"Were you painting something?" Another chance to talk about one of my favorite films! Don't mind if I do. Studiocanal UK has released another 60-second official trailer for The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, directed by Will Sharpe, with Benedict Cumberbatch as British artist Louis Wain. "From Ancient Egypt to TikTok, cats have accompanied humans on life’s journey. But who made the creatures cute? Louis Wain tells the story of the Victorian-era artist whose widely published [artwork of] cats transformed them from mysterious to irresistible. In a dazzling, career-best performance, Cumberbatch plays one of Britain's most influential eccentrics as a flurry of wild ideas and prodigious artistic output." The cast also includes Claire Foy as his wife Emily, Sophia Di Martino, Olivia Colman narrating, Andrea Riseborough, Jamie Demetriou, Toby Jones, and Stacy Martin, plus a number of fun cameos (a few of which are spoiled in this trailer). I adore this film!

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is about much more than a man who drew remarkable portraits of cats. According to the movie’s star, Benedict Cumberbatch, the Amazon Studios project is about an artist in Victorian London who pursues many subjects with passion: boxing, painting, composing an opera and theorizing about the mechanical workings of the world, including the mysteries of electricity.
“He felt this thing all his life about electricity,” Cumberbatch said on the panel for the movie at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event Sunday. But “the real electricity is love,” continued the actor. “That’s the flow, that’s the course that runs through his entire life. And, of course, it’s all from Emily.”
Emily is the love of Wain’s life, played by Emmy winner Claire Foy. When first they meet in the film, she...

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on a curious nickname in the trailer for his latest film: the “Cat Man.” And there are a lot of kitties to go around in this first look at “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.”
Will Sharpe’s tongue-in-cheek biographical film tells the story of British artist Louis Wain, who rose to fame for his countless paintings of cats that were as colorful and cloyingly cutesy as you might expect. His work hasn’t exactly stood the test of time, but the film explores how Wain was a troubled soul with a fascination for the mysteries of the world. And over time, you could say he even became something of an “expert” when it came to cats.
“They will turn blue and communicate with us in our own language,” Cumberbatch says in the trailer. “Did you say that they would turn blue… wow,” a character played by Claire Foy responds.

Okay, we know. Last Friday was the thirteenth, the day that the studio generally releases a spooky flick to chill the bones (and get butts in the seats). And the thriller sequel Don’T Breathe 2 was unleashed. But that doesn’t mean that the following Friday can’t get one too. And what better place to encounter some “unfriendly spirits” than a creeky ole’ haunted mansion. That’s the reasoning behind the new fright flick, except…This spectral showcase is nearly brand new. Still, there are lots of strange stuff happening when the sun goes down at The Night House.
As the story starts, we’re viewing shaky home videos and wedding photos of the happy couple who occupied the newly built home tucked away in the woods on the banks of a tranquil lake.

“Don’t go into the woods,” altogether too many characters have been warned through the annals of spooky literature and cinema, only to do so anyway, but Rebecca Hall has no choice because she already lives there in The Night House. Director David Bruckner clearly relishes the tropes of the horror genre and everything that comes with them. Honestly, though, we’ve been down this dark and woodsy path so many times that, no matter how many scares and shock cuts can be squeezed out of this crafty little thriller, this is a tree that’s long since been shorn of most of its leaves.

Sony Pictures Classics’ sci-fi drama Nine Days starring Winston Duke opens in four theaters in a specialty market buoyed by recent releases like Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain and Pig. New York’s arthouse scene, outpaced by LA of late, is perking up, distributors say (Ailey numbers were super there) and moviegoers are rewarding unique films and strong stories.
(The slow reviving specialty scene is keeping its head down as day-and-date tensions in wide release blockbuster-land explode.)
Nine Days hits NYC and LA today before rolling out nationwide August 6 in 250-275 theaters, said Jason Michael Berman, a producer, and president of Mandalay Pictures — of course depending on how it does. He’s upbeat after 800 people turned out for LA screening this week at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel with EP Spike Jonze introducing the film, written and directed by Edson Oda,...

"All houses where men have lived and died are haunted houses..." Searchlight Pictures has just unveiled a second official trailer for The Night House, a mysterious haunted house horror thriller from filmmaker David Bruckner. This new trailer is only 60 seconds compared to the full 2-1/2 minutes trailer from a few months ago. The film originally premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival and was delayed until the end of this summer. A widow attempts to uncover her recently deceased husband's disturbing secrets in their lakeside home. There seems to be much more going on in here with duality and an eerie mirror home / alternate world where things aren't quite the same. The horror film stars Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, and Stacy Martin. The creepy voiceover in this is very cool, and quite chilling. The more they show from this film, the more I really want to watch it.
