"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is one of the best TV shows of all time, but by this point, the Joss Whedon series is as infamous as it is famous. The seven-season coming-of-age series is about finding family and support as much as it is about slaying vamps, so it's always hard to reconcile the show fans loved with the hypocritical behaviors apparently on display on set.
In the years since the show has ended, several actors and colleagues have spoken up about alleged mistreatment from Whedon. Charisma Carpenter, who played mean girl Cordelia, released a statement alleging that the series writer-creator was "casually cruel" to her on several occasions, especially with regards to her pregnancy. Whedon's ex-wife Kai Cole also penned a blog post for The Wrap calling the writer, who was lauded as a groundbreaking feminist voice of television, a hypocrite for hiding "multiple affairs and a number of...

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” officially returns to cable syndication, sans any mention of its creator in press materials. While every generation has a chosen one, Joss Whedon decidedly got the ax when it came to a retcon rebranding of the series. In an announcement shared with press today, Whedon’s name was not included in the release.
Fuse announced on the series’ 25th anniversary that “Buffy” will be back on cable starting October 1 under the network’s “lineup of empowering content” banner. The Latinx-owned, youth-centered multi-platform entertainment company Fuse Media will offer all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as part of a licensing deal with Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution.
The series stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as vampire-hunting teen Buffy, who slays not only the souls of blood-sucking demons but also two brooding vampire love interests, played by David Boreanaz and James Marsters. In its original run, “Buffy...

Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon has unexpectedly departed his upcoming HBO series, The Nevers. The revelation arrived in what some viewed as a “holiday news dump” just before Thanksgiving this week, and both Whedon and HBO’s statements on his exit had notably different vibes.
Whedon had been working on The Nevers at HBO for two years with Buffy and Angel alums Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. The series stars Outlander’s Laura Donnelly, and focuses on a group of women in Victorian times who fight enemies with their strange abilities.
Usually a steady presence on Twitter, writer-director Whedon hadn’t tweeted anything for over a fortnight, and on late Wednesday when news broke that he and HBO had parted ways on The Nevers, HBO’s statement was objectively brief and certainly lacking in ‘best wishes’ for the show’s creator.

The Justice League that landed with a thud in theaters back in 2017 was a disaster. Despite the efforts of Warner Bros., the finished product was clearly two separate films crudely stitched together. The CGI was terrible, the plot was full of holes and the regraded, colour-tinted visuals were outright ugly. But probably the biggest casualty of the process was Ray Fisher’s Cyborg.
Zack Snyder had intended Cyborg to be at the heart of the movie, bringing Fisher into the creative process in order to help him understand the hero. Then came Joss Whedon, who drastically trimmed down the role of the team’s only African-American character, cut the majority of his scenes and tried to reduce him to a “booyah!” spouting caricature.
But Fisher’s treatment on-screen sounds like it pales in comparison to his treatment off-screen. Since the Snyder Cut was officially announced, Fisher has called out Joss...

Casey Bloys Says ‘Probably No’ to Taking on Joss Whedon’s ‘Buffy’ Reboot in Addition to ‘The Nevers’
HBO is about to become the home of Joss Whedon’s big return to the small screen with the recently-announced badass Victorian women sci-fi drama, “The Nevers.” But does that mean they want to become the home to his even-more-recently-announced “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, too?
Never say never, but the cable network’s programming boss, Casey Bloys, told TheWrap “probably no,” during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday, noting that “The Nevers” is what they are focused on right now.
“You know, I will say I think that ‘The Nevers’ is going to be Joss’ focus,” Bloys said, when asked about HBO taking on the cult classic’s return, too, as the project does not yet have a network (or streamer) attached to it. “I don’t know to what extent he’s going to be involved in [the ‘Buffy’ reboot]. I don’t carry a sign over my head announcing my feminism—I do it with a tote bag from Emily’s List, which I use to, uh, tote my lunch and papers and such back and forth from work. Said bag is inscribed with the following:
feminism noun fem-i-nism ‘fe-ma-,ni-zam
The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities
—Merriam-Webster
I’ve always thought of “equal rights and opportunities” in terms of work and salary, but I suppose it can also be applied to the prerogative of making a total ass of yourself in public, regardless of gender.
I am referring to the “Whedon vs. Cole” controversy that my buddy John Ostrander talked about yesterday, and which has caused mucho uproar all over the web, including over at the Whedonverse fan site, which is supposedly shutting down over it, although I had no trouble opening...

Joss Whedon created Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and is credited with writing strong female roles and espousing feminist ideals – but not by his ex-wife, Kai Cole, who on the blog The Wrap accused him of being a serial cheater during their marriage and was a “hypocrite preaching feminist ideals.” This has led to a number of (now ex) fans venting their anger and feelings of betrayal.
Is it true? I dunno. I don’t know Whedon and Cole personally. Could she be lying? Possibly. Could he be an asshole? Possibly. It’s not the point of this column, however. The question I want to consider is – should Whedon, or any artist or celebrity, be considered a role model?

As stories of sexual abuse and assault by well-known men grow more commonplace, a refrain has emerged, one that might sound like a plea: Listen to women. Believe women. Even when they speak out against someone that might be considered a genius or hero, don’t ignore their stories.
This week, “listen to women” became a roar. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole wrote frankly from her perspective about Whedon being a “fake feminist” and the years he allegedly spent cheating on her. Tig Notaro, in promoting the new season of her Amazon series “One Mississippi,” spoke out regarding sexual harrassment allegations made against Louis C.K.,who also serves as the show’s executive producer.

Being born a man in this century seems to be something that can be used against you at the turn of a hat, or the drop of an angry ex-wife’s carefully worded rant about you. Some men might deserve it because let’s face it, men aren’t any more perfect than women when it comes to many things in life, but the case of Joss Whedon, whose contributions to feminism in the form of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have earned him high praise and much attention, it seems that things aren’t so black and white. Over the weekend, Joss Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole posted an essay detailing the Avengers director and Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator’s extensive history of infidelity and apparent habit of hiding behind his feminist beliefs as a way to justify lying to his wife and spending time with his female colleagues. Cole explained that one of the reasons for her essay was to let people who idolize Whedon and celebrate his work know that he’s not necessarily the man that they think he is. That message may have made a big impact on Joss Whedon fan site Whedonesque, because in a brief post this morning, the site’s administrators announced that they’re closing it down after 15 years.

I've been a huge fan of Joss Whedon ever since his early Buffy The Vampire Slayer days. He's an insanely talented individual that has made some amazing TV series and films. One of the things he is best known for is his strong the strong female characters that he has given fans. He's also known for his feminist ideals and has even been presented with awards for them.
As it turns out, Whedon's ex-wife, Kai Cole, knows a very different part of the man and it's a part that fans, like myself, don't want to hear. She recently wrote an essay that was posted on The Wrap detailing her history with Whedon and some of the events that occurred during their 16 years marriage.

Whether it’s deserved or not is debatable, but Joss Whedon has a reputation for being a feminist writer/director who has a particular penchant for strong, well-rounded female characters. As a fan of writer and director Joss Whedon (pictured above on set) and his recurring ensemble of talented actors including Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion and Clark Gregg, I was intrigued to hear about Whedon's thematic version of a classic Shakespeare comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. I saw this darkly humorous film at SXSW this year (Don's review) and participated in a roundtable discussion with director Whedon and several members of the cast -- Denisof, Fillion and Gregg. The movie is now in theatrical release and will open in Austin on Friday.
Whedon successfully delivers a dark and humorous portrayal of lovers at odds due to misunderstandings of their own making as well as from outside forces. I strongly agree with Don's observation that "with its cast of stars from Whedon's hit films and shows, it may also introduce an entirely new audience to the wonders of Shakespearean theater.

After Joss Whedon finished filming his $220 million mega-blockbuster "The Avengers," he knew he had to do something to unwind. And while most people would take a well-earned vacation after a massive project like that, Whedon instead chose to make another movie. Filmed in 12 days. At his house. Because of course he did.
Inspired by informal Shakespeare readings he and his friends had been holding for years, Whedon assembled his filmmaking family and frequent collaborators like Nathan Fillion, Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker to help recreate that fun, relaxed atmosphere. Inspired by informal Shakespeare readings he and his friends had been holding for years, Whedon assembled his filmmaking family and frequent collaborators like Nathan Fillion, Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker to help recreate that fun, relaxed atmosphere. The result is "Much Ado About Nothing," a low-budget and lighthearted modern retelling of one of the Bard's most beloved comedies.

As if there weren’t enough to admire about Joss Whedon already, he’s decided to follow up the ultimate comic book superhero movie (The Avengers) with a lively, original reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Cast almost entirely with actors who are familiar from their other work within the Whedonverse (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse), it was shot in luminous black & white at Whedon’s beautiful home—designed by his architect/producer wife, Kai Cole. This spirited rendition of the Bard’s comedy of sexual misadventures manages to reach across the centuries by using a modern setting but never commenting on it. While newcomers to Shakespearean...

Back in 2011, between shooting and editing The Avengers, Joss Whedon was supposed to take his wife, producer Kai Cole, on a dream Italian vacation to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Sensing an oncoming crisis of faith in filmmaking — perhaps one reason they’ve been able to achieve 20 years of marriage in an industry that seemingly grinds up and spits out unions just for kicks — she had another idea.
She suggested he finally shoot his dream project, a new black-and-white contemporary spin on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing using the original text with his friends/constant collaborators like Nathan Fillion, Alexis Denisof...

-- Joss Whedon's bare-bones "Much Ado About Nothing" is the cinematic equivalent of Shakespeare in the parking lot – and proof, again, that it doesn't take much doing to bring Shakespeare to life.
The circumstances of this low-budget, black-and-white "Much Ado" is already well known: Whedon shot it at his Los Angeles home over just 12 days immediately after production for a slightly larger film he directed: "The Avengers." So this adaptation – a Santa Monica house party – of one of Shakespeare's great comedies arrives with perhaps a touch of smugness. It's almost surely the only time the Bard has been performed with a suburban golf course in the background.
But Whedon, the fanboy hero of cultishly adored TV shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly," is particularly suited to "Much Ado About Nothing," which Kenneth Branagh adapted in a 1993 film. Whedon can write some of the best banter around, so...

Sunday at WonderCon brought a panel for "Much Ado About Nothing," the black and white modern take on Shakespeare's play, directed by Joss Whedon. Appearing with Whedon were several members of the cast, and a couple key crew members.
The movie was Whedon's "vacation" after he finished filming "The Avengers." He kept it a secret until finished, filming the whole thing at his house over a 12-day period. For Whedon fans, the cast brings together favorites from just about all of his projects, from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," to "Firefly," with nearly his entire body of work represented.
The Q&A started off with everyone explaining how, exactly, they got involved with movie. Nearly everyone on stage has the same story: "I got an email from Joss around two in the morning." This being a much smaller production, Whedon relied on personally reaching out to people he's worked with, and...

For Joss Whedon, to write and read comes by nature. On a two-week break from completing "Marvel's The Avengers" in 2011, Whedon summoned a bunch of his famous friends to his California home to shoot an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, had its U.S. debut at the SXSW Film Festival on Saturday afternoon.
"When Joss asks you to do anything, you always say yes. Then worry about it afterward," Alexis Denisof, who starred for Whedon on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and played "The Other" in "Marvel's The Avengers," said during a Q&A after the screening. "There wasn't that much time to worry about it, because he also said, 'We're doing it in a couple of weeks.' For sure, it was a labor of love and there was a lot of love, but...

Shakespeare's classic comedy is given a contemporary spin in Joss Whedon's film, Much Ado About Nothing. Shot in just 12 days (and using the original text), the story of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick offers a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love. Much Ado About Nothing, a modern version of Shakespeare’s classic comedy adapted and directed by Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog), is the first feature from Bellwether, a micro-studio created by Whedon and Kai Cole for the production of small, independent narratives for all media, embracing a Diy ethos and newer technologies for, in this particular case, a somewhat older story. The trailer for Joss Whedon's Shakespeare adaptation "Much Ado About Nothing" has finally arrived, and it is a Whedonite's dream. Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof made a fantastic match as leads Beatrice and Benedick, and that can be proven in this new teaser.
"Much Ado About Nothing" made its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012 and earned positive reviews for its contemporary take on the Shakespearean classic. But fans of Whedon's work will appreciate the fact that he got together a group of his closest friends and frequent collaborators to make the film when he was supposed to instead be going on vacation to Italy with his wife Kai Cole. That's why you'll see people like "Firefly's" Nathan Fillion and Sean Maher, "Dollhouse's" Fran Kranz and "The Avengers'" Clark Gregg in the trailer for this movie.

Of all the post-Avengers projects available to him, why did Joss Whedon choose an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing?
In September 2011, Joss Whedon was days from finishing principal photography on The Avengers and planning an anniversary trip to Italy with his producer wife, Kai Cole. As he tells it, Cole suggested they ditch the holiday and use the time to finally make the Much Ado About Nothing adaptation Whedon had been planning since he’d heard Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof as Beatrice and Benedick at one of the regular Shakespeare readings Whedon and Cole held at their California home.
With the means (Cole and Whedon’s Bellwether production company was set up for just such micro-budget projects), the location (the couple’s Santa Monica house, designed by Cole), the cast (plucked from his regular Whedonverse troupe), and the will (Whedon’s never...

Toronto — Joss Whedon figures if Shakespeare were alive today, he might be writing superhero stories. Only better ones than Whedon and his colleagues are doing.
Whedon, the writer-director behind this summer's superhero sensation "The Avengers," has unveiled a passion project at the Toronto International Film Festival – his adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing."
Considering the fantastic worlds of ghosts, sorcerers and witches of Shakespeare's works, Whedon said the playwright might feel right at home working in a superhero realm such as the Marvel Comics universe of "The Avengers."
"Yeah, I think he very well might. He'd be doing it better than the rest of us. But he was not afraid of the big themes and the bigger-than-life characters," Whedon said in an interview at Toronto, where his "Much Ado" premiered over the weekend. "And his stuff was full of pop-culture references. I'm not comparing myself to him, but I am saying,...

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are jointly acquiring North American distribution rights to Joss Whedon’s quickie adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," which played well at the Toronto Film Festival. This is the latest buy from the two companies, which have been on a spree at this festival. As he was in post-production on Marvel's "The Avengers," the year's biggest blockbuster, Whedon made a contemporary, black-and-white “Much Ado About Nothing” for the love of Shakespeare, which his English teacher mother read to him as a child in Manhattan. Producers Whedon and his wife Kai Cole shot the film in 12 days at their home in Los Angeles--in iambic pentameter--via their new indie microbudget studio, Bellwether Studios. (They are currently completing post-production on Whedon's romantic script “In Your Eyes," directed by Brin Hill.) The cast is packed with Whedon faves: Amy Acker and...
