Lionsgate has removed Janelle Monáe’s upcoming horror movie “Antebellum” from the release calendar, according to an individual with knowledge of the project. The film was originally set to be released theatrically on Aug. 21.
The film’s release is currently unset. The move is not surprising given the fact that California’s movie theaters, bars, indoor restaurants, wineries and museums are currently closed due to the “alarming” spread of Covid-19.
In “Antebellum,” Monáe plays a renowned author giving a lecture about why women are the future. But she finds out her time might be up when fate chooses her to confront the reality of America’s haunting past. Split between modern times and the Civil War-era slavery period in the South, Monáe finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late. Lionsgate’s horror film “Antebellum” — starring Janelle Monae — will release in theaters in North America on Aug. 21.
The move is a vote of confidence that moviegoing in the U.S. will be back in full swing by the late summer. “Antebellum” had originally been set to debut on April 24, but was pulled in mid-March amid concerns about the pandemic. In the wake of the global health crisis, the studio also previously postponed Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson’s “Saw” reboot and Sarah Paulson’s “Run.”
Monae portrays a modern-day author transported back into the 19th century as a slave in the Southern United States to come face-to-face with her ancestors. The trailer’s tagline asks: “What if fate chose you to save us from our past?”

In Janelle Monáe’s latest film, a horror movie called “Antebellum,” the horror she’s living stems all the way back to the slave period in American history.
The first teaser for “Antebellum” begins with a black woman running through a field and screaming in agony while in the distance some men in confederate uniforms chase her down on horses. But all the while, the only sounds we hear are the modern day noises of a plane flying overhead and a 911 operator desperately trying to help whomever is on the other side of the line.
The film specifically stars Monáe as successful author Veronica Henley, finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late. There’s also a creepy little girl in Civil War-era clothing who probably has something to do with whatever nightmare Monáe’s character is living through.
