DC's horror imprint just announced Soul Plumber, a brand-new six-issue series from the hosts of Last Podcast on the Left!
Burbank, CA — July 14, 2021 — Finally, exorcism made easy in DC Horror Presents: Soul Plumber.
From Marcus Parks, Henry Zebrowski, and Ben Kissel, the hosts of "The Last Podcast On The Left," comes a new six-issue series that dives deep into the sewers of the human soul—also, there are demons.
Edgar Wiggins, a disgraced former seminary student, is desperate to find a way to answer what he believes is his higher calling. He thinks he’s found it in a seminar hosted in a hotel conference room by the Soul Plumbers, who have a machine that could be the secret to delivering souls from Satan. Edgar’s too broke to buy in, but that’s not enough to stop this true devotee: he steals the blueprints and builds a pirated version...

DC Reveals Details for Fear State Coming This Fall: "This Fall, The Scarecrow is sending Gotham City straight to Hell, and it’s up to Batman and his allies to stop it!
Fear State is a horror-themed Gotham City event that unifies plot threads started in DC’s fan-favorite publishing events, DC Future State and Infinite Frontier. Fear State not only continues The Scarecrow’s vision of a fear-controlled Gotham, but also Mayor Christopher Nakano’s mission to protect the city with his ground-breaking deal with The Magistrate.
This can’t miss event is also the launching point for several new series and plotlines across all Batman-family titles, setting a new status quo for 2022! The action begins this August with the following titles:
I Am Batman #0 – The age of a new Dark Knight begins! On August 10, picking up immediately from the events of The Next Batman: Second Son, Jace...

Harley Quinn is ready to make amends. After decades demolishing Gotham and decimating its citizens alongside the Joker, she’s seeking forgiveness. That’s where we find the anti-hero in Future State. The two-issue event ends this week and sets up a new status quo for the Maid of Mayhem. Den of Geek chatted to Harley writer Stephanie Phillips about Future State, Infinite Frontier, and how Silence of the Lambs influenced some of the best moments in Harley’s recent crime-fighting adventures.
Future State: Harley Quinn introduced us to a Gotham where heroes are outlawed and a militarized police force known as the Magistrate rules supreme. Within this world Harley is a woman imprisoned, literally. That is until Jonathan Crane asks for her help to catch the criminals of the city. It’s a recognizable setup, one that Phillips took directly from a classic movie.
“It was funny,” Phillips laughs.

Never let it be said that Brian Michael Bendis doesn’t know how to keep busy. The prolific writer has had his hands full since coming to DC in 2018. Arriving with much fanfare on both Superman and Action Comics, Bendis also relaunched Young Justice, co-created a new DC mainstay in Naomi, wrote the excellent Batman: Universe, shepherded the Event Leviathan mini, and more. All of these books introduced new characters, re-tooled existing ones (such as aging up young Jonathan Kent to his mid-teens), and set various wheels in motion throughout the DC Universe.
And in the midst of that he also rebooted the team with the largest roster in all of comics, the one that brings with it the most complex web of continuity, the one that requires the most amount of worldbuilding by virtue of its 31st century setting.

When it comes to over-sized special edition comics, DC seemingly can’t wait to whip up a steady stream of one after another. That’s not a complaint, mind you, just an observation. These 80 Page Giants must be good-sellers for DC, and although nearly 10 dollars a go, they are good value for the reader. You get to see a whole load of creators jamming together on more characters than you can shake a stick at, and the odds are that you will enjoy the majority of the stories, if not all. DC do enjoy their themed specials as well, and I must admit to being a sucker for things like Halloween and Christmas specials down the years, and I’m no different now. This Special gives us 10 short and hopefully sweet peeks into the more mysterious corners of the DC Universe,...

I know every comic book publisher loves a ‘special’ issue, an ‘anniversary’ issue, or a ‘reached a big number’ issue, but at first glance a 144 page monster book for issue 1027 of Detective Comics seems a bit of a stretch. Longevity, sure, but we just had a whole raft of anniversary specials did we not? Then you realise. Detective Comics #27, back in 1939, was not only the very first appearance of Batman, but became the title that led to National Periodicals eventually becoming DC Comics. They liked the series so much they named a company after it. So, in comic book terms, Detective Comics #27 is probably the second most important published, beaten out only by Action Comics #1. DC, for probably both genuinely wanting to honour Detective Comics legacy and to squeeze that Batman cash cow just a little bit more, have thrown...

Prolific producer Mark Gordon is setting sail with a new production company, Mark Gordon Pictures.
The venture is backed by Entertainment One, where Gordon served as president until July 2019 in the wake of friction with the group. He then transitioned to a development and production deal with the company, which has since been acquired by toy giant Hasbro. The Mark Gordon Company was fully acquired by eOne in 2018, three years after eOne took a majority stake in the company.
Gordon, the producer of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Criminal Minds,” and major films such as “Saving Private Ryan,” has now launched a company that intends to create projects for film and television, in addition to expanding into theater domestically and in the U.K. Mark Gordon Pictures, which has a “significant” in-house development fund, will continue to create content for eOne as part of their existing agreement.

I think it’s a pretty good indicator of how much The Joker has entered into popular culture that he now merits his own Anniversary Special. He’s been pretty popular since the days of the Batman TV show back in the 1960’s of course, though Cesar Romero’s Joker bears little resemblance to today’s. The Joker has gone from being a clownish villain, a villain who uses humour as his calling card, to more often than not a representation of pure anarchy in human form, fighting back against the law and order of society, personified in Batman. I’ve read articles before where we are told to see The Joker as the hero, embracing freedom of thought and action, and Batman has an instrument of control and repression. I doubt Bob Kane and Bill Finger had all that...

I seem to be reviewing a whole lot of 80 Page Giants of late, most of which have been appearing from DC. That’s not a complaint mind you. I’m still an avid collector of the DC Dollar Comics issues from the late 1970′s and early 1980′s, so something about DC and oversized comics just feels right. Besides, there is a very good reason for this one. One of DC’s most famous characters, or franchises if you are a corporate lawyer, is celebrated his 750th issue. Not all in one continuous run of course, but in the many volumes and stop starts of recent times, Flash has crossed the exclusive line of characters with a 750 issue run. That’s something to celebrate. So how do you celebrate? You pull in writers and artists old and new. Your Geoff Johns,...

When you have read as many comics down the years as me, literally in the tens of thousands, you’ve pretty much seen it all. Quirky indie books? Check. Blockbuster multi-title crossovers? Check. Inter-company books? Check. Monthly books published on time? Che….er, well I’ve nearly seen it all. Point is, when you see something a little different it does tend to catch your eye. DC’s Crimes of Passion, echoing those old lurid EC Comics books, certainly caught my eye. Essentially, it’s DC’s attempt at a Valentine’s Day Special, and why not. Actually, it is ten attempts at telling a decent Valentine’s Day story, as there are ten short stories in total, all with different characters and creative teams. Will we get lucky this Valentine’s? Let’s take a look.

Wonder Woman has had quite the renaissance in recent years, and as one of the Big Three (with Superman and Batman) it is thoroughly deserved. You don’t get continually published since 1941 unless you have something that clicks with readers after all. She first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941, graduated to her own book with Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, and has never looked back since. She has gone through several’ fad’ phases down the years, such as the depowered white jump suit era (yikes), and has sometimes struggled with getting enough readers to pick up her book. Historically, though, having a female character they are trying to aim at girls but written by middle aged men, doesn’t really work, and also ends up alienating the male audience. Most self respecting teenage boys back in the day wouldn’t pick up...

Sina Grace & Mike Norton tackle DC's funniest hero and the results are predictably excellent.
It's not a massive retcon, or a huge character being brought back to prominence, by my favorite low-key development in comics in 2020 so far is Sina Grace gettting more work at DC. He wrote one of my favorite lost period X-comics and probably the definitive Iceman story, and his work at Boom! is consistently entertaining. He has such a strong authorial voice that shines through in all his work - it's clear and distinct, and balances dry and absurd comedy along with character drama so well. So handing him Plastic Man for a Valentine's Day-themed anthology book, DC's Crimes of Passion, is absolutely perfect.
In another moment of serendipity (or just really good editing), he's paired with Mike Norton. Norton is the creator of Battlepug, so obviously he's got a handle on cartooning ridiculous physical comedy.

J’onn J'onzz goes into the thoughtscape in this preview of Martian Manhunter #9 from DC.
Steve Orlando must be incredible to work with, because he lands artistic talent like he’s already a comics legend.
This isn’t meant to be a backhanded complement to Orlando. His writing is superb, and it has been since almost the moment he burst onto the scene - Virgil was one of the best comics when it came out, and that’s a pretty steep departure from the work he’s been nailing at DC. But once he started getting a ton of work at DC, it was one ridiculous artist after another - Aco and Hugo Petrus on Midnighter, Fernando Blanco on Midnighter and Apollo, Andy MacDonald and Ivan Reis on Justice League of America, Travel Foreman on Electric Warriors, and Riley Rossmo on Batman/The Shadow and now in Martian Manhunter,...

Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #3 is a hard boiled detective story...in the way only the Doom Patrol could deliver it.
A good adaptation will make you reexamine (or reevaluate) the source material. This is why Doom Patrol will endure as a great TV show. It revelled in its comic book-iness in a way that no other comics TV show would ever dare, and amplified the things about the comics that made them so unique. Gerard Way, Jeremy Lambert and Nick Derington have been turning that comics-uniqueness up in Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds, the Young Animal return for the series, and in this exclusive preview, Steve Orlando and Evan “Doc” Shaner step in to add to it.
Steve Orlando is quietly one of the best writers in the business and definitely one of the best things DC has going for it right now.

Lex Luthor is leading the charge in DC's Year of the Villain, and Justice League reveals his new look.
We are living through a little bit of a Martian Manhunter renaissance right now. On the one hand, you’ve got Steve Orlando and Riley Rossmo’s terrific “Year One”-esque take on J’onn’s time on Mars and how that shaped the man he is today in his solo miniseries, Martian Manhunter. It’s a weird, fascinating story about Martian life that, of course, looks incredible as is to be expected from Rossmo’s art.
On the other hand, you have Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV’s Justice League. It’s approaching him kind of like the Timmverse/DC Animated Universe did: he’s quietly the most important person on the team. In the cartoon, he was rarely the focus - it was always about John and Shayera’s relationship,...

Universal Pictures has taken the Chris Pratt-led tentpole “Cowboy Ninja Viking” off its schedule and undated the movie, which was set to release on June 28, 2019.
Sources tell Variety that the film is still in active development with Pratt, Priyanka Chopra, and director Michelle MacLaren still on board. It will be re-dated at a later time to accommodate production scheduling. Insiders say the studio delayed the film rather than rushing it out to make the June 28 deadline. A source close to the situation compared it to “The Mummy’s” rushed production schedule.
“Cowboy Ninja Viking” is based on the Image Comics graphic novel by A.J. Lieberman and illustrator Riley Rossmo. It was adapted by Dan Mazeau (“Wrath of the Titans”) and Ryan Engle (“The Commuter”). Craig Mazin wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay with an original version by “Deadpool” writers Paul Wernick and Everett David Reese.

Welcome back to another installment of Panel Discussion – this time featuring a rundown of my picks of the Top 30 comics released in March 2018. This is part one, a countdown of books 30-16… But first the caveats:
First and foremost this is simply my list and with that comes a great deal of subjectivity. Any art form is a subjective medium and taste plays a major role. So if you feel my rankings are way off you probably have a legitimate point. My hope is to simply to highlight great books that deserve attention. We too often focus on the negative so why not take some time to celebrate the positive.
Since this is my list that also means I can only rank issues I have actually read. There may be a book that is in your top five that does not make the cut. Please let me know. I try...

Yesterday, news came along that the adaptation of the graphic novel Cowboy Ninja Viking, by A.J. Lieberman and illustrator Riley Rossmo, has found a director. Known for her work on big budget series like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Leftovers and The Walking Dead, Michelle MacLaren will take a seat in the director's chair. Given her track record this makes her more than capable of taking on a feature film for the first time. Cowboy Ninja Viking tells of a counter-intelligence unit that uses multiple personality disorder patients to create agents known as Triplets, referring to the three personalities the killers have. When the agents become rogue hired guns, the deadliest Triplet of them all, Cowboy Ninja Viking, is called in...

If ever there was a would-be blockbuster that sold its high-concept in the title, it is Cowboy Ninja Viking. What is a cowboy-ninja-Viking you might ask? Well it’s an action movie that is slated to star Chris Pratt, and if that wasn’t Aaa enough in genre appeal, Game Of Thrones’ Michelle MacLaren has been hired to direct the picture.
The hiring of MacLaren demonstrates that Universal Pictures is still very intent on making Cowboy Ninja Viking happen after the film was first announced in 2014. Pratt signed onto the conceit then, which is based off an Image Comics property, while fresh off making waves in Guardians Of The Galaxy but before Jurassic World. Last month’s opening issue of Batman/The Shadow, a rare cross-company crossover from DC and Dynamite Entertainment, kickstarted the series with a bang as it delivered a thrilling throwback to the days of good old-fashioned pulp fiction mystery. It did hold back on the plot a bit too much, however, and lacked a proper team-up between the titular heroes. Thankfully, issue #2 sorts this out as the narrative shifts into the next gear.
As per superhero crossover rules, the two vigilantes came to loggerheads in the opener and so this second issue sees their prickly relationship start to thaw as they realize they’re actually on the same side. Despite their different methods in taking down criminals, this time Batman and the Shadow are after the same man; a mysterious,...

If you’ve had the privilege of reading the first issue of the six-part Batman/The Shadow miniseries, you’d probably agree with us in saying that co-writers Scott Snyder and Steve Orlando knocked it out of the park (you can read our review here). But, that shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise given the former’s sterling reputation of writing for the Dark Knight and the fact that the latter currently includes him in Justice League of America.
Still, it must be a challenge for any talented scribe to crack the formula for a crossover, especially one that entails two separate publishers coming together. We haven't really heard that much about Chris Pratt's feature film adaptation of the comic Cowboy Viking Ninja since it was first announced back in 2014. I wasn't sure if it was still in development, but according to Pratt, it is, and it's shaping up to be something "really, really fantastic."

At this point, Chris Pratt is essentially sitting at the very top of the Hollywood tree. Having successfully shed his Parks And Recreation character, the actor now has his fingers in many blockbuster pies. He’s currently working on Jurassic World 2, having seen the first Jurassic World take the box office by storm in 2015; he voiced the character of Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie, which means he’ll undoubtedly continue to have an endless stream of sequel opportunities, and he’s the lead in the Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise, forming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – which means he also gets to be in the next Avengers films, too. He really just needs a Star Wars movie and he’ll have the set. But, he’s aiming to create a franchise of his own, now. That project comes in the form of Cowboy Ninja Viking, and it’s definitely still happening.

Anyone who’s familiar with their Bat-history will know that one major influence on the creation of Batman was pulp fiction vigilante The Shadow. Seeing as the character is currently enjoying a renaissance over at Dynamite Comics, it makes a lot of sense for DC and Dynamite to come together and team up the Dark Knight with his literary forebear. The partnership should be a brilliant one on paper, and this opening issue of the Batman/The Shadow six-part crossover is a suitably promising start.
The comic comes from the dynamic duo of Scott Snyder (All-Star Batman) and Steve Orlando (Justice League of America). As you would expect from two DC-based writers, this is absolutely a Batman book first and foremost. However, the pair’s affection for the noirish pulpiness of The Shadow’s world shines through. Dream crossovers are certainly becoming all the rage these days in comic books.
