It’s a celebration for Benny the Butcher in New York’s Def Jam offices. I got to speak with the Griselda rapper in late December, the same day that the Buffalo Mc and members of his team came down for a Def Jam-sponsored event ahead of his debut album with the label, Everybody Can’t Go, which was released last week. He had also just dropped “Big Dawg,” where he went toe-to-toe with a lyrically pristine Lil Wayne. For Benny, the celebration may have represented more for him than...

Out of the album categories at the upcoming Grammys, the race for Best Rap Album is one of the hardest to predict. It’s a lineup where every album has a big advantage and a big question mark looming over it. It might be the only album lineup this year where a case could be made for each of the five nominees. Whether that speaks to the albums being great or to how bad this year was for hip-hop, I’ll let you be the judge.
The presumed frontrunner is Drake and 21 Savage’s “Her Loss,” which earned nominations all across the rap field. The album is arguably the most successful here; it was the number-four album of 2023 according to Billboard. It’s also led by the singles “Rich Flex” and “Spin Bout U,” which are both nominated and both urban radio chart-toppers. All of that could be enough to...

There’s been intense speculation about just what’s behind the dearth of hip-hop at the top of the charts this year. It took until August for a rap album (Travis Scott’s Utopia) to top the Billboard 200. Industry experts, troubled by the shift, have been pondering: Is this a sign of a commercial decline, or...

Much of the discussion around producer-helmed rap albums favors the so-called boom-bap variety. Where fans clamor for their favorite lyricists to lock in with one producer, like Nas and Hit-Boy, Gibbs and Madlib, or Black Thought and Danger Mouse on Cheat Codes. It makes sense that the classic two-person dynamic is reflected in traditionalist hip-hop — but that’s not the extent of its potential, as trap music ingenue Metro Boomin demonstrated on his recent album, Heroes & Villains.
The 15-track project re-affirms the potential for new terrain within the trap sound.

What happens when a made-up, virtual rapper signs a deal with a major record label? In the case of Fn Meka, a digitally rendered Black artist largely controlled by artificial intelligence and non-Black creators, major missteps and public backlash over “digital blackface” quickly led to a fiery end. Within weeks, Capitol Records scrapped his deal, his Instagram went private and most of his TikToks were deleted.
The saga resurfaced ongoing conversations about cultural appropriation and racism in AI, given Meka’s use of the N-word and fabricated backstory about his time spent in prison. That the “robot rapper” even received a record deal and amassed more than 10 million followers on TikTok, though, shows that the interest in virtual influencers has persisted, six years after another virtual project — Lil Miquela, an L.A.-based singer and model — became an online sensation.

Long ago, Beyoncé decided to let her music speak for herself.
“I’m grateful I have the ability to choose what I want to share,” she told Harper’s Bazaar last year, in a brief, extremely rare interview that reads as if it may have been conducted via e-mail. “One day I decided I wanted to be like Sade and Prince. I wanted the focus to be on my music, because if my art isn’t strong enough or meaningful enough to keep people interested and inspired, then I’m in the wrong business.

Earlier this year, singer-songwriter-producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds — known for writing massive hits for Toni Braxton, TLC, and Boyz II Men — received a call from P. Diddy.
Diddy’s job was to convince Edmonds to face off against Teddy Riley on an Instagram-based rap battle. And he didn’t mince words. “He said, ‘Face, fuck that shy shit,'” Edmonds recalls. “‘Go do this.'”
Edmonds agreed. Though he was reluctant before Diddy’s blunt persuasion, his back-and-forth with Riley in the Instagram battle — a musical competition, called Verzuz, in which writers,...

BET has announced a new original documentary, “Smoke: Marijuana + Black America,” executive-produced and narrated by Nas. The two-hour film will provide a closeup look at marijuana culture and its impact on both American society and especially the Black community. It’s set to air on Nov. 18.
“The world has finally begun opening up to the cannabis industry the way I feel it should have years ago,” says Nasir “Nas” Jones. “Even still, hate exists in this business for black people, and that is something that sickens me and should be recognized for its blatant evil. The people that have been locked up for marijuana should not only be freed but receive restitution for the damage done to them by outdated laws. It’s important to spread awareness on this, and that’s why everyone needs to make sure they tune in and watch the documentary ‘Smoke!’”

Polo G has a record deal, a hit song, and two critically acclaimed albums, but he considers one of his greatest accomplishments to be simply making it to age 21. Surviving a violent childhood in Chicago is a persistent theme across the versatile rapper’s catalog. “You can be as young as 14, living life like a grown man,” he says. “I had to mature quickly growing up in the trenches.”

Kanye West gave the world a rare glimpse into the music industry’s labyrinth of recording contracts last week when he tweeted out his own paperwork with Universal Music Group — and then lambasted those agreements as exploitative and unfair, demanding his copyrights be returned to him.
As far as the actual deal goes, Kanye’s isn’t particularly bad: Music lawyers who spoke with Rolling Stone call West’s deal standard for an artist at his level. The papers indicate that he started on a royalty deal frequently afforded to upcoming artists,...

Big Sean has a cure for what’s ailing the world. In fact, Sean hawks so many cures on his latest album that it’s hard to keep track. The first one resides on the opening bar of “Why Would I Stop?” when he proclaims: “This shit the antidote, this the ‘cure cancer’ flow/Stop a pandemic and the globe.” As of the time of publication for this post, cancer and the global pandemic are still raging, despite the arrival of Sean’s new flow, but he nevertheless makes his point.

On his 1994 coming-of-age masterpiece Illmatic, Nas rendered the sprawling Queensbridge Houses, and the thrills and despair of young Black life in Dinkins-era New York City, with the detail and scale of Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. He’s never come close to making another Illmatic, but he’s still mining the album’s rich source material 26 years later.
The high points on King’s Disease, Nas’s first full-length album since 2012, are the songs when he revisits his formative experiences in the late Eighties and early to mid Nineties.

As of this writing Doja Cat is the front-runner with leading odds of 10/3. Among those betting on her to win are 19 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s VMAs, and 18 of our All-Star Top 24 who had the best predictions when you combine the last two years’ results. “The Box” is Roddy Ricch‘s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and it’s still going strong, holding onto the top spot for the fifth week in a row on the chart dated February 15 (watch the lyric video above). That makes it the longest-running hit on the chart since Lizzo‘s “Truth Hurts” spent seven nonconsecutive weeks on top last fall, ending on October 26. But it means yet another week as a runner-up for fellow rapper Future.
Ricch’s “Box” has ruled the roost since January 18, about a month after his first studio album “Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial” debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The 21-year-old hip-hop breakout also got a prime showcase at the Grammys on January 26, where he performed as part of a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle and won Best Rap Performance for “Racks in the Middle” with Hussle and Hit-Boy.

It's been almost a year since the death of rapper Nipsey Hussle, but his memory lives on. On Sunday night, the late rapper's friends came together to perform a beautiful tribute to his legacy. The performance opened with Meek Mill and Roddy Ricch performing "Letter to Nipsey" before transitioning into DJ Khaled and John Legend's rendition of "Higher."
The song is off DJ Khaled's Father of Asahd album and features both Hussle and Legend, which Khaled highlighted by featuring a video of Hussle in the background. Kirk Franklin joined the act alongside a full choir, with the performance's closing verse delivered by rapper Yg, a close friend to Hussle.
Hussle is nominated for three posthumous awards, including best rap/sung performance and rap song. The rapper won his first-ever Grammy earlier in the evening for best rap performance for "Racks in the Middle" with Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy. Hussle's family,...

Even though Nipsey Hussle wasn’t physically at the 2020 Grammys, his spirit and presence presided over the proceedings.
Two of Nipsey’s final collaborations before his death — “Racks in the Middle,” featuring Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy and DJ Khaled’s “Higher” featuring John Legend — won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Sung Performance. But the prevailing question throughout the night was how Meek Mill, Roddy, DJ Khaled, Legend and Yg would honor the life of South Central rapper after his death last March within the confines of a restrictive award show.

Nipsey Hussle loomed large over the Grammy Awards on Sunday night as the late rapper was honored with a star-studded tribute. Hussle, real name Ermias Asghedom, was fatally shot in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019. He was 33 years old.
On Sunday night at the Staples Center, director Ava DuVernay introduced the tribute to the fallen rap icon.
“Tonight we celebrate the enduring memory of an artist and a leader who made brave, brilliant strides to unite this community here in Los Angeles and around the world,” DuVernay said. Meek Mill and Roddy Ricch took the stage to open the tribute.
Moments later, the Grammys audience rose to its feet as DJ Khaled and John Legend performed the powerful single “Higher,” which they recorded with Hussle. Rapper Yg, Hussle’s band, Kirk Franklin and a gospel choir joined them for the performance, in one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

John Legend, Meek Mill, DJ Khaled and more took part in the Grammys’ tribute to Nipsey Hussle. The rapper was shot and killed in March 2019 at the age of 33.
Meek Mill opened the tribute by rapping directly to Nipsey, accompanied only by piano. He was quickly joined by Roddy Ricch, currently the bestselling artist in the country, for a performance of “Letter to Nipsey,” before the appearance of DJ Khaled and John Legend for a rendition of “Higher,” a song from Khaled’s latest album, which featured Hussle and Legend.
