Aneesh Chaganty, Will Merrick, and Nick Johnson have spent the last few years slowly building an anthology of films that deal with missing people and the growing sophistication of technology in our lives. They arrived on the scene with Searching in 2018, told entirely through computer screens. Then came Run in 2020, and now, after a Covid-19 delay, Missing. Chaganty directed the first two with Merrick and Johnson as editors; but now the editors have become screenwriters and make their directorial debut with the new film.
They have intertwined the characters from the three films so you actually get some closure for Run with dialogue in Missing.
The new film swaps the father seeking his daughter from the first film as this time, teenager June (Storm Reid) uses her laptop and computer skills to track the whereabouts of her mother, Grace (Nia Long), who has disappeared in Colombia with her new boyfriend...

To mark the film’s release, we had the pleasure in speaking to its leading star Storm Reid, as she talks about the distinctive and unusual way of shooting the film, and the challenges that come with it. Also, just to make us feel old, we wanted to find out if the rumours were true: are young people really not using WhatsApp?
We also had the pleasure in speaking to the brains behind the project, interview both Natalie Qasabian and Will Merrick, as they talk about some of the easter eggs for fans to pick up on. You can watch both interviews in their entirety below.

This post contains spoilers for "Missing."
"Missing," the sequel to 2018's Screenlife movie "Searching," is in theaters now, and while this follow-up is perhaps not quite as electrifying as the first movie since the format has become a bit more familiar to audiences, it's still a wildly entertaining and twisty thrill ride that keeps the audience guessing and expands the scope of this franchise in fascinating ways. The filmmaking team behind the first movie have all returned for "Missing," albeit in a shuffled capacity. On "Searching," Aneesh Chaganty served as co-writer and director; Sev Ohanian was a co-writer and producer; Natalie Qasabian was a producer, and Will Merrick and Nick Johnson served as editors and "directors of screen photography," having generated every digital asset in the movie from scratch.
For "Missing," Chaganty and Ohanian have "story by" credit, Ohanian and Qasabian returned as producers, and Merrick and Johnson wrote the...

The only new wide studio release this weekend is the Stage 6 and Screen Gems thriller Missing which collected 760K yesterday off of showtimes that began at 4Pm at 2,650 locations. The movie, which is from the creatives behind Sony’s micro-hit, Searching, is expected to do in the mid single digits off 3,000 theaters.
Similar to Searching, Missing was made off a very thrifty budget of 7M before P&a.
Missing is executive produced by Searching‘s Timur Bekmambetov, produced by Sev Ohanian and Natalie Qasabian, and storied by that previous title’s Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, the latter who helmed the first title. Missing is directed by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick. The pic follows a young woman who tries to find her missing mother using tools available to her online. Storm Reid and Nia Long star.

2018’s sleeper hit, Searching, showed you could create an effective edge-of-your-seat mystery thriller told exclusively through the use of the screens that dominate our daily lives in this century. It starred John Cho as a father whose 16-year-old daughter disappears, leading him to use all the tools of the internet to try and trace her steps in order to find her. Its follow-up, Missing, actually improves on that idea with a different story and set of characters, taking it several leaps further in creating a corker of a suspense picture that looks like what a filmmaking master such as Hitchcock might have made had he been an It genius too.
Watching Searching, which was directed and cowritten (with Sev Ohanian) by Aneesh Chaganty, I kept thinking how the real stars of the piece were the film editors who had to put together a puzzle of images in order to create a coherent story.

Aneesh Chaganty's "Searching," the John Cho-led thriller which played out entirely across screens and devices, was an inventive, edge-of-your-seat experience that ended up being one of the best films of 2018. A father's search for his missing daughter was the driving force behind the film's plot, but eagle-eyed viewers quickly noticed an entirely different story playing out in the corners of the frame: an alien invasion. The film's main characters never personally engage with this storyline (they're a little preoccupied), but if you look closely, you'll see news articles, YouTube videos, and Facebook trending topics about green atmospheric anomalies appearing in the sky, culminating with NASA calling a meeting at the White House to address the invasion.
This week, the sequel to "Searching," titled "Missing," hits theaters. The film focuses on a young girl named June (Storm Reid) whose mother (Nia Long) goes missing, and the story is larger...

Just last week, Sony announced that they would be giving the “Searching sequel” Missing a theatrical release on January 20, 2023 – and now they have unveiled the trailer for the film! You can check it out in the embed above.
Made on a budget of less than 1 million, the mystery thriller Searching (read our review Here), which played out entirely on computer and smartphone screens, earned over 75 million at the global box office when it was released back in 2018. So the creative team behind that film have gotten back together to bring us the mystery thriller Missing, which will be presented in the same way as Searching was.
Details on the plot of Missing have been kept under wraps up to this point, but now we have a synopsis:
When her mother disappears while on vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend, June’s search for answers is hindered by international red tape.

Made on a budget of less than 1 million, the mystery thriller Searching (read our review Here), which played out entirely on computer and smartphone screens, earned over 75 million at the global box office. So it’s no wonder a sequel was given the greenlight… but since this was going to be a sequel in name only, it’s also not very surprising that it received a title change along the way. The “Searching sequel” is called Missing, and it was set to reach theatres on February 24, 2023. Deadline reports that it has now been moved forward to the new release date of January 20, 2023.
Details on the plot of Missing are being kept under wraps. We do know the film stars Storm Reid (The Invisible Man) and Nia Long (NCIS: Los Angeles).

The narrative feature “Coda” and the documentary “Summer of Soul” swept the top categories at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prizes and also taking the audience awards in the U.S. dramatic and documentary competitions.
“Coda,” director Sian Heder’s coming-of-age story in which Emilia Jones plays the only hearing member of a deaf family, also won an award for its ensemble, many of them deaf actors who performed in ASL. Its wins come three days after the film set a record for the largest sale in Sundance history, a $25 million deal with Apple.
“Summer of Soul,” which like “Coda” screened on the festival’s opening night, is a documentary by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson built around long-unseen concert footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a six-weekend event that first-time director Questlove uses as a launching pad to explore race relations and Black culture in that tumultuous time.

“Searching” director Aneesh Chaganty’s new thriller “Run” debuted November 20 on Hulu, introducing moviegoers to breakout actress Kiera Allen. As the streaming giant advertised ahead of the film’s debut, Allen’s starring role makes “Run” the first feature film from an American studio to star a disabled leading actress in over 70 years. The search for Allen’s role of Chloe was “an intense and countrywide” endeavor, Chaganty recently told MovieMaker. Casting a disabled actress as a disabled character was a given for the director and his collaborators, writer Sev Ohanian and producer Natalie Qasabian.
“It was never a controversial topic between the three of us,” Chaganty said. “It was sort of like, ‘Yeah, we’re doing this right?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Cool.’ And then the process of actually finding this person proved to be an intense and countrywide sort of search. And we ended up finding this incredible talent in Kiera Allen.

The producers of the Sarah Paulson thriller “Run” said that prior to casting disabled actress Kiera Allen in the lead role, they saw several actresses in auditions who claimed they used a wheelchair but were actually able-bodied.
“Run” producers Sev Ohanian and Natalie Qasabian along with director Aneesh Chaganty spoke in an interview with MovieMaker and said that, from the beginning, they were committed to casting a disabled actress. But in searching online, they came across several people who lied about using wheelchairs in their real lives.
“There were a couple of young ladies we saw that submitted themselves as people with disabilities. And we were like, wow, they’re really talented… but somebody looked them up on Instagram,” Ohanian said. “There were videos of them walking on the beach from like, two hours ago.”

Hulu has set a release date for Aneesh Chaganty’s (Searching) Run starring Emmy winner Sarah Paulson and newcomer Kiera Allen. The thriller is set to drop on the streamer November 20.
Run was the latest film from Lionsgate to forego a theatrical release and head to digital. The horror Antebellum also skipped the big screen stateside dropped on PVOD. Hulu acquired domestic rights to Run from Lionsgate in what was reported to be a competitive situation. However, Run, like Antebellum is expected to be released theatrically overseas. The movie was originally set to have a May 8 (which was appropriate considering it was Mother’s Day) theatrical release but due to a little global pandemic, it, like other films pivoted to other release strategies due to the shut down the big theater chains in mid-March.

Lionsgate has sold domestic rights to Sarah Paulson’s “Run” to streaming service Hulu, making the thriller the latest in a long line of titles to ditch its planned theatrical release amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Run” is directed by Aneesh Chaganty. Natalie Qasabian and Sev Ohanian are producing from a script by Chaganty and Ohanian. Paulson portrays the mother of a teenage girl — played by newcomer Kiera Allen — who has been raised in total isolation. The girl’s life begins to unravel as she discovers her mother’s sinister secret.
“Run” will be released theatrically in select international markets. “Run” is the second feature from the filmmaking team behind “Searching,” which starred John Cho as a father searching for his missing daughter. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to earn more than $75 million worldwide.
Hulu handled the release of Andy Samberg’s romantic comedy “Palm Springs” — its most-watched movie premiere.

Hulu has acquired the domestic rights to “Run,” a thriller from “Searching” director Aneesh Chaganty and starring Sarah Paulson, from Lionsgate after it was pulled from the theatrical release slate earlier this year.
“Run” was meant to open on May 8 but was pulled from the schedule. Hulu has not set a new release date as of yet. The film will still be released theatrically in select international markets.
Kiera Allen stars in “Run,” a rare thriller to feature a person who uses a wheelchair in the lead role. She performs alongside Paulson, a controlling mother who has an unnatural, even sinister relationship with her daughter that as a teenager she’s only beginning to grasp.

Sony made a tidy profit on the first film, so Searching 2 is on the way!
Sony is on the lookout for a new franchise with legs, and Searching might very well be it. 2018's John Cho-starring laptop thriller only cost about $880,000 to make, and raked in $75 million globally, so why not, eh? It also had really positive reviews for the most part, which never hurts a smaller scale film festival acquisition - Searching was originally picked up at Sundance for just $5 million.
Deadline confirms that Sony’s Stage 6 Films is now developing a Searching sequel with a brand new plot and cast, but one that will almost certainly bring back the original creative team of Timur Bekmambetov, Sev Ohanian, Adam Sidman, and Natalie Qasabian for a potential feature anthology series.

Exclusive: You don’t see that many films acquired at Sundance getting sequels, but Sony’s Stage 6 Films is working on a second installment of Searching, the thriller about a father’s desperate search for his missing daughter that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions bought for $5 million in a world rights deal and watched become a breakout hit that grossed $75 million worldwide. It was released by Sony’s Stage 6 Films and Screen Gems.
Directed by Aneesh Chaganty and starring John Cho and Debra Messing, the original cleverly turned the computer screen into a cinematic canvas as a father accustomed to parenting through iMessages and quick FaceTime chats, realizes his daughter has gone missing and uses the laptop she left behind to locate clues to find her before it is too late.

Lodged between the meat market of the Sundance Film Festival every January and the prestige of the Cannes Film Festival every May, the Tribeca Film Festival is an odd duck. Each and every April for the last 16 years, Tribeca has showcased a wife variety of (mostly) independent movies, many of which struggle to see the light of day. Still, there’s always a gem or two in the lineup, and even the occasional Academy Award nominee. With screenings for press beginning before this month is out, now is a solid time to take a look at some of what Tribeca has to offer for 2018. First up, it’s worth noting some of the prior Tribeca titles that have struck my fancy. Last year, it was the grouping of Blame, The Boy Downstairs, and especially Flower that highlighted a rather week lineup. The year before, 2016 featured Between Us, Dean, Don’t Think Twice,...
