The last time Blackberry Smoke frontman Charlie Starr saw his longtime friend and bandmate Brit Turner was at Turner’s Atlanta home. The drummer, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2022, was under hospice care, but Starr had some rare good news to deliver.
“I told him our record was Number One,” Starr tells Rolling Stone. “And his eyes got really big. He had really stopped speaking at that point. [But] it was obvious to me he knew what I had told him.”

Blackberry Smoke’s Brit Turner endured a harrowing 2022, suffering a heart attack in August of that year and then undergoing brain surgery in November after a tumor was discovered during a routine Mri. Turner continued to battle glioblastoma (brain cancer) over the next couple years, until his death this past weekend at 57. Through it all, his strength and perseverance never faltered, especially as he continued to tour with Blackberry Smoke whenever he could.
Nowhere was Turner’s fortitude and love of music more clear than during his first show back with Blackberry Smoke on Nov.

Brit Turner, co-founding member and drummer of the southern rock band Blackberry Smoke, has died at the age of 57 following a battle with brain cancer.
“It is with the deepest sorrow that we inform everyone that our brother Brit Turner has moved on from this life,” Blackberry Smoke said in a statement released on Sunday evening. “If you had the privilege of knowing Brit on any level, you know he was the most caring, empathetic, driven and endearing person one could ever hope to meet. Brit was Blackberry Smoke’s True North, the compass that instituted the ideology that will continue to guide this band.”
Turner was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022 and underwent brain surgery. He continued to tour with the band throughout 2023, but in December, the band announced that he would be absent from their early 2024 tour dates. In his place, Blackberry Smoke tapped drummer Kent Aberle.

Blackberry Smoke wrapped up their spring Break It Down Tour, the band’s first-ever acoustic trek, on Sunday night at New York’s City Winery. In addition to stripped-down, wood-and-wire takes on staples from the Southern rock outfit’s extensive catalog, the group also used the relaxed format to offer select covers, including a run through the Grateful Dead’s “Althea.”
Seated casually, the band slipped right into the laid-back groove of the country-funk tune, originally found on the Dead’s 1980 album Go to Heaven. Blackberry Smoke lead singer/guitarist...
