Conor McMahon is no stranger here in Sitges. The Irish director already succeeded in winning the audience's affection back in 2012 with Stitches, a film that managed to get as much laughter as jumps and scares. This time he comes back to Sitges with From The Dark, a film that features a more classical and straightforward approach to the horror genre but still manages to offer some fresh ideas of his own. Sarah (Niamh Algar) and Mark (Stephen Cromwell) are a couple traveling through a remote rural area in Ireland on their way to a wedding, but somewhere along the way they take a wrong turn that leaves them completely lost. Mark decides to go searching for help, but it seems the only sign of civilization around is a nearby farm. But what they don't know is that...

Director/writer: Conor McMahon. Cast: Niamh Algar and Stephen Cromwell. From the Dark is a horror film from Conor McMahon (Stitches). Set in the Irish countryside, this film brings a nosferatu-like creature out of the bog and a couple is terrorized throughout much of the film. Though, this viewer felt considerably less fright. Still, the film is well shot and the use of minimal lighting helped amplify some tension. From the Dark is an intimate affair. It is also a minimalist one, in that there are few characters and few settings. Also, the pacing is very slow and action scenes are repetitive. In the end, From the Dark recycles too many action scenes and the film plays out too simply. The film begins with Sarah (Niamh Algar) and Mark (Stephen Cromwell). They are a couple on holiday, in the Irish countryside. They take a wrong turn, down a winding road.

From The Dark is the latest feature film from Stitches writer/director Conor McMahon. Where his Irish horror comedy, starring Ross Noble, played for bloody, gross out laughs and utilised an extensive cast to tell its tale, From The Dark is a vampire movie about a couple trapped on a remote peat farm.
However, this inaugural viewing by Nerdly is not under normal press screening conditions. Your reviewer is in Brussels, Belgium for his first ever Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff) experience. Before the film the queue snaking its way around the whole of the basement of the Brussels Centre For Fine Arts created a real sense of excitement and anticipation. For this newbie it was no indication of what was to follow once we sat down and waited for the lights to go down.

Tagline: "Pray for Dawn." Dark Sky Films is getting set to release the darkness. From the Dark, from Irish director Conor McMahon (Stitches), follows a couple trapped in the dark. They must use light to stay away from a loathsome creature. Focusing more on horror, than comedy, this true horror feature will release April 14th, 2015, on multiple platforms. The film begins with Sarah (Niamh Algar) and Mark (Stephen Cromwell). Together, they are on holiday in the Irish countryside. Their car gives out. Then, they become lost and disoriented. Mark is injured and a creature lurks in the darkness. How will they survive the night? A trailer has not been released for the film. However, the film's official movie poster is hosted here. The graphic shows one character with a lantern; a monster looms below. Blood reds haunt the sky, with the tagline stating: "Pray for Dawn." Dawn might not be coming for this couple.

While From The Dark is most certainly an “economical” creature feature, this backcountry survival story is a generic horror watch to the core. Creator Conor McMahon is the mad genius behind one of my favorite recent horror films, the pun-tastic slasher romp Stitches, but his abandonment of jovial comedy does nothing for this straight-laced vacation-gone-wrong scenario. With the purest of intentions, but a noticeably restricting production value, McMahon is backed into a corner while bringing to life an idea that’s otherwise fresh and welcoming. Utilizing two actors, one monster and a ton of night-vision, From The Dark is able to muster little more than a shiver, pacing through the same dangerous scenarios so many films have captured in a more invigorating light.

Coming from Conor McMahon, director of cult horror movie Stitches, From The Dark, filmed on location in Co. Laois, has finished principal photography. Starring Irish talent Niamh Algar (Savage Eye), Stephen Cromwell (Love/Hate), and Gerry O'Brien (Reign of Fire), From The Dark tells the story of a young couple who encounter an ancient evil on a road trip through the Irish countryside. No word whether this will follow the humorous road taken by Stitches, but judging by the creepy first image from the movie above, featuring Algar trapped in an underground tunnel, I have a feeling McMahon might be tackling straight horror this time round. No release date has been given for From The Dark as of yet.
