Get ready for some epic space action with Colonials – the spectacular Sci-Fi opus from directors Andrew Balek (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) and Joe Bland (Ellipse). Can colonists from Mars save the galaxy from human extinction in this action-packed, interstellar feature?
The film got its UK premiere release on digital platforms on 17th April 2023 courtesy of Reel 2 Reel Films.
A space explorer travelling from Mars, Silas, embarks on a reconnaissance mission to Earth – which lies in ruin – to figure out what happened to the ‘humans of old’.
But before he can reach his destination, his squad is intercepted by the Exiles – a dangerously advanced and perilously evil Moon-based civilisation – who destroys their ship.
Separated from his squadron, Silas crash-lands alone on Earth. But, having lost his memory in the accident, he must figure out who he is and his purpose on Earth before the Exiles find and destroy him…...

Opening on broken ship pieces floating above Earth, a distress signal plays detailing how the planet is in ruins courtesy of The Exiles, an antagonistic moon-based civilization. Directors Andrew Balek and Joe Bland highlight the dire situation before cutting to Silas (Greg Kriek), a space colonist from Mars who’s excited to partake in an important mission to discover what happened to the ‘humans of old.’ That eagerness transforms into terror when The Exiles attack, destroying Silas’ ship and causing him to crash-land on Earth. Awakening without his memory, the colonist is found by Resistance members intent on saving the galaxy from human extinction.

"Bring me that Colonial!" Epic Pictures Group has unveiled an official trailer for an indie sci-fi film called Colonials, launching on VOD to watch in the US this April. It was previewed at Comic-Con last year and looks like it might actually be entertaining for anyone into epic interplanetary storytelling. A space colonist traveling from Mars crash lands on Earth after an attack from an advance Moon enforcer. When he wakes up, he becomes caught up in a movement to save a Resistance stuck in the dark ages – and the galaxy from human extinction. Colonials was directed by Andrew Balek and Joe Bland, for Bland Productions. Starring Greg Kriek, Sean Kanan, Daniel Roebuck, Jon Provost, and Allie Ayers Lindsey. This looks quite impressive, with a large scale concept and ambitious ideas - including intriguing designs for the spaceships & suits. It does look a bit like a video game, but I'm...

[Note: With the film finally out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of sci-fi film Ellipse]
Low budget sci-fi in many people’s minds are films featured on (unsurprisingly) the SyFy channel. Usually filled with poor CGI and ridiculous storylines. But for every SyFy original there’s a Freaks or The Endless (check these movies out if you haven’t already), so I always go into these movies, like almost most movies, with a very open mind.
Unfortunately it is clear from almost the very start of the movie that this is low budget. We get a poor CGI spacecraft at the forefront of things but if I’m honest, it never affected my enjoyment of the movie. The spacecraft features quite a lot but once I got over the initial fact that it doesn’t look great it went to the back of my mind and that was it.

Pre-credit sequence. We begin at Nagarote, as I try to remember where we left off and what the names of the tribes were. Shirin is sad to have been blindsided and to have lost Max. "I don't know that I can trust you," Carolyn tells Shirin, further shunting her aside. Shirin protests that Max made her isolate herself, but Carolyn is being rough, making it clear that she wants no part of the newly solitary Shirin. "Is anybody left in this game willing to play with me?" Shirin ponders, wondering if this is a reflection on her. Hali levels with Shirin and tells her that Max had been annoying and that people felt like she was annoying as well. Ouch. This hits home for Shirin, who grew up rich, but not popular. So sad. I guess. Kinda. "I'm trying to do now what I was incapable of doing back then,...
