Studiocanal is collaborating with Sixteen Films’ Rebecca O’Brien and Morena Film’s Juan Gordon to develop a series created by longtime Ken Loach scribe Paul Laverty and to be directed by Spain’s Iciar Bollaín.
The drama series will be the first for both Laverty and Bollaín after writing and directing respectively 19 and nine feature films, including collaborations on Bollaín’s multi-prized “Yuli,” “The Olive Tree” and “Even the Rain,” movies that established her as one of Spain’s top film directors.
Over the last few years, Cannes’ MipTV trade fair, once a strict TV silo, is now ever more MipFilm. Signs of an ever-building crossover between the two sectors look indeed to make up one of the hallmarks of this year’s event.
In multiple different moves, iconic film talent is plunging ever more into series.

Germany has been a source of shows for the international market for decades, but with series like “Deutschland 83” in 2015, and “Babylon Berlin” and “Dark” in 2017, the bar was raised and the sense of what constituted German drama shifted, and international buyers took note.
One of them was Christian Vesper, who bought “Deutschland 83” when he was drama chief at Sundance TV. Vesper remembers that at that time it was unheard of for a U.S. channel to buy a German drama. “That was an outlier. It was a really, really, really, really hard thing to get approval on, because it was a German show. Who buys a German show for American television?”
One of the issues was that German broadcasters and the producers who supplied them primarily focused on the local audience. “The difficulty was that they have such a big domestic market that they haven’t felt that...

German sellers returning to Cannes’s Mipcom TV mart will be packing a wide selection of domestic and international TV fare heavy on high-end crime and historical series.
With a market that has become increasingly open to different formats, sales companies see good opportunities for diverse offerings.
“Crime is still the most in- demand genre in the market, as well as action,” says Julia Weber, head of international sales and acquisitions at Munich-based Global Screen. “But whatever genre you look at, the main driver remains the story. It needs to be compelling and speak to the audience.”
Weber adds that more and more historical dramas are also being produced, underscoring “an increasing need for series that are rather escapist and that cater to audiences in the post-lockdown world.”
Global Screen’s six-part “The Palace” is a prime example, she adds. Produced by Constantin Television for Zdf and directed by Uli Edel,...

Global Screen has acquired Christian Alvart’s Bank Lady - the true story of Germany’s first female bank-robber
Global Screen has picked up worldwide distribution rights to Bank Lady, the true story of Germany’s first female bank-robber, who carried out 19 armed robberies in the 1960s.
Produced by Syrreal Entertainment, the feature is directed by Christian Alvart, whose 2005 film Antibodies about a fugitive serial killer sold widely.
Bank Lady tells the story of Gisela Werler, a factory worker from Hamburg, who becomes notorious throughout Germany as a female bank robber. Thanks to the various disguises, wigs and film star sunglasses she wears during her heists, the media portray her as a cunning and sexy bandit. Together with a passionate love affair, Gisela gets reckless, taking ever-greater risks, with police inspector Fisher close on her heels.
”Bank Lady is a perfect blend of authentic cops-and-robbers drama and love story. Catch Me If You Can meets Bonnie and Clyde,” said...
