Kieran, turn out the lights.
Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Since 2001, we’ve seen the rise of streaming music and TV, the decline of physical record sales, and the arrival of Adele, to name just a few massive cultural upheavals. But throughout that period of sea change, Fox’s musical-talent competition show American Idol — created by Simon Fuller, with a rotating cast of judges and its mainstay host, Ryan Seacrest — kept plowing ahead, churning out one big-voiced hit-maker after another (to gradually declining ratings). So as a goodbye chorale ahead of the show’s 15th and farewell season (premiering tonight), we canvassed former Idol contestants for their reminiscences about a 21st-century television institution.A Contestant Who Deserved to Win But Didn’t Kris Allen (season-eight winner): One of the most talented singers I saw was Joshua Ledet. Every time he sang, it was so genuine, so heartfelt. Maybe his voice isn’t for everybody, but I always felt something when he sang.

Justin Timberlake performed at White House's celebration of Memphis soul music on Tuesday, serenading Barack and Michelle Obama with a strong take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and imploring the president to sing along.
The event was a part of the Obama's "In Performance" series. The first couple has made a habit of inviting musicians from different genres to explore the themes and history of their respective crafts. Tuesday's event also featured Otis Redding, Booker T Jones, Queen Latifah and Cyndi Lauper.
A clip of Timberlake's performance is available above. Tuesday's gig is yet another step in Timberlake's hot streak that began when he released "Suit & Tie," the Jay-z-featuring lead single off his comeback album "The 20/20 Experience." The singer moved nearly 1 million copies of the album in its debut week, lined up an arena tour with Jay-z and inked a massive deal with Budweiser.

I can’t get no satisfaction — not when it comes to American Idol‘s Season 12 theme nights, anyway.
I know, I know: A couple weeks back I put together a gallery of potential alternatives to the usual “Songs That Inspire” and “Songs From the Year You Were Born” — and I’d actually included “’80s Rock” and “No Ballads Allowed” among my 22 suggestions. So you think that Fox’s official announcement of “Classic Rock, No Ballads” for Top 7 night would’ve been cause for nothing but a joyful Headbangers Ball up in Casa Slezak.

The Top 10 girls of American Idol season 12 threw down the gauntlet last night, and tonight the Top 10 guys will attempt to answer the challenge. And what a big challenge it is.
Can the guys match the girls' talent? Let's find out now...
Elijah Liu starts the night with Rihanna's "Stay." It's a bold move to take on a song currently receiving so much airplay, and one written for a female voice at that. It starts off really nicely, but he's not very dynamic during the performance. He plays it safe and doesn't show much of his range. Keith thought the song suited Elijah's voice and showed control. Nicki loved it and still wants to have Elijah's babies. Randy felt the performance was flat and didn't really go anywhere compared to his performance last week. Mariah thought it was one of his better performances and liked his decision to choose a song with intimate lyrics.

American Idol rolled into Baton Rouge, Louisiana tonight, home state of Randy Jackson and last year's top three finalist, Joshua Ledet.
Before the judging can begin, Mariah has to show off one of her many talents and fix Randy's makeup. And The Dog wears a lot of makeup, guys. Mariah says that everyone needs a fall-back plan and she's a beauty school drop-out. Judging by all the makeup, Randy's fall-back plan is filling in for his statue at Madame Tussaud's.
Now that they're primped and preened, let's get down to business...
Miss Baton Rouge is here to audition and she brought her crutches with her. Megan Miller had a car accident three days before Idol rolled into town, but since her dreams are at stake, she told the doctors the surgery to fix her leg would have to wait. She walked into the room and wowed the judges into compliments and a unanimous yes.

Season 12 of "American Idol" kicked off on Tuesday night, and there was the usual mix of sob stories, awful auditions and terrific talent.Of the three new judges, Nicki Minaj stood out the most, and not because of her wild outfits and hairstyles. The hip-hop princess genuinely seemed to root for the contestants, giving words of encouragement to the ones that were rejected. On the flip side, her over-the-top faces (included several side-eyes and eye-rolls towards Mariah Carey) provided comic relief. We didn't hear or see much from Mariah, save for a few "darlings" and lots of hair stroking. Keith Urban seemed to come off as the "nice" one but was quick to say "no" as well. So, who were the 5 standouts from the New York auditions? Here are our picks:1. Evan RuggieroEvan was an aspiring dancer who was diagnosed with cancer and had his leg amputated. "Idol" loves to milk these sob stories,...

I’m going to come right out and say it: This Wednesday’s X Factor was the show’s best episode ever — and partially because its stars included a pretty boy who spent what felt like 45 minutes debating whether or not to pop his collar, a trio of smokin’-hot sisters, a man who found a controversial (possibly deadly?) solution to male pattern baldness and a heavy-set black woman named Panda who got carried out on a stretcher. (Spoiler alert: All of ‘em advanced to Boot Camp!)
I know, I know, you’re reading this and saying “The X Factor is barely out of diapers.

‘American Idol Live!’ 2012 touched down in Newark, N.J. on Tuesday night, and while the pacing of the show suffered more stops and starts than an octogenarian trying out a stick-shift for the first time, the Season 11 Top 10 nevertheless proved they have plenty of gas in their tanks as the tour enters its final two weeks.
Paired with the right material, a number of the finalists confirmed they can indeed command a stadium-sized crowd: Country gal Skylar Laine dropped charisma-bombs all the way to the cheap seats. Erika Van Pelt put on a display of vocal firepower that left me...

Well! That was a weird episode after a few weeks off. Instead of new routines, the Top 14 performed seven iconic dances from past seasons as a tribute to Mia Michaels. It was great to relive some of her brilliant choreography, but I feel like some of the current contestants got shafted when the judges compared them to the original performers instead of evaluating them on their own merits. Viewers may naturally do the same.
Plus, I’d forgotten how absolutely brutal So You Think You Can Dance’s new elimination policy is. There’s no results show this season, so...

American Idol - where a lucky few rise to the top and sign a life-changing record deal, and where others... well, get voted off and ultimately everyone forgets about them. C’est la vie, we suppose? Hold on a minute. Chris Daughtry? Jennifer Hudson? How about Adam Lambert? They didn’t win it all? Don’t remember Ryan Seacrest announcing any of them as winners.
The funny thing is, some of these finalists are getting more radio play and have gone on to be more successful than those who were actually crowned the AmericanIdol.
Well, we’re currently deciding which of the American Idol winners is the best, but now it’s time to determine the “Best American Idol Finalist.” American Idol winners have had enough glory. It’’s time to show some love to those who unfortunately didn’t win it all. Were you rooting for David Archuleta? Maybe Haley Reinhart?...

Some folks might gripe that Duets is yet another reality singing competition that’s guaranteed to produce a male winner — yeah, there’s not a lady to be found in the Final 3 — but I’ve got a bigger gripe with ABC’s low-wattage summer series: Of the six songs covered during the show’s Season 1 (Season Only?) performance finale, there’s not one that hadn’t been previously covered on American Idol or The Voice.
I know, I know…this kind of “crime” probably only matters to a handful of reality-competition junkies like myself, but given that Duets hasn’t...

For American Idol (TV) fans, nothing beats a concert packed with live music, psychedelic lights, and their very own Top Ten belting out the season's most popular Idol performances. This time, however, there's no judges, no tireless, never-ending commercials (except for the occasional, strategically placed plugs for Idol sponsored products), and no abbreviated songs. This year's Top Ten made Chicago their second stop in the 2012 American Idols Live! tour following an opening night in Detroit, Mi. Fresh out of rehearsals in Los Angeles, the tour is young, and the fatigue of a rigorous travel schedule and an inevitable bout or two of homesickness has not set in with it's cast. Full of excitement and anticipation, they are steadily making their way across America to meet their fans and spread some Idol love. On this occasion, three of the Idols - Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine sat down with...

Joshua Ledet may have developed a reputation as the most outrageous performer of American Idol‘s 11th season, but in actuality, he was holding back big time. “Now that I’m actually free,” says the third-place finisher, “I’ll probably be doing way more and just go crazy on stage.”
Joshua stopped by Idology HQ to discuss the multiple occasions during his Idol run where he made up song lyrics, his state of mind during gut-busting numbers like “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” and “No More Drama,” and the suggestive choreography he had to nix...

If you’re going to describe Jessica Sanchez’s American Idol journey as a rollercoaster ride, make sure there’s a “you must be this tall” sign at the entrance.
There was her introduction to the Idoloonie Nation with a legendary group performance in Las Vegas and that buzzworthy Whitney Houston cover in Top 13 Week. There was her shock elimination at No. 7 (with subsequent need for the Judges’ Save) and not one, but two stunning renditions of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

var brightcovevideoid = '1664849514001'; The dust is settling on season 11 of American Idol, and for runner-up Jessica Sanchez and third-place finisher Joshua Ledet it's a moment of calm before they set out on the Idols Live tour. Well, sort of. The newly minted celebrities are making the rounds, talking to press and meeting important people, like First Lady Michelle Obama. Both stopped by People offices to talk about their favorite moments on the show and to look ahead at their first big concert tour. My favorite moment would probably have to be singing "When a Man Loves a Woman," Ledet says.

'Throughout this competition, I grew a backbone,' Ledet says of his third-place finish and his plans for a post-'Idol' album.

Despite receiving heaps of hyperbolic praise throughout his run on "American Idol" — like, for example, when he was dubbed "one of the best singers ever on the show" — Joshua Ledet wasn't angry when he was booted in the week leading up to the "Idol" finale. Quite the opposite, in fact.
"I was happy that I finished third; all the stress was gone from me. I felt relieved that I didn't have to worry about competing, or learning any more songs ... I was really, really relieved after getting voted off," Ledet told MTV News. "Just being on a schedule every day, knowing what you're going to do throughout the whole day, at the exact time,...

The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. After over 132 million votes, 21 year old Phil Phillips from Leesburg, Ga has been crowned the winner of American Idol Season 11. What a glorious moment this was. The finale was jam packed with surprise performances, a two hour celebration concert leading up to the big moment, the win that many may have wanted but not anticipated actually happening. That’s what makes this win so fantastic! The underdog took it home! The one contestant who made no apologies or excuses for being true to himself all season long took the win. Congratulations Phil Phillips! A win well deserved!

The "American Idol" Season 11 finale welcomed "Idol's" annual cavalcade of music stars to the stage for various performances with the Top 13 finalists. Among them were Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino, classic rocker Neil Diamond and country superstar Reba McEntire.
Fantasy sang "Take Me to the Pilot" with Joshua Ledet, which was ... a lot of screaming. It was kind of like they were scream-fighting at each other. Not really our cup of tea, but let us know in the comments if you were super pumped about it.
Five of the male finalists sang a Neil Diamond medley that consisted of "America," "Cracklin Rosie" and "I'm a Believer," then Colton Dixon welcomed Mr. Diamond himself to the stage to sing-talk his way through "Sweet Caroline."
Finally, in one of the better Idol-sings-with-famous person performances of the night, country cutie Skylar Laine sang "Turn on the Radio" with Reba, which was actually a lot of fun.

Fans weren't only focused on who would win American Idol during the show, they were debating who wore the better skin-tight catsuit! Fantasia was there to sing with Joshua Ledet and fans say that she was even making up lyrics to Elton John's "Take Me To The Pilot." Last night, America crowned Phillip Phillips, the 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Georgia, as the latest "American Idol."
This should've come as a surprise to exactly no one, given that Phillip is now the fifth in an uninterrupted line of "White Guys With Guitars" who have snagged the coveted crown over the past few seasons. I was noting the bias towards "Wgwg" way back in my recap of the Top 24 -- although in those halcyon days, I was foolishly giving the edge to Colton, just because he was more conventionally attractive (and more annoying), even going so far as to note: "He's white, male and can play an instrument, so he'll probably win." Close enough, right?
Clearly, I was discounting the sympathy votes Phil-Phil would earn for his kidney problems, but I did note that he had one of the stand-out performances in the first live round. I've enjoyed a...

America has voted, and Phillip Phillips is the new "American Idol!"The 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Georgia bested 16-year-old singing sensation Jessica Sanchez of California to claim the title. A record 132 million votes were cast in the finale.Phillip is the show's eleventh winner and the fifth male contestant in a row to win. His winning single, "Home," will be released this week.Phillip was consistently praised for his originality and never found himself in the bottom group. Jessica was actually the lowest vote getter among the Top 7, but got a reprieve from judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.Had she won, Jessica would have been the first saved contestant to win "American Idol" and also the youngest (Jordin Sparks, "Idol's" last female winner, was 17 when she won Season 6).The two finalists will join Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone, Colton Dixon, DeAndre Brackensick,...

American Idol Season 11 Winner: Announced!
The 10 castoffs open the night with "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars. Man, there was a whole lot of talent in this season's contestants. This is easily one of the best group numbers I've ever seen on this show and I'm almost never a fan of the group sings. I even feel like there's more choreography than we've seen in years. Dare I say it, I think this tour will be a fun one.
In Phillip Phillips' first performance of the night, he's teaming up with John Fogerty from Ccr for "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "Bad Moon Rising." The performances aren't spectacular,...
