P-Valley tells the story of The Pynk, a strip club in the Mississippi Delta owned by nonbinary character Uncle Clifford (Annan). In episode seven of the Starz series’ second season, Clifford is in jeopardy of losing the club, and reflects in a montage on all the years that The Pynk flourished and became an integral part of her family, while her grandmother Ernestine (Loretta Devine) grows ever sicker with Covid.
“It was really difficult tapping back into this thing that we were all just coming out of, in terms of the pandemic, and the Covid of it all,” says Annan. “This is a way of life for us now, we’re all cool with it. Spoiler Alert: This story contains details from the final episode of FX’s The Patient on Hulu.
The Patient — a grim limited series about psychotherapist Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) who attempts to treat serial killer Sam Fortner (Domhnall Glesson) — has ended its run on Hulu. Here, creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields (The Americans) talk about what inspired their story and why it was important to end the tale the way they did.
Deadline: There’s a moment in the second to last episode where Sam looks at a video on YouTube of a serial killer. I’m wondering if something like that happened with you guys, which spawned this idea to begin with. Did it start with something like that?
Joe Weisberg: As I recall, we started talking about that video, which I think Joel had seen years ago. Just the idea about a serial killer who was...

"Successful therapy requires a safe environment, without anything like fear hanging over every session." FX on Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a very creepy, intriguing mini-series titled The Patient, from TV creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. This plays a lot like a feature film, but in the streaming era now they're just cutting it up into a few episodes and debuting it as a mini-series instead. "He's been held captive by a serial killer who wants his help." Uh oh, this sounds discomforting. A psychotherapist who recently lost his wife, finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer with an unusual request – to curb his homicidal urges. Steve Carell co-stars as the therapist, who is also struggling with understanding himself at this point in his life; Domhnall Gleeson co-stars as his patient Sam, who can't seem to control his murderous tendencies. The cast features Linda Emond, Laura Niemi,...

After a post-“Office” hiatus from the small screen, Steve Carell’s TV comeback continues to boom. His hit Apple TV+ drama “The Morning Show” was recently renewed for a third season, but before that, he’ll next be seen in “The Patient,” a new miniseries from “The Americans” showrunners Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg.
The series, which was produced by FX but will stream exclusively on Hulu, is a new riff on the “Misery” formula, starring Carell as a therapist who finds himself held hostage by an obsessive young man who forces the doctor to treat his dark thoughts. In addition to Carrell, the show stars Domhnall Gleeson, Linda Emond, David Alan Grier, Laura Niemi, Andrew Leeds, Alex Rich, and Amy Handelman.
According to FX’s official synopsis, “The Patient” is “a psychological thriller from the minds of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg (‘The Americans’) about a therapist, Alan Strauss...

The upcoming FX limited series “The Patient” has cast Alex Rich in a recurring role, Variety has learned exclusively.
Rich joins previously announced series leads Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson as well as cast members Linda Emond, Laura Niemi, and Andrew Leeds in the series, which hails from “The Americans” duo Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields.
In the half-hour series, a psychotherapist (Carell) finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer (Gleeson) with an unusual request: curb his homicidal urges. But unwinding the mind of this man while also dealing with the waves of his own repressed troubles creates a journey perhaps as treacherous as his captivity.
Rich previously appeared in the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “Glow” in the role of Florian, the butler and best friend of Sebastian “Bash” Howard. He is also known for playing a young Pablo Picasso in the Nat Geo series “Genius: Picasso,” with Antonio Banderas playing the elder Picasso.

Genius: Picasso marks Alex Rich’s first leading role in dramatic series. During Deadline’s Awardsline screening and Q&A for the Emmy Award-winning National Geographic series, Rich joked that he wasn’t intimidated at all when playing a younger version of the legendary artist. Then he admitted that for a first leading role of this scale, it was a lot to take in.
“Not only do you have a real person — and an icon at that — you have Antonio [Banderas] who is an incredibly gifted actor; you have a time period, accent and a first season that was nominated for 10 Emmys,” he said. “No stress in that!”
But based on his performance as young Picasso to Banderas’ old Picasso, Rich stepped into the role with impressive gravitas which has led to three Emmy nominations for the NatGeo drama including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie,...

To create infamous cult leaders (“American Horror Story: Cult”), a legendary painter (“Genius: Picasso”), a world-renowned designer (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) and the alter-egos of 1930s Hollywood (“The Last Tycoon”) — not to mention the return of one of the most beloved characters in television (Kyle MacLachlan’s FBI agent Dale Cooper in “Twin Peaks”) — the challenges in non-prosthetic makeup were equal parts honoring history and creating a legacy.

Antonio Banderas is a natural to play Pablo Picasso: They both hail from the same hometown in Spain, Malaga, and the actor grew up learning all about the hometown hero painter. But that’s partly why he shied away from the role for so long: The sense of responsibility was overwhelming, Banderas told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast.
“It’s related to the fact that I was born in the city where this guy was born,” he said. “I have a certain fear. It was not until I had someone like [‘Genius: Picasso’ executive producer] Ron Howard, who is a person I admire and respect very much as a producer for television… When you’re doing a biopic you need credibility.”
That’s especially true when you want to do your hometown proud.

A version of this story about Antonio Banderas was first published in the Miniseries/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
When “Genius” producer Kenneth Biller went to the Spanish town of Málaga to visit Antonio Banderas, he quickly learned the hierarchy. The Andalusian coastal city, he was told on his way in from the airport, has two local heroes who are particularly esteemed by the town in which they were born.
“They explained to me, in Spanish, ‘El primero is Picasso,'” Biller said. “‘El segundo is Antonio.'”
And No. 2 played No. 1. In “Genius: Picasso,” Banderas takes on a role that had long haunted him, and one he’d spent years avoiding, of the protean artist who cast a huge shadow in his hometown, where he grew up during the reign of dictator Francisco Franco.
“Picasso was enormous in Málaga,” Banderas said. “We didn’t have many heroes.

The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are used to being underestimated. As depicted in Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive’s series, the troupe of spandexed warriors was born in a dingy garage when women who couldn’t find a place elsewhere finally discovered support, comfort and even creative inspiration in one another. It tackled a setup familiar to most anyone who’s seen a sports movie — the scrappy underdogs clawing their way to success despite everyone’s doubts — through a distinctly feminine lens. With brash snarls and tender wit, “Glow” reveals the power of women banding together in defiance of low expectations to make something spectacular out of nothing.
Still, over the course of the first season, some of the storylines and characters struggled to break out of their prescribed boxes. It took several episodes for disdainful director Sam (Marc Maron) and enthusiastic playboy Bash (Chris Lowell) to reveal signs of more depth.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for program nominations (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups.) Unlike the Oscars, Emmy voters do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Last year that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.

They say you always remember your first time. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Rachel Bloom was appropriately smutty as she reflected on learning that her show had been picked up to series by The CW.
Bloom and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna, speaking on TheWrap’s Outstanding Showrunner Comedy Panel Tuesday night, shared some words of wisdom from the late, great comedy writer Jerry Belson: “In Hollywood, you almost never get to come.”
For Bloom and McKenna, Belson’s expression means that any victory or milestone doesn’t arrive as excitement, but relief after countless hours of work and effort.

“You know those orgasms you have where you’re like, I think I came? I no longer want the sex, so I think I came,” Bloom told TheWrap executive editor Tim Molloy in blunt terms.

When four Emmy contenders came together to talk about TV comedy, it was inevitable the subject would turn to the racist tweet that cost Roseanne Barr her sitcom. “Dear White People” star Logan Browning summarized the situation.
“She messed up, man,” Browning said. “It sucks because there’s a lot of people whose jobs are riding on that.”
“Silicon Valley” star Martin Starr, “Loudermilk” star Ron Livingston and “The Good Place” star Kristen Bell rounded out TheWrap’s Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress in a Comedy Panel, held Wednesday night at the Landmark Theater in Los Angeles.

All the actors said comedies can shine a light on difficult subjects. But Browning stressed there’s a big difference between saying something on a scripted TV show, and sounding off on social media.

At first glance, there’s no similarities between “Claws,” “Legion,” “The Alienist,” “This Is Us” and “Black Mirror” episode “U.S.S. Callister.” The challenges the actors and showrunners faced on these dramas were often miles apart, despite most of them being lumped into the same Emmys categories.
But in talking at TheWrap’s Emmy actors panel at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles Thursday night, Niecy Nash, Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Brühl, Chrissy Metz and Cristin Milioti each explained why these dramatic roles pushed Hollywood to think of them differently.
“The industry was like, ‘No, pumpkin, you’re funny, and that’s what you do.’ It took me a very long time to invite them to see me how I saw myself,” “Claws” star Niecy Nash told TheWrap’s Steve Pond. “I couldn’t get into certain rooms because they were like, ‘oh no, we know what she does.'...

Expectations were high when Dakota Fanning started shooting “The Alienist.” After nearly 10 years of failing to adapt Caleb Carr’s crime novel as a feature film, TNT ultimately made a major investment to turn it into a limited series. She and her co-stars Luke Evans and Daniel Bruhl appeared at TNT’s upfronts presentation last year, only to be greeted with a trailer of the material they had been shooting just days earlier.
“Everybody’s taking this very seriously and expecting a lot of it,” Fanning told TheWrap’s Matt Donnelly as part of TheWrap’s Outstanding Limited Series Panel at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles on Tuesday. “But everyone individually was expecting a lot of themselves and pushing themselves to do their best.”
But shooting a limited series posed a new challenge for Fanning, one her fellow panelists could relate to.

Fair to say, Antonio Banderas is the best thing about National Geographic’s second “Genius” series, “Picasso.” Born in Picasso’s home town in Malaga, Spain, 57 years ago, Banderas has turned down many offers to play Picasso since his 20s. But he finally stopped running away from the bigger-than-life abstract painter, and agreed to play the older Picasso from his 40s through his death at age 91 in Mougins, France in 1973, surrounded by loved ones. “He realizes… ‘this is my best painting’,” said Banderas.
The 11-part series was filmed in Hungary over five months, with Banderas arriving on set in the wee hours to endure five hours of prosthetic makeup. “It was exhausting,” said Banderas, who enjoyed creating Picasso with showrunner Ken Biller, makeup designer Davina Lamont, and costume designer Sonu Mishra. Banderas refused to see dailies, and said he only watched the first episode. It made him feel too self-conscious.

“He was in love with Picasso and was tortured by his sexuality,” declares actor T.R. Knight about the real-life character of Max Jacob he plays in the limited series “Genius: Picasso.” In our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “He was very conflicted in that he was born into a middle class Jewish family and at the age of 33 had a vision of Jesus. Max was one of the first friends Pablo had when he moved to Paris. He was a poet, writer, painter, art critic.”
For the NatGeo program, Alex Rich portrays the famous painter as a younger man while Antonio Banderas plays the Spanish legend older. Others in these episodes include Clemence Posey, Poppy Delevingne, Robert Sheehan, Aisling Franciosi and Sebastian Roche.

This week’s Genius: Picasso closes with Dora Maar undergoing an intense electroshock therapy treatment after her romantic relationship with Pablo Picasso has, for all intents and purposes, ended. It shows the pattern of how Picasso affected and treated his lovers over time but especially Maar (Samantha Colley), who he considered more an equal in terms of intellect and talents than most of the other women in his life. The episode also shows older Picasso (Antonio Banderas) brazenly managing two love affairs between Maar and Francoise Gilot. The drama also weaves in footage of the younger Pablo (Alex Rich), who finds […]

For the first major role of his career, Alex Rich auditioned to play Pablo Picasso on his iPad. The video was sent to London and caught the attention of showrunner Ken Biller. After a Skype call with him, he then met in person with Fox, Imagine Entertainment and NatGeo before getting the part in what he calls a pretty “painless” process.

National Geographic Channel’s second foray into their beautifully conceived franchise of Genius focuses on Spaniard artist Pablo Picasso, the dark-eyed nonconformist who, to use vernacular, was a diminutive little s*** who blew away Europe during its most fractious period of 20th-century history. Picasso was a ripe pick for producers. A most prolific artist, it is estimated Picasso created 25,000+ works of art in his lifetime. Elegant and earthy at the same time, actor Antonio Banderas was the perfect casting choice to play Picasso (the younger version of the artist is played in flashbacks by Alex Rich) and fills the role […]

Catching the first season of National Geographic’s Genius—starring Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein—Golden Globe- and Emmy-nominated actor Antonio Banderas found what he considered “quality television,” not knowing at the time that the series from Ron Howard and Kenneth Biller would turn to Spanish painter Pablo Picasso for Season 2.
“It taught me a lot of things about somebody that I thought I knew a lot about. In reality, I knew nothing about [Einstein’s] personal life, which was very interesting because you picture scientists in a completely different way,” Banderas told Deadline today of his first impressions of the series.
Offered the part of Picasso by Howard and Biller, Banderas found himself conflicted. On the one-hand, Picasso was a life-long hero of the actor’s, an inspirational artist born in his own hometown of Málaga. On the other, Banderas wondered if attempting to portray the iconic Spanish painter would be a bridge too far.

On April 18 National Geographic announced the subject of the third season of its anthology series “Genius.” Author Mary Shelley, the woman behind “Frankenstein,” will follow scientist Albert Einstein and painter Pablo Picasso in the scripted series about great thinkers and creators.
Shelley will be the oldest of the “Genius” subjects thus far. She was born in 1797 and died in 1851, before either Einstein or Picasso was born. She was the daughter of philosopher William Godwin and women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft. She was also the second wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley, a famous Romantic poet. She will be the first woman profiled by the Nat Geo series.

What is the role of an artist in a time of international crisis? Are they bound to use their platform to speak up, either through their work or other means? Or should they remain silent, stuck in their lane and apolitical?
The second season of National Geographic’s anthology “Genius” takes a hard stand for the former. The limited series, which followed Albert Einstein’s life last season, turns its gaze to Spanish painter Pablo Picasso in the late 1930s. Fascism is on the rise, and the curators of Paris’ Exposition Universelle want Picasso to create something on a giant, wall-sized canvas at the expo. But they don’t want just any Picasso painting — they want something that will speak to this moment, to the fear of creeping Nazism across Europe.
“The threat is enormous, so the picture must be enormous, so as to move the people,” one of the curators says.
