Exclusive: Outfest will expand its Screenwriting Lab this year, in partnership with Netflix.
The Outfest Screenwriting Lab was established in 1997 as a screenwriting contest, and has since become the cornerstone of the organization’s education and creative development programming. It will this year provide 10 Lgbtqia+ screenwriters with one-on-one mentorship from top industry showrunners, executives, and writers who will offer professional development, scriptwriting support and insight into the latest trends within the industry, having supported eight scribes in 2021.
The week-long intensive lab will take place virtually in October and will thus be accessible to storytellers across the globe, with applications opening today. Outfest is expanding access to its program with support from Netflix, by waiving submission fees for all applicants and providing grants to help financially support each of the selected screenwriters.

When Telemundo comes to her mind, the first thing Bianca Quesada thinks about is her grandma’s television set and seeing telenovelas with the same soapy narratives that have been told by the genre for ages. Fast-forward to today, and the “Vida” development alum will be producing unscripted and scripted content for Telemundo that will expand the aperture of the medium, redefining what a telenovela can be.
“We both fundamentally believe that the Latinx experience is not monolithic and that it is not a one-size-fits-all narrative. We want to bridge the nuance and reliability of characters and move from just a Latin or a Hispanic experience to a universal human experience,” Quesada tells Variety. “Hollywood has been a perpetrator of regurgitation of negative stereotypes about our people, and to a degree, there weren’t enough of us to hold the people in storytelling accountable for the types of depictions,” she added.

Exclusive: Danny Ramirez (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has signed on to produce and star in thriller To Die Sane.
The genre pic centers on a brutally effective Mexican-American Ice agent who becomes increasingly paranoid and unhinged after a detained young immigrant commits suicide and his fellow agents fall victim one by one to El Cuco, the mythic child-snatching figure of Latino lore.
Moises Zamora and Carlos Cisco wrote the script; Ramirez will produce alongside Zamora and Bianca Quesada. A director for the project, from Zone One Productions, has not yet been disclosed.
Ramirez recently co-starred opposite Anthony Mackie in Disney+ and Marvel’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
