I was drawn to 2018′s Family initially by the lead-casting of Taylor Schilling, mainly because of how much I liked her throughout the seasons of Orange is the New Black. I also found an appeal in the synopsis, which sounded fresh, interesting and fun. Who doesn’t dig that kind of thing? As for the brief idea here, we follow Kate (Schilling), a Senior V.P who is very focused on her career, but when her estranged brother asks her, last-minute, to babysit her niece Maddie, she reluctantly helps out and see’s her life becomes a chaotic one in the process. Oh, and there’s Juggalo’s too. Yep.

Cannes 2018 crime-dramedy Under The Silver Lake by David Robert Mitchell came out on top among the weekend’s crowded roster of specialty newcomers, which mostly had slow launches. The A24 title had a long journey to its theatrical release. The title, which stars Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough, grossed $40,157 in two locations over the Easter and Passover holiday weekend, averaging $20,079, the highest per theater average among releases as of Sunday morning.
IFC Films’ Red Joan was the only other limited release starter to have a per theater average with five figures. Starring Dame Judi Dench as Joan Stanley, the Kgb’s longest-serving British spy, the feature grossed $40,631 in four locations, averaging $10,158. The company said Sunday it is expecting to “see a nice bump today from matinee audiences” who are fans of Dench. Comedies, docs and a Bollywood title are among the Easter and Passover weekend’s packed roster of new specialty releases. The heavy number of limited openers comes just ahead of next weekend’s rollout of Avengers: Endgame, which will mark mostly a pause for new specialties. Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, starring Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce, begins its regular theatrical run following a one-night showing in hundreds of locations around the country last week. The Film Arcade is bowing fellow comedy Family, starring Taylor Schilling and directed by feature first-timer Laura Steinel. Counterprogramming the religious holiday weekend, Magnolia is opening Sundance doc Hail Satan? with an exclusive New York run before heading to L.A. next weekend. Zeitgeist Films/Kino Lorber is launching doc Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché by Pamela B. Green and narrated by Jodie Foster exclusively in L.

The Film Arcade has released the trailer for “Family,” writer-director Laura Steinel’s comedy starring Taylor Schilling as a workaholic whose unexpected week of niece-sitting naturally ends at the Gathering of the Juggalos. The “Orange Is the New Black” star isn’t the only one immersing herself in the music and culture of Insane Clown Posse, as newcomer Bryn Vale dons black-and-white face paint. Watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis: “Kate Stone (Taylor Schilling) is career-focused, and enjoys her life that way. Her brash attitude keeps relationships at arm’s length, making her an outcast in her own right. When her estranged brother calls asking her to babysit her tween niece Maddie, Kate reluctantly agrees to help. "I don't want your money, Kate, I want a sister!" The Film Arcade has released the first official trailer for an indie comedy titled Family, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year. The film is the feature debut of writer Laura Steinel, telling a story about a young woman who reluctantly babysits her brother's very weird, bullied tween daughter, only to discover she's into the juggalo community and planning to sneak away to an Insane Clown Posse concert. Taylor Schilling stars as the self-absorbed workaholic sister, and the cast includes Bryn Vale, Kate McKinnon, Brian Tyree Henry, Eric Edelstein, Allison Tolman, Jessie Ennis, and Matt Walsh. Family is, of course, a film about learning that "family can be found in all different forms" and features a "delightful and layered comedic performance" from Schilling. Enjoy this one. Family debuted at SXSW last week and it's a funny, honest, and refreshing film centered around strong leading ladies. It serves as a reminder that women can own a film too and it doesn't have to be one of those boring romcoms. We sat down with some of the cast along with writer/director Laura Steinel to discuss the film.
Kate (played by Taylor Schilling) is a businesswoman in New York married to her career. When her brother (played by Eric Edelstein) begs her to watch her niece, Maddie (played by Bryn Vale) because his wife (played by Allison Tolman)'s mother is ill – she drags her feet but eventually agrees. Though, while under Kate's supervision, Maddie befriends a bunch of Juggalos and Kate has to struggle with kind of saving her from those “wrong side of the tracks” type people. The film eventually becomes a dual coming of age...

Kate Stone (Taylor Schilling) has spent her whole life chasing boring leads in a bland office job, can’t stand her other people, and has such an estranged relationship with her brother (Eric Edelstein) that she barely realizes he has an adolescent daughter Maddie (Bryn Vale) — until, one day, he begs her to babysit the girl for a few days while her parents are away. So begins the formula of “Family,” writer-director Laura Steinel’s amiable debut, which belongs to that familiar tradition of commercial storytelling that finds an unhappy woman discovering a better path in connecting with others. You’ve probably seen a version of this movie before, just not with all the Juggalos.
That’s right, Juggalos: those hard-partying anarchists in clown makeup who gather each year for raucous debauchery with carnivalesque glee. “Family” begins with Kate stumbling through that affair, looking terrified and out of place, setting...

A self-improvement-through-childcare comedy exposing the hitherto unknown potential of the Insane Clown Posse to enable young girls' emotional growth, Laura Steinel's Family introduces an 11-year-old girl ready to run off and join the Juggalos. Playing the career-minded jerk stuck temporarily with caring for the kid, Taylor Schilling colors within the lines of the Bad Fill-in-the-Blank misbehavior genre, with a performance that is less debauched than self-centered to the point of criminal negligence. Enjoyable despite its familiarity, the pic has commercial appeal well beyond the Faygo-guzzling demographic.

In one of the best episodes of "The Office," Michael Scott goes to Canada on a business trip, joined by Andy and Oscar, where he experiences the exotic customs and traditions of Winnipeg. And the brewing comedy "Women In Business" sounds like a riff on that idea. Emma Stone, Kate McKinnon and Jillian Bell are attached to star in the picture that follows two competitive businesswomen who head to Canada on a business trip, only to find it derailed by an intern they hire off Craigslist. The project comes from the pen of Laura Steinel (Amazon's "Red Oaks"), and has Jake Szymanski ("7 Days In Hell," "Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates") attached to direct. With that trio of comedic star power, the movie sounds like it has "big hit" written all over it. Indeed, "Women In Business" saw various studios battling over it, but 20th Century Fox emerged victorious. [THR]...

Judy Greer is finally carving out a space of her very own, with a comedy pilot for Fox, written by Red Oaks staff writer Laura Steinel. The show is currently untitled, but revolves around a Human Resources department headed by a talented and ambitious woman, played by Greer. This move to a headlining position follows two seasons of the FX series Married, in addition to her ongoing supporting role on the award-winning animated comedy show, Archer, and several high profile appearances in feature film.
In the pilot, Greer will play Jane – an overworked and perennially undervalued Head of Human Resources, who works for a plastic molding plant in New Jersey. When an outlandish, driven new CEO arrives, Jane must contend with plans for fundamental changes in the direction of the company, and all who work within it – all of which makes her job considerably more hellish than it was in the first place.
