Disney's upcoming pulp sci-fi animated film "Strange World" is only two months away from release. In the film, a family of explorers heads out into a strange new territory, where odd creatures and plants wait to be discovered. /Film's own Vanessa Armstrong had a chat with "Strange World" Heads of Animation Amy Smeed and Justin Sklar about the creation of characters and how the team came up with their looks.
According to Sklar, the creation of the Clade family and the film's style was a group effort, with everyone "approaching it from a different direction." He said:
"I think [director Don Hall and co-director and writer Qui Nguyen] had a very specific vision about how we're going to approach the pulp thing and that became something for Jin Kim, who was drawing the characters, because it became this kind of French comic thing — there's a little bit of Miyazaki in there...

Walt Disney Animation Studios's 61st animated feature, "Strange World," is posed to bring a breath of fresh air to the nearly 100-year-old studio. The film feels unlike what the studio has been producing in recent years, a straight sci-fi adventure influenced by pulpy sci-fi novels by the likes of Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs. It feels in many ways like a second attempt at an "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" or "Treasure Planet" movie, which once offered a bright and different path for the studio.
"Strange World" comes to us from Oscar-winning director Don Hall, who previously helmed the last 2D Disney film, "Winnie the Pooh," and the studio's first fantasy adventure in decades, "Raya and the Last Dragon." The film boasts a great cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, and Lucy Liu. "Strange World" follows the Clades, a Swiss Family Robinson-like family of explorers on...

Who doesn’t love a good adventure? Frankly, after a couple of unusual years, being in a room with other journalists in-person and such at the same time feels like one. Yet something was happening at Disney Animation in Burbank, and I was thrilled to be a part of it. In the upcoming animated feature film Strange World (which just released a brand-new trailer), Disney hopes to create another magical adventure for all ages. And with an impressive cast, and Don Hall and his co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer on Raya and the Last Dragon), they had something to celebrate. Thus, I recently had the opportunity to check out footage from the upcoming film. And it was a treat.
Before we jumped into the presentation, we were given a brief synopsis from Mr. Hall, Mr. Nguyen, and producer Roy Conli. The story revolves around a family of explorers. They include...

There's something romantic about the idea of new stories springing from the minds of creative talent, fully-formed and containing nothing but original storytelling ready to blow the minds of unsuspecting audiences. Historically speaking, Walt Disney Animation Studios has projected the very image of consistency and success, going so far as to turn various animated classics -- most (if not all) of which are based on much older fables -- into the definitive stories in the minds of the general public. But the reality oftentimes is a much different story.
This is precisely what makes "Strange World" so intriguing: filtering various influences through a unique vision and making something new in the process. As director Don Hall has previously admitted, the upcoming film was chiefly inspired by old-fashioned pulp magazines and has resulted in a distinctive production that, as we heard about during this year's D23 Expo, fully embraces its pulpy roots.

The upcoming Disney animated film "Strange World" lives up to its title. The world that the Clade family visits is, indeed, strange. And the creatures that inhabit that world are, if it's possible, even stranger.
Even though there's a lot of weirdness in the film, all of those odd creations are still relatable and, dare I say, even adorable at times. During a press event at Disney Animation Studios last week, I had the chance to sit down with "Strange World" Heads of Animation Amy Smeed and Justin Sklar to talk about their work on the film. We chatted about their approach to creating creatures unlike anything we've seen before, but also how they approached crafting the plain ol' human characters in a way that fit with the rest of the film.
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Moana is the story of a young Polynesian heir ineffably drawn to the one thing that her community opposes: venturing out into the ocean, like the little mermaid was so drawn to land, like a monster to Boo, and like an ambitious rat was to the culinary arts.
Moana Head of Animation Hyrum Osmand (Zootopia, Frozen, Wreck It Ralph, Tangled) and Story Artist David Derrick Jr. (How To Train Your Dragon, Flushed Away, Bee Movie) talked with the press in a roundtable before speaking to the visual arts students at the University of Denver. Tucked away in a corner of the university, David tapped into what made Moana so personal to him, allowing him to segue easily into the film’s themes of Polynesian ancestry and culture while Hyrum explored the unique challenges this particular film offered Disney’s elite animators.
