One of the very few theatrical releases in the very early days of the pandemic, Derrick Borte’s Unhinged managed to make $44 million at the box office at a time when audiences weren’t exactly eager to get back into theaters, the film offering an action-packed, explosively violent bit of exploitation with Russell Crowe as the title character, a road rage-fueled madman.
Four years later, Derrick Borte and Russell Crowe are reteaming for a new action-thriller titled Bear Country, but the bad news here is that it’s not a Russell Crowe vs. Bears movie.
Deadline details, “Crowe will play ageing but formidable club owner, Manco Kapak who has been robbed by a masked gunman. Now, his aspirations of selling his club and riding off into the sunset alongside his girlfriend appear more distant than ever.

We can’t stop here! This is Bear Country! While Russell Crowe passes the Gladiator torch to Paul Mescal for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor is getting behind the bar for Derrick Borte’s upcoming action-thriller Bear Country. The project marks another collaboration between Crowe and Borte after teaming up for Unhinged, a thriller starring Crowe as an unstable man obsessed with a woman after a spat of road rage.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Bear Country finds Crowe playing an aging but redoubtable club owner, Manco Kapak, whom a masked gunman robs. When the robbery sidelines his retirement plans and his girlfriend grows distant, his aspirations to live a quiet life shatter like glass breaking against a hardwood floor. As cartel bosses harass Manco and a young status seeker aims to purchase the club, Kapak must decide how to show them who the boss is.

Jim Gaffigan is a funny stand-up comedian. I enjoy his style of comedy, and he’s been a part of some fun comedies over the years, but he’s taking a surprising turn in his latest film project, American Dreamer.
This is the kind of film and role I never thought I’d see Gaffigan in. He plays a “down on his luck rideshare driver who makes extra cash chauffeuring a low level drug dealer around town finds himself in a serious financial bind and decides to kidnap the dealer’s child.”
This is a very dramatic and dark thriller, and this first trailer for it is pretty intense. While it’s hard to imagine Gaffigan in a role like this and take him seriously in it, it looks like he actually does a decent job in this trailer.

Robbie Jones (“Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”), Isabel Arraiza (“Elementary”), Alejandro Hernandez (“New Amsterdam”), and Tammy Blanchard co-star in the movie.
Borte (“The Joneses”) directed from a script he co-wrote with Daniel Forte. The film was produced by Scott Lochmus for Storyland Pictures, in association with the Virginia Film Office and Old Dominion University. Jonathan Gray, Mary Vernieu, Xyz Films, and Sugar Studios executive produced.

Exclusive: Here’s the first look at American Dreamer, the new thriller directed by London Town helmer Derrick Borte and starring Jim Gaffigan. The pic from Storyland Pictures is having its world premiere Thursday at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
Gaffigan, who made his bones as a stand-up comic, takes another jump into more dramatic fare. In this movie (and especially in this exclusive clip — don’t turn it up too loud at work) you almost can’t tell that’s Gaffigan playing Cam, a down-on-his-luck rideshare driver who makes extra cash chauffeuring a low-level drug dealer around town. He finds himself in a serious financial bind and, amid growing desperation, decides to kidnap the dealer’s child.
Robbie Jones, Tammy Blanchard, Alejenadro Hernandez, Eric Hill Jr and Isabel Arraiza co-star.
