilik confesses he still loves being on set after a career spanning four decades, including work with Spike Lee, Julian Schnabel, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Jim Jarmusch and Oliver Stone.
His latest project filming in Europe, “In the Hand of Dante,” starring Gal Gadot and Oscar Isaac in a metaphorical journey through hell to paradise, is characteristic of Kilik’s lifelong passion for bringing challenging works of literature and art to the screen.
And he’s proven time and again that such films have an audience and are economically viable, he points out, if handled...

Although highly regarded as a theater star — he earned a Tony nomination in 2006 for “Awake and Sing!” and just returned to Broadway last season in “The Price” — Mark Ruffalo is for most people a bona fide movie star. For his film performances, he has been nominated for three Oscars, two Golden Globes and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning one as part of the ensemble cast of “Spotlight” in 2015.

Wrestler Mark Schultz was thrilled with Foxcatcher, the Oscar-nominated film about his life. But then it started being compared to Behind the Candelabra …
I approach Mark Schultz with caution. In 1996, the ex-wrestler’s brother, Dave, was shot dead by the man who had been sponsoring them both, John du Pont. Discussing such a tragedy requires sensitivity – and Schultz has proved himself to be a social media firecracker. Having initially been wildly supportive of Foxcatcher, Bennett Miller’s dramatisation of his story, Schultz then viciously rejected the film, after reading how some critics interpreted it.
“You think I’m going to sit back and watch you destroy my name and the reputation I sweat blood for?” he spat at Miller on Twitter. “You ain’t seen nothing yet, dude.” Similar threats followed: Schultz hated the film now, hated Miller, hated everything “that scum” touched. Then, a fortnight later, he apologised, saying he loved Foxcatcher,...

Mark Schultz has hit out at Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller once again.
The wrester said that Miller turned his life into a "horror story" by focusing on the murder of his brother Dave, who was played by Mark Ruffalo in the 2014 film.
He told ShortList: "I'm happy that my brother was immortalised. That was the main reason I did it.
"I'm very happy that it got five Oscar nominations and that they got Channing Tatum to play me, I keep telling people the only guy they could come up with to play me was the sexiest man in the world!
"But I didn't expect Miller to choose the darkest part of my life to focus on - Dave's murder - and expand that into a movie. I thought they'd focus on the wrestling, becoming the ultimate cage fighter, being victorious.

Excuse us if we go out on a limb here, but something tells us the collective brain trust at The Academy is glad this awards season has mercifully come to an end. After an incredibly diverse 86th Academy Awards ceremony, where "12 Years a Slave" took Best Picture, a Mexican filmmaker won Best Director, Lupita Nyong'o earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and John Ridley won Best Adapted Screenplay, the Oscars appeared to take a step back in 2015. It wasn't just that "Selma" was snubbed in a number of major categories. The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag became a historical footnote that will haunt the Academy for years (and, trust, it will be back again if the public wills it). But it had more to do with all white nominees in the acting categories than just "Selma" itself. This also brought to light that it was yet another year without a female nominee in the Best Director category,...

Five Oscar nominations and no wins seems like an injustice to Bennett Miller's outstanding "Foxcatcher," but time will be the judge of the film, which will surely only grow in stature (be sure to read this great essay by Jessica Kiang about the movie). But if haven't seen the picture, then here's a pretty healthy taste. Indiewire has unveiled the first ten minutes of "Foxcatcher," and it's a great reminder of just how controlled Miller's craft is with every frame of his movie. In the opening minutes we meet Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum), who is a champion in sport, but defeated by life. It's clear he's living to hand-to-mouth, and even a shot as seemingly innocuous as Mark eating in his car carries real weight in regards to his character. And when his brighter, happier brother Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) enters the picture, and we watch the dynamic between them unfold through wrestling warm-ups,...

For the 21st annual Hollywood cover, Annie Leibovitz captured an intimate portrait of the year’s most celebrated actors. The men wear bespoke white-tie, while the women channel Old Hollywood glamour in slinky gold and red. Taking advantage of Amy Adams’s years of dance training for the panel’s front panel, Leibovitz had Channing Tatum lift her up on his shoulder, which prompted Tatum to joke, “I’m wearing Amy Adams.” “We made the picture in the same studio where we did the first Hollywood cover,” Leibovitz, who shot the first...

This year's Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" — are a typically varied assortment. This is a branch, after all, whose choices often reflect consideration of the work itself above Best Picture-contending frontrunners. Just last year we got nominations for films like "Bad Grandpa" and "The Lone Ranger." This time around, the cream of the crop just happened to come in critically acclaimed films. Beginning with "Foxcatcher," Bill Corso and his co-nominee, Dennis Liddiard, had a gargantuan task ahead of them: transforming well-known comedic actors Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, as well as Mark Ruffalo, into something approaching blue blood John du Pont, wrestling wunderkind Mark Schultz and his ill-fated brother Dave. They split duties, with Liddiard handling Tatum's transformation, Corso working on Carell and the two of them coming to Ruffalo when needed. Mark Schultz, whose life is dramatised in the Oscar-nominated movie Foxcatcher, has once again apologised for criticising the movie.

Schultz initially supported the movie publicly, only to later hit out at director Bennett Miller for crafting "complete fiction" with the character relationships.
The wrestler recanted his criticism over the weekend by insisting that he was "temporarily insane", and writing: "I apologise to you before the world Bennett. I'm sorry."

He continued: "I am praying so hard #Foxcatcher wins. Especially Bennett Miller, Steve Carell, and Mark Ruffalo.

Just as the year kicked off, a controversy started to surround "Foxcatcher" when Mark Schultz, the wrestler portrayed by Channing Tatum in the film, turned against the movie that he had been praising since it premiered at Cannes. Taking both to Twitter and Facebook, he claimed that Miller's depiction of him in the film was inaccurate, particularly when it came to his emotional state, and he called the director "scum" and threatened to end his career. Schultz later apologized for the harshness of his tone, but said he still stood by his opinion and was defending his legacy. But it's amazing what a difference five Oscar nominations can make. In the last few days, Schultz has hit Twitter and reversed his opinion on "Foxcatcher," sending out no shortage of praise to the film (calling it "a masterpiece"), Channing Tatum, and Bennett Miller, the latter of whom he now calls "the greatest director ever.

Mark Schultz - whose life story was dramatised in Foxcatcher - has apologised for criticising the film and its director, saying that he was "temporarily insane".

The inspirational mentor is dead. On screen, that is. In recent years we've seen a drop-off in this once-beloved trope, with distinctly anti-heroic teachers, instructors and father figures coming to the forefront – see Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson, Steve Carell in Foxcatcher, Breaking Bad's Walter White, etc.
The latest example is Terence Fletcher, Jk Simmons's fearsome and sadistic jazz instructor who terrorises Miles Teller into greatness in this week's stunning Whiplash.

Foxcatcher has opened in cinemas to a rapture of critical acclaim. The story is centred around John DuPont and his eccentric involvement in funding Olympic wrestlers Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz. Despite this being a true story, with several historically accurate scenes, the director Bennet Miller and his team have taken several liberties with the truth. The story, written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, is very much a work of fiction that incorporates aspects of the real John du Pont / Dave Schultz controversy.
Despite problems with the story, it is still very much a satisfying film. Critics have praised the acting performances of Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. It’s an emotionally engrossing film that will please fans who enjoy highbrow movies.

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards were unveiled today with Birdman and Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel continuing to gather momentum as the big day approaches on February 22. However, there were some notable omissions this year, including one giant snub for a particularly awesome movie.

It's hard not to be cynical about the omission of a director like Ava DuVernay in light of recent Academy statistics like these (in brief, Oscar voters are predominantly white men of a certain age). It's even harder when you think back to 2013, when Kathryn Bigelow got snubbed for a Director nomination despite Zero Dark Thirty's numerous other nods.

Much will be made of the victories at Sunday night's Golden Globes and the impact they'll have on the Oscar race, but the truth is, they'll barely have any. For Academy members, voting on the Oscar nominations ended three days before the Globe ceremony (the results of that vote will be announced this Thursday, Jan. 15), and voting on which of those nominees deserve prizes doesn't begin until February 6, far enough in the future for many voters to forget who won Globes on Jan. 11.
What, then, does matter at this stage of the game? Here's a hint: it's not lofty, thoughtful deliberations, based on a year of observant moviegoing, of which films and performers displayed the most aesthetic merit. Rather, it's the little things.
For instance, did President Lyndon B. Johnson actually order FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover to extort Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. into submission, or did Hoover simply...

Director Bennett Miller follows his American football film Moneyball with an altogether eerier exploration of the darker side of sporting triumph
• Steve Carell on Foxcatcher and fame: ‘I’ve never cared about being taken seriously’
Foxcatcher begins with victory: two brothers, two gold medals for wrestling at the 1984 Olympics. This fleeting glory, though, is the beginning of the end. Over the next two hours, Bennett Miller’s film dismantles the American dream, dragging Mark and Dave Schultz into a pit of disillusionment, exploitation and, ultimately, murder.
It begins in 1984, when John du Pont (played by Steve Carell), a patriotic wrestling fan and 45-year-old heir to an obscene family fortune, invites Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) to his Pennsylvania estate. There he outlines a grand plan: he will bankroll Schultz, who in turn will form and coach a team for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Despite his Olympic triumph, Schultz is out of work and needs funding,...

Goodbye to Language (Jean-Luc Godard)
2015 is finally here and so are the Oscars and actual Awards Season. No more of this speculation and hype machine stuff around movies that haven’t come out yet or guilds that haven’t had their say. Oscar voting ends today, January 8, and nominations are revealed bright and early on January 15, one week from today.
This means that any news that breaks between now and next week will have no bearing on the actual nominations (or at least one would think; maybe the North Koreans have some thoughts). And though there will be a few more guilds and awards groups trickling in over the next week that might provide a hint more insight, any predictions should be considered Final.
So what’s so bizarre about this particular week on the Awards calendar is that the film generating the most attention is a movie not even on the awards radar,...

You know it’s Oscar season when the historical-accuracy hit squads show up. Over the past several weeks, it seems that almost every major awards contender has had some kind of high-profile accusation flung at it over its misappropriation of the truth. It happens every year, of course (remember the late Christopher Hitchens laying into The King’s Speech back in 2011?), but this time, it’s reached comically epidemic levels — in part because so many of the Oscar contenders are either biopics or otherwise historical in nature. Recently, some have taken issue with the depiction of Lyndon B. Johnson in Selma (despite the fact that Lbj actually comes off reasonably well in the film). Last week, Foxcatcher got a body blow from its own main subject, Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, who started screaming at director Bennett Miller over social media about the liberties the film took with his life. Before that,...

Vulture is speaking to the screenwriters behind 2014's most acclaimed movies about the scenes they found most difficult to crack. Which pivotal sequences underwent the biggest transformations on their way from script to screen? Today we tackle Foxcatcher, where the wealthy, dangerous John du Pont (Steve Carell) tangles with wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and his brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) as he tries to assemble a world-class wrestling team at his estate. Since director Bennett Miller worked at separate times on the screenplay with writers E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, we spoke to both men about the toughest scene they wrote, and each scene is excerpted below. E. Max Frye: When I came onto the project, Bennett had all this material: a hundred hours of interviews with wrestlers, photographs, public-domain documents, police reports, all kinds of stuff. The question was really, where do we start in this story,...

And the Foxcatcher fiasco continues. After a series of angry tweets were unleashed by Mark Schultz, whose story serves as the basis for Channing Tatum.s performance in the film, the pro wrestler released a Facebook post further detailing his frustration towards the manipulation of his life.s story. Now in a different turn, Warner Bros. had to publicly apologize to Sony, the studio behind Foxcatcher, after one of its employees slammed the film over Twitter. It all started this past Friday when an account by the name of WB Digital tweeted the following: #Foxcatcher Movie Slammed As .Complete Fiction. By The Olympic Wrestler Who Inspired It. .Everything I.ve ever said positive about the movie I take back, I hate it. The argument can be made that this tweet doesn.t fully see the WB slamming Sony, but studios don.t normally circulate this kind of damning information on...

It was inevitable, with so many inspired-by-a-true-story films in the Oscar race, that there would be grumbling about the inaccuracies of various awards-contending movies. This year, however, all those complaints seemed to emerge at once, mostly during the past week. And the gripes are especially bitter, seemingly aimed not just at questioning the movies' factuality but also at sabotaging their chances of winning awards. It's this sort of mudslinging that has many observers wondering if those who complain are actually doing the bidding of campaigners for competing films and performers.
The loudest trash talk last week came from gold-medal-winning Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, who is played by Channing Tatum in the awards-contender "Foxcatcher." Noticing that reviewers of the recently-released films have found a subtext of homosexuality in the movie (though it's all in the way that creepy coach John du Pont, played by Steve Carell, behaves toward Schultz, and not...

Truth isn't just stranger than fiction, it can be downright bizarre and all the more mesmerising for that in Foxcatcher, another triumph for director Bennett Miller.
Picking up a thread from his previous films, Capote and Moneyball, he puts a tightening focus on men in the process of being bought and traded, reduced to commodities in the "home of the free". Steve Carell flies his star-spangled banner proudly as John du Pont, heir to the Du Pont chemical corporation, and it's a truly spine-tingling performance - his best yet.
Channing Tatum squares up well as Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, often framed in profile with facial prosthetics that give him the look of a blunt instrument. It's an echo of the man he is inside; simple but serious,...

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Bart: Before we plunge into 2015, it’s worth revisiting the Sony Saga one more time to acknowledge that some things will never be the same. If studio executives in the future feel inhibited about sending prematurely ejaculated emails, for example, how are they going to they keep their cool? Calling Adam Sandler an asshole and Leonardo “despicable” was clearly an important form of emotional release. The human resources apparatchiks likely will recommend meditation (I’m dubious). Or anger management (more dubious). Pot might help (less dubious).
Fleming: I am reasonably sure that nothing in those emails surprised the people receiving the abuse. Or at least not their reps, who probably heard the same thing verbally. We’re all so time-pressed,...

2Nd Update: Last night, Deadline broke news that a Tweet generated under the Warner Bros Digital banner slammed rival Oscar pic Foxcatcher. Initially, Warner Bros disavowed the Tweet as an imposter, which seemed a bit hard to swallow. Now, the studio has gone the extra mile and gotten to the truth. The Twitter thread was generated through a promotional account by a consultant. Warner Bros Pictures brass, a pretty classy bunch who’ve been embarrassed by all this, has sacked the person behind the Tweet that amplified press reports that Mark Schultz (played in the film by Channing Tatum) has disavowed the movie in his own Twitter and Facebook salvos. Mark Schultz, the real-life Olympic wrestler whose life is portrayed in the Oscar-hopeful Foxcatcher, took to social media over the holidays to blast the movie's director, Bennett Miller. Schultz, who is played by Channing Tatum, called Miller a "punk," "pussy" and "liar" and said his "legacy" as a filmmaker was jeopardized by Foxcatcher. Schultz took particular offense to movie critics who inferred he may have had a homoerotic relationship with John du Pont (played by Steve Carell), the eccentric, millionaire athletic sponsor who went on to kill Schultz's brother David (played by Mark Ruffalo) - and he blames the director for those hints.

Wrestler Mark Schultz has a love-hate relationship with Bennett Miller and the movie Foxcatcher, in which he is portrayed by Channing Tatum. Yesterday, he apologized for a social-media outburst during which he exclaimed his detest for the based-on-a-true-story movie and its director. On Twitter and Facebook, Schultz has mostly helped with the Oscar-hopeful film's promotion, sharing good reviews and saying he loves that the project immortalizes his late brother, Dave. But in the last few days, he has displayed a roller coaster of emotions and sentiments.Yesterday, he wrote: My story and my life are real. I am a real human being. While I may have tweeted out of anger, I in no way regret standing up for myself, nor do I regret calling out the only other man who has had decision making power concerning my image and legacy these past years. Mark Schultz has posted an apology for his "harsh comments" on the film Foxcatcher, which was inspired by his own life.
The movie, directed by Bennett Miller, looks at the murder of Olympic wrestler Mark's (Channing Tatum) brother Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) at the hands of philanthropist John du Pont (Steve Carell) and the aftermath of Dave's death.
Schultz complained about "historical inaccuracies", before posting on Twitter: "Everything I've ever said positive about the movie I take back. I hate it. i hate it. i hate it. I hate it. i hate it. i hate it. I hate it.
"I Hate Bennett Miller. I Hate Everything That Scum Touches. Everything!!!"
The wrestler has since posted on his Facebook page, writing: "My story and my life are real. I am a real human being. While I may have tweeted out of anger, I in no way regret standing up for myself,...

In case you’re unaware, Bennett Miller’s critically acclaimed “Foxcatcher”— which came in at number three on our 20 Best Films Of 2014 staff poll list—is based on a true story. It’s about the Olympian wrestlers Mark and David Schultz, and the wealthy philanthropist and heir John du Pont who took the athletes under his wing, before it all leads to a tragic finale. Steve Carell (who plays DuPont), Channing Tatum and Marc Ruffalo are absolutely terrific in the movie. In fact for our money, while Carell and Ruffalo are solid in the movie, its Tatum who plays the younger Mark Schultz who is a revelation; it’s easily his greatest performance to date. Rendered as insecure, and struggling with self-worth, Tatum shoulders this baggage astonishingly and you feel every inch of wrestler Mark Schultz's uncertainty, self-doubt, and anger. As for the real Mark Schultz, he's been an...

It was only a few months ago during the New York Film Festival that Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller said there was virtually no opposition from any of his film's subjects to telling this story. As it turns out, he spoke a bit prematurely, as the real-like Mark Schultz (played by Channing Tatum in the film) aggressively denounced his portrayal in the film. However, things are becoming even more complicated, as he not only deleted the controversial tweets but released a fuller statement explaining his frustration. Taking to Facebook, Schultz released this post: (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Post by Mark Schultz: Olympic Wrestling Champion.
