After the adaptation of Stephen King's detective story Mr. Mercedes, which was praised by both fans and critics, another adaptation of the book from the Bill Hodges series has been released. The fact that television producers have begun to turn to the author's rather unusual works is a trend to be excited about. Both Mr. Mercedes and the 2020 series The Outsider are primarily detective stories, not horror.
King's works in this genre haven't yet become overgrown with self-repeats – that's why watching these adaptations is much more fascinating than seeing how poor people get lost in the tall grass or pets rising from the dead.
What is The Outsider About?
According to the plot of The Outsider, the body of a brutally murdered schoolboy is found in a small town. All evidence points to coach Terry Maitland, a seemingly respectable man who bears little resemblance to a brutal killer.

Richard Price wasn't exactly the most obvious choice to adapt Stephen King's 2018 book "The Outsider" into a TV mini-series. Far from a novice in this area, Price had already adapted novels like "The Color of Money" and even his own books "Clockers" and "Freedomland" into films. But his speciality had always been crime thrillers and mysteries that pit their leads against firmly human horrors, rather than fantastical foes like the creature at the heart of King's story.
In Price's hands, "The Outsider" is less "It" and more "True Detective," despite the ancient child-killing entity at the heart of its plot. It's also a ghost story, if not in the typical sense. In a change from King's original novel, the show's protagonist, detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), is haunted by the death of his young son from cancer some years prior to the series' events. As Price saw it, this...

Here’s a fun little look behind the curtain. Back when HBO announced the release date of Richard Price’s atmospheric Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider, Den of Geek ran the news as an article, as one does.
Shortly after the article went live, representatives from HBO reached out to clarify that they weren’t categorizing the project as a “miniseries” as many outlets (and none other than Wikipedia itself) had reported but rather a traditional series. It seemed clear then that HBO had at least the possibility of multiple seasons in mind when it greenlit the show. After all, why wouldn’t they? Stephen King adaptations always tend to do well and The Outsider boasted a solid cast and an intriguing concept true crime-meets- the-supernatural concept
The Outsider would then go on to pull off 10 good episodes, receive modest-to-excellent critical acclaim, kill it in the ratings, and drive online...

There will be no second season of The Outsider at HBO.
The premium cabler has canceled the series, which is based on Stephen King's novel.
Despite exhausting the source material during The Outsider Season 1, work had already begun on scripts for a second season, but HBO is not moving forward with it.
Deadline confirmed that HBO is not pursuing a second season, but there is a glimmer of hope.
The Outsider production company MRC is shopping the series to other outlets, meaning that it could pop up somewhere else down the line.
“We enjoyed our collaboration with [executive producers] Richard [Price], Jason [Bateman], Andrew [Bernstein] and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.

Exclusive: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market.
The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.

After months of silence, we now have confirmation about the future of HBO's The Outsider.
Stephen King has confirmed that The Outsider Season 2 is in the works and that he has already read some of the scripts.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer of the novel the series is based on has said that the scripts are "really great" and that they have a "real spooky paranormal element."
King was speaking to the outlet about the character of Holly Gibney, who was played by Cynthia Erivo on The Outsider but was played by Justine Lupe on Mr. Mercedes.
King noted when asked who played the role better than Lupe had an unfair advantage because she got to play the role for three seasons.
"Cynthia may get that time, because there's going to be a second season of The Outsider as soon as they can get the production going.

Photo: 'The Outsider'/HBO Richard Price’s new horror series – 'The Outsider' – brings a new perspective to adapted Stephen King content. The new horror series based on the book of the same name, premiered on HBO this January and has been a hot topic ever since. A series surrounding a strange murder, 'The Outsider' follows the investigation unit in a friendly Georgia town, as they run into the supernatural, unprecedented evidence, and outrageous theories. What once seemed like a straightforward case, quickly becomes a tangled web. So what makes this different from any other Stephen King adaptation? This series is driven by a group of characters so different, yet so similar. Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) is the little league coach everyone knows and adores. Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) is a trustworthy cop who is finding his way after the death of his son. And Holly Gibney...

Jason Bateman pulled off a shocking Emmy upset last year when he dethroned “Game of Thrones” in the Drama Directing category for his work on “Ozark.” Now he’s back in hopes of scoring his first win as an actor. Bateman competes in Drama Actor for “Ozark” but also has a thrilling entry in the Drama Guest Actor category for his memorable role as doomed Terry Maitland on HBO’s “The Outsider.” In his efforts to claim that victory, he has submitted the episode “Fish in a Barrel” for consideration.
Terry Maitland is a beloved family man in his town. As he coaches the local little league game, officers storm across the baseball diamond and place him under arrest for the gruesome murder of a young boy. Having racked up dual Emmy acting nominations for “The Outsider” in Best Drama Guest Actor and “Ozark” in Best Drama Actor, Jason Bateman is primed to pull off the highly specific thing Ann Dowd did three years ago: win a main acting race for a show nominated for Best Drama Series while also competing in a guest acting category as a show’s only bid.
In 2017, Dowd double-dipped for “The Leftovers” in drama guest actress and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in drama supporting actress, triumphing for the latter. While her victory for “Handmaid’s” was part of the Hulu series’ sweep – it collected eight statuettes, including Best Drama Series – her nom for “The Leftovers’” was the HBO series’ lone Emmy bid in its entire three-season run, thus a clear manifestation of support for the veteran actress (who was celebrating her first two career noms that year).

Jason Bateman, reigning Emmy winner for director in a drama series, is a double threat on the acting side this year. He landed his third consecutive nomination in the Lead Actor In a Drama series category for his starring role as Martin ‘Marty’ Byrde on Netflix’s Ozark. Additionally, he is nominated as a Guest Actor In a Drama Series for his recurring role as Terry Maitland on HBO’s The Outsider.
This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, who is facing Bateman in the actor in a drama series field, also is a double acting nominee. In addition to his fourth consecutive Lead Actor in a Drama Series nom for playing Randall Pearce on NBC’s This Is Us (he won the trophy in 2017), Brown is nominated in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his arc as Reggie on Season 3 of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs.

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, “The Outsider” is a drama series that follows a seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy. When 11-year-old Frankie Peterson’s body is found in the Georgia woods, police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) sets out to investigate — with eyewitnesses and physical evidence pointing to Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), a popular high school teacher, Little League coach, doting husband and father. Think twice before betting against Ben Mendelsohn.
An esteemed actor respected by peers and audiences alike, Mendelsohn is one of those actors who digs deep into a role, and when he is given one as complex as Det. Ralph Anderson on the Stephen King horror/crime thriller series “The Outsider,” you can count on the Australian actor to be back in the Emmy hunt.

It was for his performance as Danny Rayburn, the black sheep of a family riddled with secrets in the Netflix series “Bloodline.” (Mendelsohn also received a nomination the prior year for the same role.)

Following a supernatural killer who can be anyone it wants is a recipe for disaster.
That much came to light on The Outsider Season 1 Episode 8 when Ralph, Holly, Andy, and Yunis hit the road to track down Claude.
It was a pro-active move to vouch for Claude should El Cuco don his skin and start a rampage, and one that the heroes will not forget any time soon.
While the first half of "Foxhead" was slow because it was setting things up for the second half, it was a successful way to amp up the stakes as the characters ventured to a new town.
Preventing Claude from being arrested from a crime he did not commit was a good move, if only because when El Cuco tried to kidnap a young boy, he was ruled innocent.
The revelation was enough to push Ralph to believe what Holly has been saying all along.

Can a gritty crime drama really ask viewers to believe in the boogeyman? “The Outsider” is about to find out.

There's a traitor in Holly's orbit, and she doesn't even know it.
The Outsider Season 1 Episode 5 pushed Holly and Andy closer together with Andy staying overnight in the hotel room.
I can't even begin to stress how stupid it was of Holly not to scour the room before leaving to make sure there was nothing tied to the case that she did not want anyone else to know.
Holly is a thorough person who leaves no stone unturned when she's investigating, and I refuse to believe she wouldn't have thought of all the way things could go wrong in her head.
With Andy, it could be a case of curiosity got the better of him, but it's also possible he's been using her all along to follow his investigation, something that would allow him to get some recognition.
If the latter is the case, then he's played Holly very well.

HBO’s The Outsider is one tough nut to crack, something Holly Gibney quickly learns on this week’s episode. While she scores some much-needed time with key sources of the spooky saga, she treads water trying to connect the dots. Is the legendary El Coco the missing link? Let’s take it from the top.
We’re treated to a dreamy scene of the now-dead inmate courting a nice woman over a lovely breakfast. Cut to present, Holly tells Anderson the man’s name was Heath Hofsteader, and he worked at the senior center where Terry Maitland’s father lives.

It seems as if every procedural type program has a scene in which someone does some Internet sleuthing, usually through some ridiculously named program like Searchalot or Doctor Sleuth. These scenes, by and large, are never interesting. Everyone searches online for things a dozen times a day or more, it's something that's more fun to do than watch. Making that remotely interesting is one of the most difficult tasks for any director, and yet as Holly sits in the tub, searching El Coco and various other old-world bogeymen, it's not boring: it’s riveting.
The camera watches Holly, transfixed, as she clicks through an impressive array of folk art monsters with wide, absorbing eyes; it's a greatest hits of grandmothers’ nightmares.

Detective Anderson may be on mandatory leave, but that doesn’t mean his wheels have stopped churning. The third episode of HBO’s The Outsider raises more questions, while adding one genius, yet highly unorthodox Pi to the mix — hello, Holly Gibney!
At the top, local police swarm the barn, bagging-and-tagging evidence they don’t know what to do with. Cherokee City gets wind and sends Officer Crankypants Jack to check it out, but as usual, he’s super salty. He gets liquored up before driving to the barn to do his job, which honestly, is pretty on brand for him.

The Outsider Episode 3
From her introduction, the dedicated detective Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo) is something to behold. She's strange, and compulsively watchable, and in possession of some compelling traits. Somewhere between superstitious, savant, genius, and the autism spectrum, Holly falls somewhere roughly between Sherlock Holmes and Monk in her list of eccentricities. But there's something about the character that is more than just a collection of quirks.
That's due in no small part to the incredible performance by Cynthia Erivo. For those unfamiliar, Erivo picked up three-fourths of the vaunted Egot thanks to a much-lauded turn in the most recent Broadway revival of The Color Purple, and she has two chances to capture the Oscar portion of the award at...

“The Outsider” is as much a true crime story as it is the kind of chilling horror tale that Stephen King has mastered. The HBO series, adapted from the author’s 2018 novel, might not fully lean into the horror that defined recent King adaptions, such as “It,” — but that was part of the appeal for series star and executive producer Jason Bateman, who also directed its first two episodes.
“I’m not a huge horror fan or into scare jumps, gore, or slashers (but) I really love dread, thrillers, tension and all that stuff,” Bateman said during a “The Outsider” panel at the Television Critics Association 2020 Winter Press Tour. “I was really excited that this story lived in more of a Stephen King ‘The Shining’ world, as opposed to some of his other great stories that are more in the frightening, scare, shock world.”

Just a day after Stephen King came under fire for Tweeting that he “would never consider diversity in matters of art. Only quality. It seems to me that to do otherwise would be wrong” in response to this year’s Oscar nominees not being inclusive for women or people of color, HBO presented a panel for the latest adaptation of one of his works, “The Outsider.”
King was not in attendance — he had never been scheduled to appear, even prior to sending the tweet — but actor Cynthia Erivo, who received two Oscar nominations this year, responded to the question about diversity’s place in not only the art but also the business of film and televison.
“Hopefully more work gets seen by people who are making really good work, and I feel like this year we had a flurry of beautiful pieces by people who are diverse in nature — black women,...

Stephen King's 2018 book The Outsider is HBO's newest thriller/horror series. As many of King's books are, The Outsider is a story of dark, supernatural horror packaged as a cultural critique of American society. This time, King's characters embattle false accusations, which lead to the fear and blind rage that instigate an aggressive mob mentality around communities. If you are a King fan, you will enjoy reading his latest work, because it is filled with his usual storytelling quirks and practices, like a mystery monster and several gasp-inducing twists. The book is also based in a modern context, with references to the current political climate, which will make for a good series.

Murder mysteries have been done to death on the small screen, and thanks to the boom of streaming, they are more prevalent than ever.
The Outsider differs in many aspects to the others, putting a fresh and exciting spin on the genre.

These types of shows generally build towards revealing the killer over a meandering arc with various red herrings, but The Outsider offered up the suspect and evidence blended with a nice dose of angsty drama, as well as some mystery.

The latest Stephen King TV adaptation, The Outsider, premiered Sunday on HBO with two gruesome episodes that set up the novel’s mind-bending mystery, while raising a gazillion questions. For those who haven’t read the book, the story revolves around the investigation into the horrific murder of a local child and “the mysterious force” surrounding the case. This was a meaty double-scoop of episodes, so let’s get to it.
Scene Of The Crime | We open with a man and his dog casually strolling through a park until the pup catches a sniff that points him toward a grotesque discovery.

The first 30 or so minutes of The Outsider, HBO’s atmospheric new limited series based on the 2018 Stephen King novel, play out like a familiar slow-burn crime drama: a small-town cop (Ben Mendelsohn), haunted by a recent tragedy in his own past, investigates a brutal child murder that’s shaken his community to its core. What's not clear initially is how this story could possibly sustain multiple episodes, since the case seems to be open-and-shut. Beloved local Little League coach Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman, who also executive produces and directs some episodes) is the murderer, according to multiple ...

Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, The Outsider centers on a community overcome with grief when one of their children is found brutally murdered.
It's not King's first flirtation with crime, and like most of his work, there is an otherworldly bent to what's happening.
Although I didn't finish the novel, from what I've seen so far, it's a faithful adaptation. And with skillful filming and directing and a talented cast, it's a lot easier to pick up on the expected sinister undertones.
Ben Mendelsohn plays detective Ralph Anderson, the man in charge of picking up the pieces for his community in light of the slaying of an 11-year-old boy whose body is found in the woods near their Georgia town.
It seems like a cut and dry case when witnesses, video footage, and forensic evidence place local teacher and beloved baseball coach, Terry Maitland, at the scene.

In one way, adapting Stephen King’s 2018 novel “The Outsider” into a 10-episode series for HBO was old hat for writer and producer Richard Price. He has adapted his own novels for screen in the past, as well as projects including “The Color of Money” and “The Night Of.” But in another, taking on this project allowed the veteran industry professional a chance to achieve a childhood dream.
“It’s this combination of a police procedural that takes this twist into the supernatural without ever quite leaving the police procedural world. The easiest thing for me to write is the police world and ever since I was a kid, I’d always wanted to write a ghost story,” he tells Variety.
“The Outsider” is an almost 600-page tome that starts out seeming like a regular detective novel. Small town detective Ralph Anderson (played in the HBO series by Ben Mendelsohn...

At its core, “The Outsider” is a story about belief. Stephen King’s 2018 novel focuses on a small town detective whose job requires him to find concrete answers to real-world mysteries, and then hands him an impossible case he can’t explain — not without considering supernatural possibilities.
King asks the same from his readers, to believe in the unbelievable, except the novel falls spectacularly short is in justifying its own request. Perhaps the Master of Horror has been writing about ghosts and demons for so long that he no longer feels the need to convince anyone that believing in the boogeyman is a reasonable, rational choice, but the book tries to combine two, diametrically opposed genres — speculative fiction and true crime — without respecting the foundation of both.

Midway through HBO’s new mystery/horror hybrid The Outsider, a character buys a half-dozen lamps at a hardware store, takes them out to the woods, and dumps them in a field. The series doesn’t make room for humor, but this is a very funny moment, albeit an unintentional one. It’s as if the people making The Outsider — an impressive group that includes Richard Price (The Wire, The Night Of) as lead writer and Emmy winner Jason Bateman as lead director — want to make abundantly clear what contempt...

Of Stephen King’s recent books, The Outsider is notable for its blending of traditional Kingian horror with the mystery elements of his love of detective fiction. The novel was only released in 2018, but is already heading to HBO in January as an adaptation starring Ben Mendelsohn and Jason Bateman. In fact, the network have now released the first full trailer for the 10-episode series, which you can catch above, providing an intriguing look at a show that will presumably exploit pay cable’s content freedoms to bring The Outsider‘s gruesome story to life.
We get a fairly comprehensive look at the series’ main mystery here, that of how Little League coach Terry Maitland (Bateman) can be arrested for the gruesome murder of an 11-year-old boy, while appearing to have a rock-solid alibi. HBO has unveiled the first trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider,” the latest Stephen King horror novel to be adapted for the small screen.
The 10-episode series, which is set to hit HBO January 12, will follow police detective Ralph Anderson as he investigates the grisly murder of an 11-year-old. Although authorities quickly make an arrest, the police soon discover contradictory evidence, suggesting their prime suspect (Jason Bateman) was in two places at the same time. Though the case appears simple at first, the show’s trailer suggests that events soon take a more sinister — perhaps even supernatural — turn.
Although investigators looking into a child’s murder might seem like typical whodunit crime drama fare, the trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider” makes clear that the limited series will retain King’s signature horror flairs. You might be used to seeing Jason Bateman play the sarcastic straight man, like in Arrested Development or Game Night. But the Emmy-winning actor and director is also ace at portraying characters with dark and exceedingly creepy secrets, like in Ozark, The Gift, and HBO's upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider.
In the series, which draws its story from King's 2018 novel, Bateman plays beloved family man and little league coach Terry Maitland who is accused of raping and slaughtering a young boy in his small town when Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) finds his prints all over the murder scene. But, in addition to Terrence's insistence that he's innocent, the police start finding striking inconsistencies surrounding the crime that just aren't adding up. Did Terry really commit such a heinous act? Or is someone - or something - else responsible?

HBO's TV adaptation of Stephen King novel The Outsider showcases a crime drama with a supernatural horror twist.
Stephen King’s novel The Outsider is becoming a drama series at HBO, which has given the adaptation a 10-episode order.
The story of The Outsider puts a mind-blowingly monstrous twist on traditional murder fiction. Here, police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) fields an investigation in the fictional Oklahoma town of Flint City that upends the local populace when a well-liked local man, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), is arrested for the shockingly malicious murder of an 11-year-old boy. While a mountain of evidence – including DNA and fingerprints – make the case seem open-and-shut, Maitland vehemently swears his innocence; an idea that gains momentum when his alibi – of being out of town at a conference – checks out, leading the investigation to a potentially supernatural turn.
