Austin, TX – The SXSW Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 19th, after 10 days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Raging Grace” as the top Narrative Feature and “Grown” as top TV Pilot.
“Raging Grace” was written and directed by Paris Zarcilla, telling the story of a Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter, with the jury noting its “heady blend of horror, history, and midnight humor announcing the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.” The TV Pilot “Grown” focuses on a teenage boy attempting to move forward after losing his father, and the jury said it was “a coming-of-age story told with heart and visually realized with polish and verve.”
The following is the list of top honorees …

A slow-motion panic attack in movie form, “The Young Wife” swirls around the hopes and doubts of a young woman (a radiant Kiersey Clemons) on the day of her “non-wedding.” It’s not a moment of matrimony, nor is it quite a commitment ceremony, but instead a day-long party, a celebration of the love between Celestina and her wishy-washy boyfriend River (Leon Bridges), who’s hours late. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, “The Young Wife” is , and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.

The 75th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday night, wrapping up the final weekend of guild awards before the Oscars next week. Both screenplay categories are tight at the Oscars, but not all the contenders were present at WGA.
That’s because the guild’s strict rules disqualify a number of scripts every year. In filmmaker Andrew Balasia’s comedy drama Souvenirs a friend-for-hire balances his time with his peculiar clientele as he prepares for his most challenging assignment to date, becoming a father. Balasia tells his story across a series of scenes in which his protagonist plays out the different roles required of him with clients, who vary in their degrees of being wonderfully weird. During these scenes, Balasia is able to narratively break down the fundamentals of human interactions whilst stylistically managing to highlight each encounter through a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere comprised of a vivid colour palette and serene cinematography. Dn had the pleasure of speaking with Balasia about his desire to explore the basis of human interactions, the real-world story his film is based on, and the technical production behind his almost-psychedelic aesthetic.

The suburban enclave of Lemoncurd — “a charming town full of charming people leading charming lives and eating charming food” — is surely home to many delightful residents, but only three of them really matter: a trio of Debras who, as the title of the bite-sized Adult Swim series tells us, are very busy indeed. Busy with what, you may ask? Only upending the social order, taking aim at the patriarchy, and engaging in all manner of crimes along the way (in pristine white outfits to boot).
Created by and starring the eponymous Debras — Mitra Jouhari (“High Maintenance”), Sandy Honig (“Isn’t It Romantic”) and Alyssa Stonoha (“Rules of Cool”) — the series is a canny fit for Adult Swim, which has long trafficked in off-kilter programming populated by fresh faces. Shortly after announcing it would revive the legendary “National Lampoon Radio Hour,” alternative comedy podcaster Forever Dog is unveiling an eclectic slate of new launches, including a scripted show from Charles Rogers and Sarah Violet-Bliss, creators of TBS’ critical hit “Search Party.” Billed as an “irreverent send-up of the entertainment industry,” “Conference Call” follows a group of inept Hollywood talent managers through a series of chaotic company-wide conference calls.

After a month and a half, Viceland is pulling the plug on “Vice Live,” its weeknight live show, due to low ratings.
“Vice Live” aired Monday through Thursday from Vice’s Brooklyn headquarters, originally launching as a two-hour nightly showcase of all things Vice. Viceland later cut the show to one hour a night, but “Vice Live” never managed to catch on in pop culture. The show premiered on Feb. 25 to just 77,000 viewers, making it one of cable’s least-watched shows in primetime.
The final episode of “Vice Live” aired last Thursday. Viceland president Guy Slattery announced the cancellation to staffers on Monday. A spokesperson referred Variety to an internal memo sent by Slattery.

Viceland is going live in primetime next month with Vice Live, a two-hour variety special that will air four nights a week, Monday through Thursday, starting Monday, February 25 at 9 Pm.
Vice Live will broadcast live out of Vice’s Brooklyn headquarters, covering the day’s hottest topics and trends, led by rising comedian/actress Marie Faustin, writer/comedian/internet provocateur Zack Fox, comedian/director/photographer Sandy Honig, and rapper/host Fat Tony.
The show itself will continually be experimenting and evolving in real-time, according to Viceland. Any given episode could feature comedy pieces, celebrity visits, short-form videos, and field pieces and check-in’s from Vice’s outposts across the globe. Social media also will be a key part of Vice Live as viewers interact with the show in real-time.
Vice Live fills the void left by Desus & Mero, which formerly aired nightly on Viceland, following the hosts’ move to Showtime.
