With Nsw reopening for the fully vaccinated, Sydney Film Festival is set to finally go ahead, with a line-up that director Nashen Moodley believes is one the most diverse and exciting in the event’s 68-year history.
Traditionally held in June, this year has seen the festival pushed back twice, initially to August, and then November.
Yet when the Delta outbreak nixed the August edition, it was unclear that the festival would realistically be held at all. Indeed, Sff will mark the first major festival event to occur in Sydney’s CBD post-lockdown, a notion that fills Moodley with “excitement but trepidation”.
The move to November meant the festival was tasked with reconfirming every title that had been programmed so far. Overall, it lost about 20 films, but gained almost 30, including some of the year’s most anticipated out of Venice and Toronto.

Okay, enough with the somber serious stuff, we’re finally getting into some real Summer cinema subject matter. No, it’s not a big bombastic superhero epic, nor an action thriller, or even a raunchy slapstick comedy. This one’s a story of young people in love, and though it’s based on a play it does incorporate several themes from movies based on Ya or Young Adult novels. There’s the impending disease doom of The Fault In Our Stars and Five Feet Apart and the opposites attract vibe of The Spectacular Now. But unlike many “Ya-based” films, the parents (one set at least) pretty much get major “screen time”. Oh, and then there’s the setting: the suburbs of Australia (and a lot of cities like New South Wales and Sydney). Combine all those elements and you get the sweet and sour “dramedy” dish called Babyteeth.
It all starts at a commuter platform,...

The story begs for the big screen: In 1986, five-year-old Saroo Brierley, the youngest member of a family in the impoverished Indian neighborhood of Khandwa, got stuck on a train. He traveled close to 1,000 miles across his country, wound up in a shelter and eventually was adopted by an Australian couple. Some 25 years later, equipped with Google Earth and vague childhood memories, Brierley retraced his path and found his way back to his birth mother. Cue the tears.
“Lion,” the first feature directed by Garth Davis, sufficiently realizes the emotional arc built into Brieley’s experience. Adapted from his book “A Long Way Home,” the movie features a sturdy Dev Patel as the intense young Saroo eager to reconnect with his roots, but the movie’s best moments precede his arrival. In its first hour, Davis delivers a gripping account of young Brierley’s Homeric odyssey across India, during which time...

UnIndian
Starring Brett Lee, Tannistha Chatterjee
Directed by Anupam Sharma
Rating: * ½
UnIndian could well be titled ‘There’s a White Naked Man In Our Daughter’s Bedroom’, as one of the film’s intended high-points occurs when Brett Lee saunters out of his lady-love Tannishtha Chatterjee’s bedroom only to run into her shocked parents in the living room.
Nervously his towel drops off. Giggle.
The …errrr….joke doesn’t end there. Mira’s father stares at Brett’s crotch and exclaims, ‘You are not wearing a chaddhi.’
This stating-of-the-obvious business, we soon realize, is a force of habit in the film. Everyone is doing it all the time. Thrusting banal home-truths into our faces until we cry for mercy. But who’s listening? Everybody brown or white, is busy dancing to Bollywood beats manufactured in factory-precise doses for global consumption.
Come to think about it, from the opening shots...

Emerging director Craig D. Foster has given insights into the making of his new horror/comedy, Overtime, which is set to open the St Kilda Film Festival.
The eight-minute short film, which stars Aaron Glenane, Adam Dunn, Arka Das and Anslie Clouston, is about a meek accountant, Ralph, who is forced to work overtime on the night of a full moon — which poses him a rather significant problem, given that he is also a werewolf.
Foster (writer/director/producer) tells If he wrote the film with his wife, Emma McKenna (producer/writer/editor), which was then taken through Metro Screen's Raw Nerve initiative.
Raw Nerve is an initiative funded by Screen Australia aimed at emerging filmmakers, enabling them to make a short film (5-7 mins) on digital video.
