Good news for those who wish to know what their Twitter feed’s jacking off to: the Criterion Channel are launching an erotic thriller series that includes De Palma’s Dressed to Kill and Body Double, the Wachowskis’ Bound, and so many other movies to stir up that ceaseless, fruitless “why do movies have sex scenes?” discourse. (Better or worse than middle-age film critics implying they have a hard-on? I’m so indignant at being forced to choose.) Similarly lurid, if not a bit more frightening, is a David Lynch retro that includes the Criterion editions of Lost Highway and Inland Empire (about which I spoke to Lynch last year), a series of shorts, and a one-month-only engagement for Dune, a film that should be there in perpetuity.

Rajee Samarasinghe was born and raised amidst the decades-long civil war in Sri Lanka. He later left for the United States where he is now based. Much of his work examines sociopolitical conditions in Sri Lanka through the scope of deconstructing ethnographic practices and the colonial gaze in contemporary media. “Lotus Eyed-Girl” is an experimental short loosely based on the erotic poem “Caurapañcāśikā” by Bilhana, which was written in prison upon discovery of the poet’s clandestine affair with Princess Yaminipurnatilaka. The verses were written while awaiting judgment, not knowing if he was to be executed or exiled.
“Lotus Eyed-Girl“ is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
Essentially a series of vignettes, the 6-minute dialogue-less short begins in black-and-white, with a girl lying on her side, with her mouth open. Something that looks like seeds come out of her mouth, along with saliva. The next sequence comprises of a rapid...

“The Eyes of Summer” is the latest experimental short by the Sri Lankan director and visual artist Rajee Samarasinghe. The black-and-white film was shown in numerous festivals around the world and has won an award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
Created in collaboration with the filmmaker’s family members and shot in his mother’s remote hamlet in Southern Sri Lanka, the movie has a semi-improvised story about a young girl’s contact with ghosts. This is based on his mother’s stories about her interaction with the village spirits. These scenes of what the director calls spectral ethnography intertwine with abstract shots of nature and of the hamlet’s inhabitants after the end of the protracted civil war.
Experimental shorts such as this are notoriously difficult to understand and interpret. This is because, by nature, they are more open and suggestive than direct. They create atmosphere, evoke feelings,...
