Martin Freeman defends his new film, Miller’s Girl, from the criticism it has received for the age gap between him and his co-star, Jenna Ortega.
The erotic thriller, written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, depicts an affair between a student and a teacher. In real life, Freeman is 52 years old, while the Wednesday star is 21.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the Office UK alum said the film is “grown-up and nuanced,” adding that the film is not saying, “Isn’t this great.”
“And that’s a shame,” Freeman noted, about the stories about difficult subjects that can be tainted by association before referencing Schindler’s List, saying, “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?”

The fact that Jenna Ortega won’t be in Scream 7 was a shocking announcement last month (apparently her absence from the sequel is due to a pay dispute), but there are still going to be plenty of chances to see her on our screens regularly. She’s set to start filming Wednesday season 2 in a few months, she’s in the crime thriller Finestkind (which just started streaming on Paramount+ last Friday), and on January 26th she’ll be back on the big screen when Lionsgate gives the psychological thriller Miller’s Girl a theatrical release. With that release date just one month away, a trailer for Miller’s Girl has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Jenna Ortega is trying on playing a seductress for size. The “Beetlejuice 2” and “Wednesday” star leads psychological thriller “Miller’s Girl” in what appears to be a ’90s-esque tale of twisted teen power dynamics set against the backdrop of an elite university.
Martin Freeman stars as the titular Mr. Miller, a teacher who becomes entangled with talented student Cairo (Ortega), who has an agenda all her own. As 18-year-old Cairo taunts Mr. Miller into a game of truth or dare, a more sinister scheme of blackmailing ensues.
The official synopsis reads: “A talented young writer (Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.”

Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman find themselves embroiled in a heated student-teacher dynamic in the trailer for the upcoming feature Miller’s Girl.
Lionsgate is set to release the film from writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett on Jan. 26 after it debuts at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier that month. Ortega stars as Cairo, a promising writer who navigates her complicated relationship with Jonathan Miller (Freeman) after his assignment leads to tension.
“Why did you write this?” Freeman asks in the drama’s trailer. “This is inappropriate.” This leads Ortega to respond, “‘Write what you know,’ is what you said.”
Later, Freeman laments, “If she can convince them that something happened between us, I would lose my job.”
Bartlett directs from her own script, which landed on the Black List in 2016. Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin and Gideon Adlon co-star in the movie that counts Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen...

The NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, starring Renée Zellweger, concluded its run on Tuesday, April 13, but has clearly made its mark for the network as its top-rated new series of the 2021-2022 season.
The show centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria, which resulted in her husband Russ’s conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Pam Hupp (Zellweger).
The series premiered in March and its opening episode performed decently with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.79 million viewers. Since then, the episode jumped up to a 4.24 in the demo and tallied 14 million viewers – a 5x audience increase – across live, delayed and digital viewing, according to the network. The company also said that the pilot marked NBC’s best digital launch ever.
