During the past year, the virtual jam — wherein a group of artists each claim their own corner of a 16:9 YouTube screen to rock out in isolation, together — has become as ubiquitous as Zoom conference calls, online schooling, and any other pandemic-era activity. Pearl Jam did it for Covid relief. The Rolling Stones did it for Global Citizen. Metallica did it very quietly. But few virtual jams have been as relentlessly creative and consistently surprising — not to mention flat-out awesome — as the ones featured in metal-themed talk show Two Minutes...

The first time you hear Treats is a shock to the system. From that initial pow-pow airhorn on “Tell ‘Em,” the 2010 debut from indie duo Sleigh Bells is a cause for concern — so abrasive in its mix of heavy-metal guitars, trap hi-hats, punk sneer, and pop enthusiasm that, even at a reasonable volume, it sounds like it’s holding a knife to your speakers. Writer-producer-instrumentalist Derek Miller brings the explosive riffs and chant-like lyrics; vocalist Alexis Krauss brings the cadence and attitude of a SoulCycle coach cheerfully marching you toward hell.

Sleigh Bells have released their rendition of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” the haunting folk song made famous by blues musician Lead Belly in the Forties. Their cover is featured in the trailer for the upcoming film The Rhythm Section, directed by Reed Morano and starring Blake Lively and Jude Law.
The song, also known as “In the Pines” or “My Girl,” has been covered by numerous rock artists over the years, most famously by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged session in 1993. Sleigh Bells bring their noise-rock maximalist approach to the track,...

Third Eye Blind just completed a successful summer run, bringing their platinum rock hits (“Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s It Going to Be”) to outdoor spaces across the country alongside Jimmy Eat World. This tour felt different for the band members, because they originally thought they would have finished their first album in four years before embarking on the dates. “We didn’t think we could sustain a tour without new music,” said Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins at one recent tour stop. “And yet our people have just really shown up.

Alexis Krauss and Derek Edward Miller, better known as Sleigh Bells, have done something fascinating on their latest release Bitter Rivals.
They’ve actually ascertained how to marry slick pop pageantry to the confrontational wallop of 1980s thrash metal without appearing desperate to pacify both sides of the aisle. Instead of allowing one style to topple the other, they put their heads together, and let sparks fly with reckless abandon.
The title track jumpstarts things with Krauss spewing lyrics through a flamethrower as she wastes little time letting the listener in on what the band is all about in 2013. It’s an abrasive beginning to what builds itself up as a ride you won’t soon forget.
Sugarcane is an appropriately named slice of heaven that leans on a spirited riff from Miller as well as elements of Edm that mirror the noise eruption prominent on Kanye West’s Yeezus from earlier this year.

In Derek Miller’s apartment in Williamsburg, there is a poster on the refrigerator door of Larry Bird, the Boston Celtics legend. Bird’s mouth is agape, his right arm fully extended, his body nearly horizontal as he lunges for a basketball that is just beyond the reach of his fingertips. Across the top of the poster is a quotation from Bird: “It makes me sick when I see a guy just watching it go out of bounds.”On a bright fall afternoon, Miller, the guitarist and producer of the indie-pop duo Sleigh Bells, is lounging on his sofa with his bandmate, singer Alexis Krauss. The Bird poster isn’t the only thing that gives the apartment a man-cave feel. Miller is pecking at his MacBook, whose desktop wallpaper is a photo of Michael Jordan. There is a pair of boxing gloves in a corner against a wall. The U.

If so, then the first, surprisingly mellow 30 seconds of this new Sleigh Bells song are for you! Then you'll want to close tab, because: Yeah, we're jumping right into the loud shit. Sleigh Bells' new album, Bitter Rivals, is out October 8; in the meantime, Alexis Krauss has a new bodega-boxing workout for you.

Oh my gosh, there are so many comics. I took a month off visiting the comic shop on a weekly basis due to time constraints and the desire to have a little bit more money in my account prior to the end of the month. But then I got a fat stack of comics that had been sat behind the counter waiting for me. Then I got more the following week before I’d even had time to read all the ones the previous. Because there are so… many… comics. Even now, there’ll be more comics tomorrow. It’s a never ending spiral of stuff happening before some guy in a flat in South East London can write about it. Here’s my round up of the last month or so…
So Morning Glories (#29, Nick Spencer, Joe Eisma, Image Comics) is still happening, is still good and I’m still buying it.

While Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring has a lot of things going for it - a zeitgeist-tapping true crime story, an against-type Emma Watson performance, a killer Sleigh Bells soundtrack - a cast of likeable characters is not one of them.
But while some critics have enjoyed watching this cast of spoiled, amoral teenagers more than others, there's a long and proud tradition of movie characters who are both terrible people and wildly entertaining to watch.
