“Midsommar” producer Patrik Andersson from B-Reel Films and Jakob Abrahamsson, a distribution veteran from NonStop Entertainment, have joined forces to launch Mylla Films, a Scandinavian genre film and TV production company.
Aiming to nurture local talent and stories, folklore and myths for an international audience, the banner is bowing at Cannes with a strong slate comprising of “Devastation,” Sweden’s first gothic Western, and “Hoin,” a conspiracy thriller based on a hit Swedish podcast and penned by Jerker Virdborg (Netflix’s “Black Crab”).

“Hoin,” meanwhile, is a thriller based on Andreas Ericson’s popular podcast of the same name. Virdborg penned the movie, which Andersson described as “‘Chinatown’ meets ‘The Ring.'” The story follows a journalist who travels to the barren archipelago of Stockholm,...

Few titles which will have been presented at this Friday’s MipDrama look as ingenious in their invention as “Agatha Christie’s Hjerson.”
Anyone looking for a series of novels in the Poirot or Marple vein will look in vain. Sven Hjerson appears in multiple Christie works, but always via (often disparaging) comments made by his creator, fictional crime novelist Ariadne Oliver, a friend of Poirot’s whom Christie invented to let off steam about the travails of crime writing.
Despite being her most popular detective, Oliver would like to kill him off, she says. That’s because she’s made him a foreigner and receives letters from readers complaining about the inaccuracy of her descriptions of him: a fate suffered by Christie with Poirot.
Many decades later, Oliver must be rolling in her grave. Her master sleuth Sven Hjerson has now become the protagonist of an eight-part TV series...

Sven Hjerson, the debonair Scandinavian master detective invented by crime writer Ariadne Oliver, a character in Agatha Christie’s novels, will get his own series, set in modern-day Stockholm.
In “Agatha Christie’s Sven Hjerson,” Hanna Alström plays Klara Sandberg, a former trash TV producer who successfully pitches a true-life crime show starring Hjerson, who would solve a real crime each week. The new show may reset Sandberg’s career and life, but the only problem is that she has never met Hjerson.
The show stars Johan Rheborg (“Kenny Starfighter”) as Hjerson. It will be comprised of four murder cases and broadcast as four films and an eight-episode TV series in the fall of 2021.
“The series will offer mystery, drama, puzzles; it’s not a comedy but will have a sense of humor and be a world that’s quite nice just to be in,” said Josefine Tengblad, head of...

Horror film “Midsommar” did it last year. A new adaptation of the Swedish classic “The Emigrants” will do it next year. Prestigious productions that could have taken advantage of beautiful Swedish locations and craft expertise continue to run away to foreign locations for lower costs and tax incentives.
Despite having a strong film industry creatively – recent Swedish films include Roy Andersson’s Toronto Film Festival player “About Endlessness” and Sweden’s Oscar entry in the International Feature Film category, Levan Akin’s “And Then We Danced” – Sweden is among a forlorn group of just four countries in the European Union and the European Economic Area that still don’t have a national government-funded film and TV filming incentive.
Whereas Finland, Norway and Iceland, with their 25% incentives, are more sought after location destinations for foreign producers, Sweden and Denmark – the most prolific countries of Nordic cinema – are still waiting for their...

We have someone (actually two people, the Coen bros.) to preside over the famed Cannes Film Festival jury and now we have a poster. Next? The movies themselves. The Festival du Cannes revealed the poster for the 68th edition of the famed international film festival today and this year's edition puts the spotlight on Ingrid Berman. The acclaimed Swedish actress presided over the Cannes Jury in 1973. Hervé Chigioni and Gilles Frappier designed this year's poster which always sets the stage for the upcoming festival. Besides the poster, the festival also released an animated video inspired by the new image featuring the music that plays before every Cannes screening, "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns. This version was arranged by two Swedish musicians, Patrik Andersson and Andreas Söderström. You can watch the new video below the embedded poster image in this post.
