Spoiler Alert: This article includes details of Sunday’s series finale of Showtime’s docuseries The Circus.
Showtime’s The Circus launched eight years ago with a title that suggested politics infused with a bit of crazy spectacle, but it ended tonight with anxiety, angst and even a sense of dread for what’s ahead.
The docuseries wrapped up after an eventful week: Donald Trump testifying in his civil trial, off-year elections that saw some unexpected Democratic wins and a Republican debate that may ultimately prove to be irrelevant.
But what stood out in the episode were a series of interviews from figures across the political spectrum, which has refracted quite a bit since The Circus debuted. The finale reflected the precarious state of politics, driven largely by the rise and endurance of Donald Trump and the reaction against him and his movement.

Hosted by John Heilemann, Mark McKinnon, and Jennifer Palmieri, the four-time Emmy nominated political docuseries offered viewers a deeper look at the nation’s biggest political stories inside the beltway from Donald Trump’s unexpected presidential victory and his contentious time in office, to the polarizing politics of the pandemic, the 2020 election and ensuing insurrection on Capitol Hill, as well as Biden’s presidency at a time of international turmoil.
“When we started ‘The Circus’ in 2016, we thought it would be a one-and-done deal. Eight seasons and 130 episodes later, we’re still agog that Showtime gave us the trust and support that kept us cranking on this long, strange trip — and let us prove that our idea of doing a weekly,...

The Circus, the Showtime docuseries that presented the chaotic world of politics in a weekly narrative, is ending its run after eight seasons and 130 episodes.
The show, with regular host correspondents are Mark McKinnon, John Heilemann and Jennifer Palmieri, will have its final episode on Sunday on Paramount+ with Showtime and Showtime linear.
Showtime decided not to renew the series amid changes at the premium network. One of the big champions of the show, David Nevins, departed last year.
The Circus is ending just on the cusp of the 2024 presidential cycle, in what might be a fight-to-the-finish rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the latter of whom is likely to spend the better part of the year in court facing criminal charges.
The show’s hosts haven’t foreclosed the possibility of continuing on another platform, but they gave credit to Showtime for embracing the idea for The Circus and staying with it.

In 2016, Stephen Colbert hosted a memorable, if uncomfortable, election night special on the evening of November 8th. Expecting a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton, the mood of the special shifted as the politically liberal Colbert, his guests, and his audience slowly realized that Donald Trump would be claiming victory over the presidency.
Somehow, that hasn’t dissuaded Colbert from doing it again. The Late Show host announced on Monday that he’d be hosting a 2020 election night special on Showtime on Tuesday, November 3rd, beginning at 11:00 p.m. Et.

The Circus, Showtime’s political docuseries, is returning for the second half of its fifth season on August 16. Co-host John Heilemann said the show likely will look different as a result of the production challenges faced shooting a series during the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking on the Campaign HQ podcast, hosted by President Barack Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe, Heilemann opened up about how production might look on its return and teased a slightly extended run past November depending on the election result.
Heilemann called The Circus the “ultimate field show.” He said that he and fellow hosts Alex Wagner and Mark McKinnon previously shot about 15 interviews for each 30-minute show. “That means there’s four camera crews who are on planes almost every day,” he said, “and we’re deciding on a daily basis where the three hosts are going and the crews are going. Showtime’s The Circus returns on Sunday, and a focus on the debut is on the senators running for president who are being forced to leave the campaign trail to be present for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump.
In one clip, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) is shown sitting down to hold a “tele-town hall” in Washington last week after the day’s marathon impeachment proceedings wrapped up.
It’s 9:45 p.m. Et, and Klobuchar shows a bit of fatigued humor after the long day.
“Looking forward to talking to everyone in Iowa. Hopefully we don’t wake anyone up and piss them off,” Klobuchar says as she sits down to talk to the voters.
Told that 12,000 people were on the call, Klobuchar says, “Ok, that is really a lot,” she says, laughing and rubbing her eye. “Ok I better get my act together now… Oh, shorter answers.”

Though the network will not air live coverage during the election cycle, Showtime still very much so intends to have its finger on the political pulse, doubling its dose of “The Circus” during this presidential election year.
“Between ‘The Circus,’ ‘Our Cartoon President,’ and ‘Desus & Mero,’ we feel like we’ll have a very steady stream of either real coverage or satirical coverage,” Showtime entertainment co-head Jana Winograde told Variety on Monday. “One of the things we love about all of those shows are they give us an always-on presence. They’re very well-timed for the political cycle this year to make sure that we’re on when the stories are on that need to be told. And in between we have ‘Vice.’
“The Circus” will debut this season on Jan. 26, a week before the Iowa caucus on Feb. 3, and will cluster episodes around primaries, conventions and elections.

“As tense, angry and emotionally raw as 2016 was, this campaign is going to be more,” The Circus’ John Heilemann warned the TCA today. “I think this is a very dangerous time,” the Game Change co-author added of today’s deeply divided America.
“The President is going to run a racist political campaign,” Heilemann bluntly declared as co-hosts Mark McKinnon and Alex Wagner joined the Recount founder on-stage Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
“We’ve never seen anything like that,” the veteran political journalist stated in a week that has seen Democrats debate the ex-Celebrity Apprentice’s constant call to America’s worst nature and Will Hurd, the only African-American Gop member of the House of Representatives disclosing that he is not running for re-election.
“People who sounded alarmist in the past, don’t sound alarmist any more,” Wu-Tang Clan t-shirt wearing Heilemann concluded in what was an analysis heavy panel.

Hey, "Blue Bloods" fans. Unfortunately, it's one of those times again where we have to inform you that your favorite show is about to take a small hiatus. However, this one won't last for too long, especially since we're close to the end of season 9. So, here's the deal. We have been informed that the next, new episode 20 will not be airing next Friday night, April 19,2019. No, no, no. Instead, CBS has scheduled it to air on Friday night, April 26, 2019 in its same 9pm central standard time slot. So, be sure to mark that very important date down on your TV show calendars. We don't have an exact reason for why they're doing this. We just know that they are. We're guessing it probably has something to do with scheduling. CBS probably wants the season finale to land on a certain night in May 2019. So, they're skipping a week to make sure that happens.

Even after Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the newest Supreme Court justice, political pundits continue to evaluate the fall-out from a confirmation process that underscored the nation’s deep divisions.

Veteran political strategist and commentator Steven Schmidt has boarded Showtime’s weekly political docuseries The Circus as a recurring on-air contributor. He’ll join hosts John Heilemann, Alex Wagner and Mark McKinnon when the show returns this Sunday, September 16.
Schmidt is no newcomer to The Circus, having made several previous appearances offering insight on his more than two decades working at the highest levels of national Republican politics. Schmidt played key roles on the campaign teams of Arizona Senator John McCain, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President George W. Bush, whom he also served in the White House. Schmidt is currently a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC and co-host of the podcast Words Matter.
This fall, The Circus returns to its roots on the campaign trail, following House, Senate and gubernatorial contests across the country – as well as the ongoing upheaval of the Trump administration.

Showtime is coming to a crossroads as its signature series for most of the past decade, “Homeland,” heads into its ninth and final season next year.
This transition comes at a fraught time for established premium TV players. The competition has exploded and the benchmark for content expenditure is now set not by longtime rival HBO but by a digital upstart with seemingly limitless coffers and a $300-plus share price (aka Netflix).
Showtime Networks CEO David Nevins is steering CBS Corp.’s pay cable unit through a significant expansion as it delivers more original scripted and unscripted series, documentaries, specials, and sports-related programming than at any time in its 42-year history. Growth spurred by the availability of the channel as a standalone streaming app since 2015 has helped bolster the company at a time when it has to offer more programming to remain a must-keep for pay TV viewers.

Showtime’s weekly half-hour political docuseries The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth returns for its third season tonight. Co-hosts John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon will be joined by new host Alex Wagner, who has replaced Mark Halperin.
The show hit a decidedly uncertain period in October when Halperin exited amid multiple accusations of sexual harassment during his time as political director at ABC News last decade. After deliberating over it, network execs confirmed in early January that Season 3 was a go. In an interview with Deadline, Heilemann addressed the fall limbo, but he and Wagner made the case that Year 2 of Donald Trump has made the show more essential than ever in a crowded political media landscape.
While Heilemann said “there wasn’t that much doubt” about the show continuing, he allowed, “The world is an unpredictable place.” Rather than the hosts, though, he said the concept...
