Neal Mohan wants the Television Academy to watch more YouTube videos. The CEO of the Google-owned platform recently penned a guest column in The Hollywood Reporter. His thesis was a simple one: The work creators are doing is excellent enough to deserve Emmy consideration.
“Creators are defining a new era of entertainment,” Mohan wrote. “And they deserve the same acclaim as other creative professionals.”
Mohan supported his case by citing several of YouTube’s biggest channels. He sees the Sean Evans-hosted interview series Hot Ones as a show that is “reinventing” its genre, and he celebrated Good Mythical Morning hosts Rhett & Link for the “speed of their creativity and their strategies to respond to viewer feedback.” Michelle Khare, the creator behind Challenge Accepted, is another YouTube-based personality who is “pushing the envelope,” according to Mohan.
Why is YouTube so keen on the idea of the TV and creator worlds colliding?...

It’s time a creator won an Emmy.
You might not expect MrBeast to stand on the same stage as Jeremy Allen White. But if you think creators are just recording vlogs from their bedrooms, then I have some big news. Creators have writers’ rooms, production teams, and business strategies. They’re developing programming that’s not just popular and relevant – it’s breaking boundaries.
Creators are defining a new era of entertainment. And they deserve the same acclaim as other creative professionals.
Some might argue that broadening the Primetime Emmys to include consideration of creators would detract from its storied history or lessen its cultural significance. But recognizing the work of creators is the best way for the Television Academy to continue its legacy of honoring modern culture, while also building a bridge to the next generation of viewers.
When the Academy first met in 1946, television was still a new medium.

The stunt took weeks of preparation. Building a tank. Training with freedivers and magicians. Developing the filming schedule.
The end result of the effort, a new episode of YouTube star Michelle Khare’s series Challenge Accepted in which she attempted to recreate Harry Houdini’s deadliest trick, has since garnered more than 4.5 million views on YouTube.
The final product has a production quality that would rival what’s on “traditional” TV (in fact, magician David Blaine attempted a similar stunt for a 2006 primetime ABC special), but Khare produced the episode herself, for her YouTube audience.
“For Challenge Accepted because we release very infrequently — unlike a normal season of television, it’s about 10 to 15 episodes a year — and within each of those episodes, we are representing a unique community,” Khare says in an interview. “So for example, in the video where I attempted Harry Houdini’s deadliest magic trick, we’re...

Before she was the creator, writer, and star of the hit ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary, funnywoman Quinta Brunson was an employee at BuzzFeed and a contributor to the media company’s network of digital channels. Ahead of the long-awaited season three premiere of Abbott, Brunson returned to BuzzFeed alongside her castmates to complete one of the brand’s signature quizzes.
Brunson established herself on her personal channels on YouTube and Instagram before joining BuzzFeed in 2015. Through her regular appearances in the company’s YouTube videos — alongside other breakout stars like Safiya Nygaard, Michelle Khare, and The Try Guys — she unlocked new creative opportunities. In 2016, she created and starred in Broke, which was one of the first originals to launch on the service then known as YouTube Red. (It’s called YouTube Premium now.)

Fyi, Tubefilter has a podcast.
It’s hosted by our very own Joshua Cohen (that’s me) and Lauren Schnipper. Subscribe to Creator Upload on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
Last week, Whalar introduced a plan to build sprawling, members-only campuses dedicated to content creation. And, for just a second, it was 2012 again, and YouTube was getting ready to launch its first Space in London.
There’s a lot about Whalar’s initiative (called Lighthouse) that’s similar to Spaces. It too offers state-of-the-art production facilities–everything from soundproof video and podcast studios to editing bays–where creators and their teams can come and make high-quality content. This was the original idea for YouTube Spaces: that it would provide Hollywood-level sets and equipment for creators to upscale their content.

VidSummit is about to hold its tenth annual creator conference, and instead of heading to its usual location in Los Angeles, it’s got new digs in Dallas that will double its attendee capacity.
Founded in 2014 by consultant Derral Eves, VidSummit brings together creators and other industry professionals for three days of programming focused on upping the ante across every aspect of content creation.
For the past five years, it’s sold out of all 1,500 spots at its old venue–a sign, Eves tells Tubefilter, that VidSummit has grown from “this hidden underground event” to something bigger, where “the top 1% of the people that are pushing the needle” can network and share strategies for growing their YouTube channels, TikTok accounts, and more.
This year, VidSummit is moving to Irving, a city just north of Dallas, to a venue that allows for 3,000 attendees. Eves expects it’ll sell out this year too.

It feels a little strange to say this in August, but the 2023 Streamy Awards are officially over, and they handed out a grand total of 50 awards to this year’s top creators.
This was the first year Tubefilter and dick clark productions held Streamys in the summertime, but the change of season didn’t mean everything changed: For the fourth time in a row, MrBeast took home Creator of the Year, and for the second time in a row, Kai Cenat snagged Streamer of the Year.
As for Show of the Year, that went to Michelle Khare and her daredevil series Challenge Accepted.
This year’s ceremony was hosted by MatPat, and featured dozens of presenters, including Dylan Mulvaney, Ryan Trahan, The Try Guys‘ Keith Habersberger and Zach Kornfeld, Smosh‘s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, TikTok Npc streamer Pinkydoll, Colin and Samir, Dream, Michelle Khare, Anna Sitar, Austin Creed,...

The 2023 Streamy Awards honored the best in content creation on social media and Dylan Mulvaney took the trophy for Breakout Creator.
“I’m really shocked because I thought the only award I’d ever win was maybe a Tony Award but now I’m a musical theater gal with a Streamy,” the social media star said while accepting her award Sunday at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
Mulvaney went viral after receiving backlash from conservative media over promoting Bud Light.
“532 days ago, I made a coming-out video that turned into my ‘Days of Girlhood’ series, and my life has been changed for the better,” she continued. “But on the flip side, there’s also been an extreme amount of transphobia and hate, and I know that my community is feeling it.”

Two days before the 2023 Streamy Awards, creator economy experts Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry uploaded a special conversation with some of the show’s nominees. The podcasting duo shared a round table with Cleo Abram, Ammar Kandil of Yes Theory, Michelle Khare, Zach King, and Ryan Trahan, all of whom discussed their experiences as online video professionals.
The conversation, dubbed “YouTube Mastermind,” offered insights from prominent figures in the creator ecosystem. The individuals who assembled at Colin and Samir’s roundtable weren’t just 2023 Streamy nominees. Four of them — Kandil, Khare, King, and Trahan — have taken home trophies at previous editions of the online video award show. (Full disclosure: Tubefilter co-produces the Streamys alongside dick clark productions.)
The wide-ranging conversation touched on many topics related to the creator lifestyle. The panelists discussed their daily lives, routines, and creative processes, while also identifying hurdles they had to overcome before making it big.

YouTube’s biggest ad innovation for 2023? It might be borrowing a well-worn page from old-fashioned linear TV.
At the YouTube Brandcast upfront event Wednesday in New York, execs announced the introduction of 30-second unskippable ads in top-performing YouTube content on TVs — you know, just like the commercials that have run on broadcast and cable networks for decades. YouTube also will start testing new “Pause Experiences” for YouTube on TV screens, showing an ad when viewers pause a video akin to the pause ads Hulu first bowed four years ago.
In their pitch to Madison Avenue types, YouTube execs also boasted of the streaming service’s massive reach: More than 150 million unique viewers in the U.S. watched YouTube and YouTube TV on televisions for the month of December 2022, according to Nielsen estimates. YouTube remains the No. 1 most-watched service on TV screens in America (across both streaming platforms and traditional TV...

A lot of us have picked up new hobbies while in quarantine, and Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson has just revealed hers to the world. The Oscar-winning star has started up a YouTube channel today, which she intends to employ for social activism, as a way of putting her “privilege and platform” to good use.
In her 21-minute long first video, Larson speaks about why she’s decided to use YouTube as her platform on which to speak out. She promised “deep conversations” in future vlogs, but teased that there will also be some “silly content” as she “expresses [her]self personally.”
“YouTube has been a place [where] I have learnt so much,” the Captain Marvel star says. “Whether it’s been how to use my printer or it’s been watching how to be a considerate activist… This is the place to talk about things that are important and that matter.

HBO Max has unveiled the premiere dates for its “second wave” of original programming.
Some of the standouts that have been dated include the four “Adventure Time” specials, which will be available from June 25, the Seth Rogen comedy feature “American Pickle,” coming August 6, and the Amy Schumer docuseries “Expecting Amy,” which the streaming service will birth July 9.
The WarnerMedia streamer is launching May 27 with a substantial library of content, and a few originals, headlined by the Anna Kendrick comedy “Love Life.” HBO Max’s jewel in the crown upon launch was supposed to be the “Friends” reunion special, however, the coronavirus production shutdown put paid to hopes that it would be ready on time. WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt recently told Variety that special will potentially be completed by the end of summer.

Following in the footsteps of The Try Guys, Safiya Nygaard, Michelle Khare, Chris Reinacher, Gaby Dunn and Allison Raskin, and others, another fleet of former BuzzFeed creators are branching off on their own.
A new digital production company dubbed Watcher Entertainment is slated to bow on Jan. 10, founded by Ryan Bergara, Steven Lim, and Shane Madej. Bergara is the creator and host of BuzzFeed Unsolved, a true crime series he created and co-hosts with Madej. Madej is also the creator and host of Ruining History, which chronicles funny moments in history. Lim, for his part, is the creator and host of Worth It, which stacks up similar items and services of varying price points. All told, the trio says that content created during their tenure at BuzzFeed has generated a combined 2 billion views.

HBO Max, the forthcoming streaming service contender to be launched by WarnerMedia this spring, is looking to diversify its content offer with two kid-friendly competition series headlined by digital natives.
BuzzFeed personality-turned-independent content creator Michelle Khare and Diy star Lauren Riihimaki (pictured above) are starring in two series -- titled Karma and Craftopia, respectively -- that are both aimed at child audiences. The series capitalize on each creator’s content expertise. Riihimaki, for instance, is one of the foremost Diy entrepreneurs on YouTube, whose tutorial channel has clocked 9 million subscribers to date. On her channel, with 1.6 million subscribers, Khare frequently challenges herself to different types of workouts and other physical tests.
Karma will see sixteen contestants aged 12 to 15 going off the grid to solve puzzles and overcome physical challenges, with players’ actions toward others also impacting the outcome of the game, Variety reports. Karma will serve to celebrate qualities like focus,...
