5. Low & Clear
The first of two self produced, crowd funded films on this list, Low & Clear announces Tyler Hughen and Kahlil Hudson as non-fiction filmmakers to keep a close eye on (Hudson also worked on the excellent Kumaré this year). Their gorgeously meditative film of fishing and fleeting friendship in the hands of time and distance is the pinnacle of this year’s affective documentary cinema. With a pair of clashing colloquial characters and nothing but the sublimely photographed reflective air of nature, we are left to ponder our own life decisions and whether or not we made the right ones.
4. The Fifth Season
Tragically unseen by most at Tiff, Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth’s Tarkovsky-esque vision of a fablistic world where crops cease to grow is about as grim as you’d expect, showing the degradation of civilization one face at a time. Maintaining the thematics involved with...

Several days after their perplexing decision to hand out jury awards only halfway through the festival, SXSW has now ended their 2012 film run with the audience side of things. This grouping already bestowed feature film plaudits upon Annie Eastman‘s documentary, Bay of All Saints, and Megan Griffiths‘ Eden back on Tuesday, but we now have the victors in Documentary Spotlight, Narrative Spotlight, Emerging Visions, Midnighters, 24 Beats Per Second, SXGlobal, and Festival Favorites.
The only one of this bunch that we managed to catch was Matthew Lillard‘s Fat Kid Rules the World — a film that, despite its positive buzz, was not in our favor — while the rest of the titles (discounting Citadel) are ones I don’t have much, if any familiarity with; I’ll certainly end up checking out some throughout the year, depending on the ensuing reviews. That might sound like disinterest to some, but in a...

As the South by Southwest Film Festival winds to a close, the fest has announced a batch of audience award winners. Matthew Lillard’s directorial debut, Fat Kid Rules the World, an adaptation of K. L. Going’s young adult novel about an overweight teen, claimed the prize in the Narrative Feature Spotlight category. Joe Berlinger’s documentary Under African Skies, about Paul Simon’s return visit to South Africa, was the winner in the 24 Beats Per Second sidebar, which featured music-themed films. The other audience winners included Katy Dellamaggiore’s Brooklyn Castle, Documentary Feature Spotlight; Kahlil Hudson and Tyler Hughen’s Low &

Some of the most important awards that are given out at a festival are its Audience Awards. Although they may not necessarily hold as much weight with film snobs worldwide, they at least let filmmakers know that the real film critics of the world, every day fans, are coming out and enjoying their films. Now I’m not sure why SXSW chooses to hold two separate awards shows, but nonetheless yesterday’s festival saw the announcement of the remaining Audience Award winning films (which just so happen to include my favorite ‘Citadel’). They are as follows:

Directors Kahlil Hudson and Tyler Hughen found an unexpected autobiographical element to their fly fishing documentary "Low & Clear." The film offered the directors an opportunity to work together after several years apart, much like the protagonists of the film, who reunite for a fishing trip. The directors cite Kelly Reichardt's "Old Joy" as an inspiration for their film. What It's About: The documentary follows two old friends J.T. Van Zandt and Alex "Xenie" Hall on a winter fly fishing trip to Canada. As they attempt to reconnect, they struggle with how time has changed them and their friendship. Says director Kahlil Hudson: "Fly fishing is a meditative, internal and often lonely activity punctuated with brief, intense bouts of triumph and dispair--as J.T. puts it: a microcosm of life itself. We began filming without knowing where the story would lead, but with the confidence that whatever we discovered would reveal a truth.

In less than a month the SXSW Film Festival will kick off (Friday, March 9, to be exact), and the line-up keeps getting better and better. The festival has announced some exciting additions to their already-stellar line-up including the Sundance hits Safety Not Guaranteed, Searching for Sugar Man, Chasing Ice, Shut Up and Play the Hits, Sleepwalk with Me along with the world premiere of Steve Taylor‘s Blue Like Jazz, and Todd Rohal‘s Nature Calls. They have also added the Oscar nominated Montreal film Monsieur Lazhar which we have championed since its World Premiere at Tiff.

SXSW has announced a few late additions, rounding out a lineup that already includes high-profile world-premieres from Nelson George, Lena Dunham, Drew Goddard, Caveh Zahedi, and the Duplass Brothers. Notably, Todd Rohal’s Nature Calls, his Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswald-starring followup to last year’s surrealist comedy The Catechism Cataclysm, will premiere in the Narrative Spotlight section, while Sundance favorites such as Shut Up and Play the Hits, Safety Not Guaranteed, and Sleepwalk with Me will screen as well.

After a few announcements, the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival has firmed up their schedule, adding a number of notable films including a few we saw at Sundance. Among them include the LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits (review here), Mike Birbiglia‘s Sleepwalk With Me (review here) and Safety Not Guaranteed (review here) starring Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass. Also jumping out as one of my most-anticipated is Todd Rohal‘s The Catechism Cataclysm follow-up Nature Calls, with Patton Oswalt, Johnny Knoxville and Rob Riggle. Check them all out below for the festival kicking off March 9th.
